They offered me 15K rmb in 2020 whilst other companies were offering close to 20K. I think EF banks on the fact that they offer to pay for your airfare (which is very expensive), 2 weeks free hotel stay and a 12K rmb loan. The contract ended up being canceled due to the emergence of COVID-19. They DEFINITELY know that South Africans are desperate due to our high unemployment rates among graduates.
@NomfundoMbatha

You're 100% spot on. They bank on those enticing tactics. Other schools and companies do offer loans too, btw. The most interesting thing is they offered you 15 000 almost 3 years ago yet they're offering people way less now. This is upsetting!

I'm glad u finally address this.. people do not talk about it that's why u find them sour... The fact that you're consided a native and u have qualifications u have a value so don't allow cheap salary.. 18k is the minimum for someone with no experience doesn't matter which city unless it's big u can go 20k minimum coz you'll feel bad finding your "colleagues" earning 25+ after u accepted 16k..youll have a looong year

Kinda in the same boat as some commentators but also,I'm not from one of the Big 7 recognised countries (an edge that South Africans have). I signed up contract for 14K RMB but it's not so bad as there is housing, flight reimbursement, insurance, lunch, monthly trips for groceries and transport to and from work.

Yeah I just got jerked around by a recruiter and EF. Recruiters have now started to just tell teachers there's a school interested and when you ask what the name of the school is, they just say you'll find out when you interview. Recruiter initially messaged me saying it met above my salary expectation of 20K. Turns out the secret school was EF. They offered 13K base with some COVID package of 4K per month and 667 per month flight pay back totaling 8K. So essentially combined was under 18K. I don't count the COVID package because that could end anytime. So essentially 13700 or so per month...........with no housing and no housing stipend. Ridiculous. I mean c'mon, 13K base - 6K housing - 2K food - 2K living expenses, you're left with 3K for one of the biggest international cities in the world which is about 500 USD. WTF.................what social life or traveling opportunities. They'll get a shit ton of work out of you only to leave you with nothing to do at the end of the month except treat yourself to a once a week treat.
@NomfundoMbatha

Gosh! they're so dodgy. It should be a crime at this point. The sad thing is many people are taking these offers. Imagine barely having money while working in one of the biggest cities in the world!

Just got an e mail from EF stating they did not want to move forward with my application. Made me laugh because out of all of the reviews and searching I have done, there isn't a single positive thing I could find about that company except for that you'll get overworked and gain experience quick but at a high cost and for low returns/pay. As to how they are still in business is quite a mystery. Anyone in this industry with any semblance of an idea of what value they hold or what first time positions would offer should avoid this company like the plague.

Thanks for keeping everyone informed. In the major cities pay should be well above 20k rmb. If we're taking 15k then what are we saving? If we undercut one another the race to the bottom will hurt everyone. Confidently refuse lowball offers.

@NomfundoMbatha Жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you but realistically speaking? Schools rarely wanna pay new teachers that much, especially if they’re black, African and female. There’s that.
@jessehorstman
@jessehorstman Жыл бұрын
@@NomfundoMbatha I can't really speak to your experience as a female with darker skin, but our financial needs are no different. If we accept hand to mouth wages then we will live hand to mouth. That doesn't make sense when there is a shortage of english teachers. I think you hit the nail on the head, recruiters have found some desparation among the S. African recruits and so they are trying to exploit it. I have discovered that getting my documents legalized and obtaining a visa is both time consuming and expensive. If we cannot find a job in China which will pay a proper wage then I suspect we can earn a comfortable income in our home countries by coaching and assisting would be teachers. I wonder if we should even form a TEFL teachers' union. I'm not here to argue with you. As I said earlier, talking openly about living expenses and long term planning benefits all of us. Thank you. Personally, I was also offered some low offers 16-20k and I flatly refused them. 25k could be workable in many cities, but in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, etc. I think the offer should begin at around 32k.

@jessehorstman
@jessehorstman Жыл бұрын
@@NomfundoMbatha As do I. Consider the consequences of selling ourselves short and encouraging others to do the same. If we drive the prices down then we will live in poverty for a lifetime and our children will suffer. On the other hand, if we hold out for proper wages then we may need to endure poverty for a few months or years, but if our service has value then the employer will eventually agree to pay and we can enjoy prosperity rather than simply working for nothing. People in war can live with very little. We can also live with very little, but it isn't a goal to shoot for. We are not moving away from our families and support networks to a foreign land to live in poverty. Our risks should be rewarded and they can be. The market has supported higher wages in the past so we know it can still do it in the present. I don't think we can afford not to turn down low offers. We are not slaves. We are free people with degrees in higher education. If the employers don't value us then we should not work for them and we should discourage anyone from doing so in our stead. Those people are taking food from the mouths of our children and they will find themselves in an impoverished state when the reality of their situation catches up to their poor planning.
