Cheston Eshelman was an American inventor, aviator, manufacturer of aircraft, boats, garden machinery and small automobiles
In 1941 Eshelman developed, built and repeatedly demonstrated a wingless pancake-shaped airplane, the NX28993
But first hit the headlines in 1939 when, as a 22 year-old airplane mechanic and novice pilot, his rented airplane crashed into the Atlantic. When rescued, he was reported to have been carrying a pistol, sandwiches, two chocolate bars and 55 cents. Eshelman made the papers by telling police that his intent was "not to fly to Europe, but rather to fly to Mars"... The officer handcuffed him to make sure he would “remain on this planet.”

Yes, it's been fun to make the video but it's also been heavily criticized by those who don't value the work of modeling something so strange and without 3 view drawings or more web information ,.. I'll do it again and try to get it to fly this time. Thank you Artorius...

@@julioaeroperu you're modeling skill is amazing. And if you get it to fly, I'd love if you could explain some of the design choices you made to get it there. Low AR aircraft are my passion and while I haven't yet had time or financial ability to begin building and experimenting with any of the ideas I have, these rare, unusual aircraft like the Flying Flounder are amazing. It seems like these aircraft always perform much better than the critics predict. Plus they look awesome.

Too bad it didn't quite make it to controlled flight. Good synch work with the engine sound, mostly that of a big V12 from WW2, not a little flat four with less than 100hp. Was fun to watch, I was heavily involved with RC for years, good successes, one a scratch built Davis DA-2A in 1/4 scale. Was a good flyer but intermodulation interference wiped it out in '85.

Funny,, I thought the original footage of the take-off looked very stable. I would be interested in plans and maybe building a full-scale version. Not for everyday flying of course but it really did not look too bad. Spin around Aviation all of my 58 years and I've been around experimental most of that time. This design I think for it era this is very interesting.

The us navy produced a series of these aircraft in the early part of WW2. They could take off in short distances but landing visibility was iffy. In the end the improving conventional designs out preformed them. There were some performances advantages, but they couldn't over come the shortcomings.

¿No? Salut +
@julioaeroperu
@julioaeroperu 5 жыл бұрын

Best of luck getting another model flying. Not much is known about this plane, other than the one short video with it. 130hp seems like it was strongly over-powered. It must have been a bullet at maximum speed. The Arup S-2 had only 37 hp for 95+kts, and the Canova "flatfish" flew with much less power than this.

I can only imagine what the induced drag on this thing was...
@JFrazer4303
@JFrazer4303 5 жыл бұрын
Short aspect-ratio planes don't have high drag unless they're trying to fly slowly. at ~50% power and 30 degrees + A, the wingtip vortices close around behind it, trapping a "bubble" of low pressure allowing them to fly slowly. At the same time it traps the flow from the leading edge over the top, preventing it from separating, so they don't stall. This is presented in a NASA publication at the site for the Wainfan facetmobile. The extreme drag and high lift is not permanent. They don't always carry around a burden of high induced drag. It's elective and temporary. See also the Arup planes of the 1930s, progenitors of the Vought plane. Arup S-2 was ~800 lbs, and 37 hp engine took it 85 kts. Arup S-4 was 1100+ lbs, and 69 hp engine took it 100 kts, with silly slow 18 kt landing speed. Facetmobile had a tiny engine, and could fly at less than 16kts, where the pitot tube stopped working. Not draggy.
