Esma was born on August 8, 1943, in Skopje, now the capital of Macedonia.During her life she has performed in more than 8000 concerts in 30 countries, with her late husband Stevo Teodosievski she has fostered forty-seven children, and she has received numerous accolades for her humanitarian work. By her own account she has created more than 500 works of art.These include 108 singles, 20 albums, and 6 movies.

I listened to her live in Komotini in the Balkan Festival almost 10 years ago, without knowing who she is. Still remember the chills when she started signing. Her voice was a revelation. The first one to sing this song composed for a then Yugoslav movie (Skupljači perja, in English (I Even Met Happy Gypsies) ) was Olivera Katarina - a Serbian singer. I saw a video of gypsy musicians from my local library, forget the name off hand. That's how I first heard of her. I listen to death and black metal and yet I love her music. Her voice is so powerful and beautiful. When she sings you stop and listen. It doesn't matter how they are dressed or what she is; Greek, Macedonian, Slav.....music transcends ethnicity.
