When I was growing up in the Philippines, we used to have this Kali master in the neighborhood with his stick. As kids, we were so scared of him. And I'm telling u, nobody can't touch that man. Nobody, challenge him or mess with him.

Great striking drills for speed and power!!! I have a way to hang a tire where the mid-tire is head level and work these drills along with 6-count sinawali striking drills. Chasing the tire, which happens as you are striking the tire, adds to the drill and is good because your opponent(s) is not going to just stand there and let himself get hit, like Bob. The tire becomes a moving target as you will find and you will have to adjust your striking to compensate for movement and motion. This way, you only need one tire. I throw in some flip-hitting to top off the drills.

I practice those trills as a complement to my Armwrestling training. Having heavy arms and strong forearms I notice that I prefer to gravitate doing a combination of elbow and wrist striking . Another thing I noticed is that all four strike combos starts from outside and the second strike is a re-set back to outside. That way each type of striking only need a count of 3 (only count the start, not rhe re-set) simplifying the mental task load when you move faster.

So I get that the different schools and systems have different names for things, but when I hear people talk about "Arco" does that usually refer to the full shoulder, circular strike? And "witik" is the strike from the wrist? Is that how that usually goes?
@kalicenter
@kalicenter 10 ай бұрын
Just depends on the school. It’s more like how there are so many dialects in the Philippines. Witik usually means flick or to flick. But some schools use Witik to define a retracting strike like a Broken strike. It really comes down to how the school or system uses the terminology.

I'm very poor. Can't afford any proper gear. I have a couple thin but durable metal pipes that are about the right weight but maybe like two or three inches shorter. Been practicing with those. Sometimes you just gotta improvise. Thanks for the drill, friend. Kinda makes me think of some of the basic cuts in saber fencing. But there's also the bonus of not having to worry about edge alignment.
@kalicenter
@kalicenter 10 ай бұрын
The proper gear is whatever you can use. My first Escrima we didn’t use rattan. We cut down to size hickory oars and used that because it’s what was there. There wasn’t online shopping back then. 👍🏼

Look for young trees that have a diameter of 2cm or 1.5 cm. The length should be about 71-72cm. I usually cut these while hiking just to work with them while walking

My practice sticks were gray plastic/PVC conduit used for outside electrical work. Relatively cheap, reasonably durable, and a good amount of flex so they don't shatter with ease.

I have a question, so i use Cutlass Swords with a 25 inch blade. Would you recommend using the chambered position for a sword of that length when striking the angles 1 and 2?
@kalicenter
@kalicenter 10 ай бұрын
No. Different weaponry is different. I don’t full chamber when working with my saber and rapiers. This is Filipino Martial Arts. For my saber and rapier I don’t use Filipino Martial Arts. 👍🏼

@@kalicenter Interesting. I just recently started Experimenting using Kali with weapons like the Cutlass or Sabers. There are a lot of techniques that work with those two weapons, but to that same capacity there are some that don't.
@azizcook1651

@@kalicenter However, despite how fond I am of Cutlass swords I find myself sticking to the Gladius sword that i originally started using for Kali. It's shorter and more applicable to Kali.
