Rewatching this here after 6 months (and 100s of cartoons later), and still find it a funny, wonderfully dynamic cartoon, and still love its exceptionally beautiful, rich painting.

@gnikcohs I don't know if those are actually oil paintings in the backgrounds. Oils have a texture that makes it impossible to film under the cels, as the heat of the camera light would tend to cause smearing of the oils onto the cel. Usually these animation studios used watercolor or its opaque counterpart gouache. In some instances, however, studios DID use OIL WASHES, which were thinned down oils that looked more like watercolors but featured a brighter hue.

During World War II, Paul Terry did his part for animated cartoon morale by having Gandy and Sourpuss inducted into the Army (Sourpuss being "Top Sergeant", and Gandy the "Private" who usually drives him crazy), and they had many unusual adventures while serving our country during wartime. By 1945, they were civilians again. Arthur Kay is Gandy; Tom Morrison is Sourpuss.

@vawlkee51 Considering that's how Kricfalusi seems to interpret their relationship and how he says that those two inspired the dynamic between Ren & Stimpy... what happened in the Adult Party Cartoon doesn't seem nearly as surprising.

Gandy Goose and Sourpuss are my favorite cartoon characters. It is funny the way they were in each other's dreams and at the end of each episode there were always shown doing in their beds what they were doing in their dreams. I really hope they would made these cartoons on dvd in the future. Also, can someone upload Ben Hare from the Bob Clampett Cartoons?

Paul Terry once said: "If Disney is the Tiffany's of animation, I'm the Woolworth's." Meaning that he wanted his cartoons produced at the lowest possible cost.

I liked Paul Terry over Disney.

@@dpf5939 They are better than Disney even if the animation wasn't very good. I enjoyed the Walt Disney cartoons more as a kid than I do as an adult; they're very childish with a few exceptions. When it comes to humor though nothing comes close to the Warner Bros. cartoons with Bugs Bunny and his pals, (the one exception is maybe the Tex Avery cartoons he did at MGM and some of them are hilarious

This cartoon is PERFECT. No, logos, nice beautifully washed out - yet, rich colors! If this were on DVD or Blu, it would be brightened up and colors all stupid like today's cartoons. I am GLAD these are not on video. Gandy I think is the best thing Terrytoons ever made.
@gnikcohs12 жыл бұрын
I have no idea. I don't think you can find them very readily on DVD either. Wish you could. But I REALLY wish there were more of them on YT. I don't need tv with commercials, or even DVD if I can watch it here. I have happily watched 100s of cartoons on YT. Many are more or less forgotten, overlooked, or ignored. I would love to see more Gandy's here. Amazon is selling video tapes of it, but I haven't had a tape player in some time. Maybe I'll get one of those dual decks next time.

Occasionally, he'd voice one of the magpies [especially if they were singing a duet]. Usually, it was Dayton Allen (1947-'51), then Roy Halee.

@SparkyMK3 Good, especially lush, background art is one of the most important and enjoyable elements of a good cartoon. Often it is stronger than the action, gags, plot, etc., but rarely gets its due. It is really strong here, rich like oil paintings, and draws you into the whole toon world.
@gnikcohs13 жыл бұрын
@ESLinstructor1 I imagine oil was way too expensive and time consuming for 99% of the time But however they did it, they sometimes got that amazing richness such as we see here. For me it is often VERY affecting. When I mentioned oil I was actually thinking of those Carl Barks Donald Duck oil paintings or Mac Raboy oils of Capt. Marvel Jr. If I were young and going to be an artist, I think I would do fine art oil paintings based on Golden Age cartoons and comics. Amazing how rich they can look.

Remember Bakshi - Kricfalusi's 1988 "Mighty Mouse" series on network TV? They intimated that Sourpuss and Gandy were gay lovers - and I'm not kidding.

Then possibly there is more to the strange Mrs Jones than meets the eye. Or maybe it does meet the eye, she seems to be as well equipped as Gandy is at 6:24 - 6:26, IF you buy into the gay lovers interpretation.
