I will say in the defense of Esme she wasn't born in modern times like Bella so the modern sensibilities that Bella grew up with weren't a thing for Esme. Esme was born and raised in a time where it was a women's job to be dutiful. Regardless of being free spirted. I think this is why she couldn't be a dutiiful wife to her first husband was because she didn't love him. That is why this behaviour is less shocking for Esme and comes across more stifling when seen in Bella. As well we have to keep in mind there wasn't a dating process back then. It was more of Hi, so you're going to be my future husband. Nice to meet you. Next week there married and being enamored or liking your partner was starting a marriage on the right foot. Esme got that with Carlisle and not with her first husband. So in short everything was much easier with Carlisle even becoming a Vampire. As well Esme's Vampire ability is supposed to be her inhanced caring motherly nature. I do think this is lacking in the books. Where as we see more of this portrayed by the actress, I like that we get a look of shock and horror when Carlisle is killed in the vision in breaking dawn or how she is visibly taken back when Leah scarfices herself in the battle for Esme. That is the true mark of good actor in my opinion someone who can not only read the lines but embody the character. It's not the actress's fault all of Stephanie Myers female characters all share the same glaring problem. They are shells of what well written female characters would be like. As they are written by an author who is a part of patriarchy forward clut where women are second class citizens and that is deeply ingrained in all of them. Like the famous words say Keep Sweet and Obey. So all the female characters are version of this perfect wife stero type to there more fleshed out male counterparts who are aloud to struggle and be "human" but the women are not.
@rachelstanford97847 күн бұрын
I agree with everything but the part where you said women in Esme's time were taught to be dutiful. Esme was around to see the women's suffrage movement come to fruition through the 19th Amendment in the 1920s. There were several landmark feminist victories throughout the US, such as the passing of AOC laws. So, it's kind of this weird nebulous place, where you're right, women weren't as free as we are now, but they were definitely giving patriarchy a lot of push-back. I think it's also worth noting that there are several personal accounts of women throughout history stating how much they despise their roles as subservient wives and wanting so much more. So, idk, history's not a monolith, in my opinion.

I always thought that vampires in Twilight had mates and that it worked similar to the imprints the wolves had. Like when they had a mate, there's really not much they wouldn't do for them or to be with them. Victoria wanting to avenge James, Irina holding a grudge against the Cullens bc they're friendly with the wolves who killed Laurent even though he literally was about to kill Bella, Marcus wanting to leave the Volturi with his mate, Chelsea basically manipulating the Volturi into keeping her mate with her even though his powers aren't interesting enough for them. I recently re-read the series and the way Bella always talked about Edward and being with him, for me it seemed like a stronger power than just being in love, but more like "this is meant to be and it was chosen by a higher power". If that's the case for all vampire mates, I wouldn't wonder why Esme would follow Carlisle without asking questions. The wolves who imprinted really weren't much different with their imprints.

I agree 100% and to add to your comment there's a part in the books where Rosalie saves Emmett from a bear attack and carries him back to Carlisle while holding her breath and then literally begs him to save Emmett for her❤ And they work so well- Emmett doesn't try to 'fix' her... they accept eachother for who they are, meant to be 😁

Exactly. But we both read the books. Like many others did. And many didn't. It just sounds like the woman in the video only watched the movies. Because saying that Bella blindly does anything Edward tells her to do, sounds like a person who didn't read the books and doesn't realize that the entire plot of the books is sometimes based upon or only moved further, because Bella once again DOESN'T do what Edward told her to do. The only thing that surprises me it's that it's 2024 and people still want to debate and debase Twilight like it's a current phenomenon, WITHOUT having read and understood the books.

@@NelliePlaysSkyrim Didn't Rosalie fall in love with Emmet becaus his eyes reminding her of her mortal bestie's baby boy? That absolute squicky reason aside, didn't Rosalie also have a major problem with being turned into a vampire without her consent? (Carlisle turned her to be Edward's bride - and he ended up rejecting her; giving her even more of a reason to be the bitter biatch she is). So her grabbing a wounded/dying Emmett and begging Carlise to turn Emmett into her would be husband without his consent makes her a rather huge hypocrite.

Honestly I like esmes story better than bellas. Esme jumping off a cliff because she lost her baby after running away from an abusive husband justifies the suicidal intentions more than your high school vampire bf breaking up with you suddenly. Bella is just dramatic and annoying esme has real baggage. Yeah it can be argued that's its crazy that she doesn't want to marry after meeting Carlisle once, she still moved on with her life. She lived a life

Bella's last bit of humanity died the moment she relented to Jacob imprinting on Renesmee. After that, it was all about Edward. Seriously, shortly after being distracted from ending Jacob (via one of his wolf buddies getting in the way and taking a blow meant for him, snapping Bella out of her justifiable rage), Bella was whisked off to see the wedding gift the family gave her and Edward - a house of their own to bang to their undead hearts' content. After that, Bella had no concerns over Jacob's creepy attachment to her baby.

Its almost like siring a vampire has some power inherent in there. ALMOST like the vampire who makes you, can essentially tell you what to do for a certain amount of time... so its real weird that an established vampire sires his own wife, but how else do people who've learned not to easily trust others, ensure that their marriage remains loyal and trust worthy, she cant betray you if you tell her not to... and she has to ultimately do what you say 😂 I really liked when TVD explored the dangerous implications of the sire bond especially in romantic relationships. Its seems like SM was lightly touching on it and comparing it to the traditional values of a marriage, to love and obey.

Some use it intentionally others it's portrayed as just something that happens, and the part they just "follow the leader" is because they were SIRED by them, another natural ability for vampires, the ones that turn them are their sires and they have some permanent link between eachother, some it's unconditional loyalty & obedience.

I honestly remember reading Twilight because it was popular but never liking the series. I just didn’t understand how a teenage girl could pine over a guy so badly. I think Stephanie Meyer has some very messed up ideals and in retrospect, it just makes me feel disturbed by the books even more. There’s this weird air of grooming going on. I also remember Robert calling Stephanie crazy because he said she believes she’s Bella and that just makes the books even weirder. The books gloss over abuse and trauma instead of exploring the impact. I honestly think it does add to this air or inhumane vampires living among humans but it also feels like lazy writing.

I think Esme has attached to Edward because her baby and Edward passed in similar ways. He died of a fever before he turned and her baby passed of a fever. Theyre selfish, so i dont doubt that she would want him around and to see her as a mother for her own selfish feelings of ownership. Explains why Carlisle would trun him at all. He doesnt really feel pity for the people he takes. Hes feeding his own needs and one of them is to keep Esme happy for his own peace.

My theory: It’s the vampire allure. It changes a person because they’re not meant to survive it. Once one turns it on you, you’re done. You were meant to be a meal. It’s why those who don’t have the allure directed at them are uncomfortable around them. They sense something isn’t right!

But this has intereting implications. Twilight functions as an earthly fantasy vision of the LDS afterlife. My understanding of the endowment ceremony is that women are dependent on their husbands. The loss of personality in women (as exhibited by Esme and Bella) or a purified rebirth, means that men maintain their authority and sense of self while women, who are dependent in their husbands for purpose and identity. Women are dependent on men for religious salvation. This is an incomplete theory. I will keep turning it in my head.

He will never talk about it ever from what I remember it he said twilight gave him opportunities, but also ruined his life fans were terrible and the only reason he interacted him is because he said when he was having bad days he would just take a random fan that was outside his hotel room have dinner with her and then leave her there.

she fell from a tree when she was 16 and broke her foot I am not sure whether it's book information or the Illustrated Guide's info, but Carlisle's kindness left an impression on Esme and she was reminiscing it through the rest of her human life (which lasted for 10 more years - where she married an abuser, had a child, worked as a teacher to get away from her husband, watched her baby die, sewercided bc of depression -> when she wakes up, she sees the doctor who healed her 10 years ago) Midnight Sun info: Carlisle didn't think of being with Esme when he saved her, he just thought it was a shame the girl he healed 10 years ago had such an awful life she threw herself off the cliff, gave her a second chance. Edward was the one who noticed Esme's infatuation with Carlisle, warned him. Carlisle realized he can return the feelings.

I don't think it's strange that Esme fell in love with Carlile after they met once. She was very young and lived in a strict family. And considering that she couldn't choose her fiancé, it's not surprising that she took a stand against marriage after meeting a handsome, charming man who probably gave her all the attention in the world when they first met. And after all the terrible things she's been through, all the abuse, pain and repression that led her to jump off a cliff, that prince charming she met appears to "save" her and give her a second chance at living a happy life. He's kind and treats her well, and since she probably feels like she owes him her life, she dedicates herself to doing everything he wants to make him happy and pay off that debt. something like when people who grew up in abusive families fall in love with the first person who treats them with the slightest respect and dignity, and then they idolize that person because they are the best person in the world, kind, wonderful and flawless. If the person is beautiful then... it's like Bella seeing Edward as a god in human form and feeling lucky that he chose someone as "average" as her.
