There is a very dramatic story to the 1984 entry of Mary Roos "Aufrecht gehen". Shortly before her performance she discovered that her husband at that time had cheated on her and than she had to sing this women empowering song. She revealed that story herself only a few months ago. The lyrics of the song must have been painful to sing that evening. www.vox.de/cms/sing-meinen-song-2018-diese-traurige-geschichte-steckt-hinter-mary-roos-esc-auftritt-zu-aufrecht-geh-n-4169602.html

4th for Dschingis Kahn is just unjust...after all this years this is one of the most remembered songs of Eurovision, and not just in Germany. Also I don't get how Texas Lighting didn't do better. The song is such a great Quickstep! And I think Eliza won that year because, let's be frank, the song of Unheilig just wasn't that great. It was generic and forgettable. And I was a big fan of Unheilig and looked forward to having them and Eurovision, but when I actually heard their song I immediately was rooting for whatever band did the Nordic style fisher song to win, because that was at least authentic. So I actually DO think that Eliza had the best song of the three by far, just not the right song for Eurovision. You need to listen to it a few times to truly fall in love with it, and you have only one shot to convince the audience during Eurovision.

Gitte was and is extremely famous in Germany and Austria. In the sixties ( "ich will nen Cowboy als Mann") she and Rex Gildo were seen as Germany's dream couple, nobody back than knew it was only a marketing strategy and Rex wasn't really interested in her, but that's another story. 2012 she appeared in Germany's successful show "Let's dance" and had to quit because sadly her mother died. Matt! You must be kidding! Gitte from Denmark, who sang "Junger Tag" in 1973 was a huge star in Germany in the 1960es, 70es and 80'es. She went to Germany and won the Schlagerfestspiele in 1964 with "Ich will nen Cowboy als Mann", when she was only 17 years old. Before she moved to Germany, she was an immensely popular child star in Denmark. She now lives in Berlin and is still performing.

These days I have increased respect for how well it scans in English how well it was translated especially since the next attempt for La Vie Est Cadeux if I with my limited French know it lost pretty much all of its meaning in the translation making it kinda shit. I think Nicole did perform the song in English for either the 60th anniversary concert.

I remember when people completely ripped this year's entry apart like "Another last place" and that stuff. I just said "Watch out, possibly a top 10, at least top 15" And guess who was right? The thing with German's though is that they are never satisfied. They'll always criticize everything and be all negative. That's one of the thing's I don't like about the German public. Always so negative.
@swanpride6 жыл бұрын
Well, I didn't expect it to reach top ten either, I was expecting it scoring somewhere in the middle. But, to be fair, that assessment was based on the assumption that he would perform only once and without knowing how the stage performance would look like. Performing twice and the presence of the song on the internet beforehand helped the song immensely, and what they came up with for the stage was pretty great. Basically, it wasn't that I didn't like the entry, it's that I put it into one category with Eliza, a song which is actually pretty great but you need to hear a few times to really connect with.

09:30 I’m sure somebodies probably pointed it out already but wrong year Matt, Johnny Logan won the previous year, 1980. Buck’s Fizz won in 1981. Germany really was a strong contender around the 80s and I never realised they’d had so many top 5 finishes. I’ve loved their winning song from 1982 since the first time I heard it. I always find it strange how especially in more recent years all the big 5 countries tend to sing partly or entirely in their own language but Germany always sings in English.

Such classics. I also remember as a kid "Ein bißchen Frieden" but in Polish version cover sung by Polish singer of Greek descent, Eleni. I never had a clue this is German song until I got seriously interested in Eurovision! If anyone is curious about Polish version >kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4qpYYhsbMSdb6c In more recent history: I will probably never get over 0 points for Black Smoke. I can risk a statement that it's my favortite German song in years from 2000 and beyond. 1962 Conny Froboess had her first hit at the age of eight! The ESC entry won the German Schlager Festival and was one month number one in the German Charts. She sang it also in a very popular Austrian movie, that was a big hit in the German speaking countries. She got no point from Italy. Later she saw herself primarily as an actress and refused to sing her old hits. Once she said, not that she wouldn't like to do it but she couldn't do it anymore, because her voice was much lower and she hadn't practiced singing anymore.

There is one more subject I'd like to mention. I got interested recently in German non-qualification in 1996 with Leon's "Blauer Planet". This song had part of lyrcis in English. I am surprised people don''t mention this at all - this is of course under assumption that national final version was send to EBU for this prequalification/semifinal round. I wonder how did it not get full disqualification in the first place? That's a bit of a shocker. Few words in English were allowed in 1997 (Austria, Norway, Bosnia used it), but not in 1996 as far as I know. It had blatantly in chorus "Planet of blue I love you", word "Countdown" repeated all over the song plus doing the actual countdown in English. Perhaps it wasn't juries dislike for Euro dance/techno but some point deduction occured because of rules. Perhaps some countries sticked to national language rule and gave him null point or placed him last. He came 24th so pretty much just missed the cut for the final. What would happen if he actually qualified. Protests from other countries? Germany forced to change lyrics?

Thank you for this video. How do you now feel about Germany's 2019 entry S!sters "Sister"? When I watched Germany's national final 2019 online from the UK, on Friday 22 February 2019, I ranked it third out of seven in My Eurovision Scoreboard. At the time, I thought it was one of the better songs that evening, but as other countries gradually announced their songs in the weeks that followed, this became one of my least liked ESC 2019 entries. Going by the Grand Final performance alone, I liked the way the ladies took turns to sing individually during the first verse, and how they sang together with good harmony during the choruses. The single and multiple images of the ladies' faces on the background screens added impact, as did the falling fireworks at the end. Nonetheless, I guessed this was destined for near bottom of the scoreboard in the ESC 2019 Grand Final.

Germany 1975 was definitely robbed and Gracia's song is inexplicable how people thought that this was last place stuff. Of course, Katia in 1980 should have sent JL back in Dublin crying like a little girl. On the other hand, Wind's 1987 song in 2nd place... WTH? Miss Kiss Kiss Bang came out so unexpectedly cheap. Last but not least the Dsinghis Khan song in Greece made a huge success, was performed in Greek and you can still sometimes listen to this tune on the radio even in our days. Still, it did get NOT a single point from the Greek jury that night which is explained by the grouse costumes and scary appearance plus the fact that we just needed the minimum excuse not to vote for the Germs. Germans HAVE TO REALIZE that the big 4 thing has destroyed them and the fact that they don't pass from the semi finals is just a reality that the European audience cannot do else but punish by ignoring the songs. People who vote at home do not care for whom has paid the most for the show.
