Hi Matt, thanks for these videos - very useful. I've watched a good few other videos too, but haven't quite been able to work out if it's worn bearings on our machine or some other issue with similar symptoms. I wonder if you could help make my mind up on this... The brushes on our 3 year old Smeg washing machine have recently been replaced - in fact, the engineer changed the entire motor because we'd paid the cost within the job fee. We are heavy users of the machine (and have had many an unbalanced load in it... ooops) - and I suspect the bearings have gone this time although the repair guy on the phone today says this would be rare in a 3 year old machine. There's very little excess up and down movement with the drum and instead plenty of movement from front to back with the drum - could this still be bearings? The machine makes a rumbling sound at the back when the drum is turned, it's not as smooth a turn as it was, but nothing seems to drag it - it just seems a more eliptical turn and less centred. On a spin, the noise is like metal on metal being finely ground - it's not screechy, but it does get louder and louder and higher as the spin progresses, until it's almost like a permeating song coming from what used to be a pretty silent machine. We're just working out if it's better to call it quits with this Smeg machine if the bearings are gone or to spend almost the equivalent of a cheaper machine to have it fixed. Normally we'd have a go ourselves at changing parts, but the washing needing done is building up, we're travelling a lot with work at the mo and, although we hate throwaway mentality and fix lots of our household good ourselves, sometimes the convenience of a next day delivery new machine solves problems quickly. If I knew it was bearings I'd buy another machine. If I thought it was something simpler and cheaper to fix, we'd get the repair guy in or take a look at it ourselves. Thanks in advance.

Bearing. Classic bearing noise and that it changes pitch with speed. Just make sure there isn't anything that is in contact with the drum as it spins that could also be scrapping on the drum as it turns. (would more than likely be something foreign that isn't part of the machine that went in with a wash load. Possibly something left in a pocket)

I have a Hotpoint aquarius WMF760, (looks just like one on the video) that shook like no ones business, and sometimes gave an F-005 error, which I think was a short due to shaking too violently. Bought 2 new dampers for my washer. When went to replace, the original dampers had actually fractured some of the bottom of the washing machine where they affixed. In effect tearing out a hole the size of a penny washer. Fitted the new dampers with some very large washers (to cover the torn out holes), all now works fine

+Martin Stockdale Thanks for your comments Martin. If your wash load was out of balance regularly the excessive shaking would have created metal fatigue resulting in the damage. If you wash heavy items together in future not only will the machine shake less it is likely to help prevent further damage.:-)

Hello eSpares, Perhaps you can shed some light onto this for me. Will make it as brief as possible and leave out the story part: *Received free 2014 LG washer: WM3370HWA with matching gas dryer *Functioned normally *Added a little extra water up to the drain in rubber seal for large items, king bed covers *pump would remove any excess water above and beyond the program options, successfully *The FE fill error would display on the screen until the correct water level was reached then cycle continued again *Selected extra water, but it wasn't enough *Selected "warm" water temp * Water temp in tank was good for this *Used hot water inside house for cleaning, etc *Heating coil turned on and electric burning odor emitted from washer vent *Cycle finished *Sanitize option selected for next wash *Electric burning smell worsened *stopped sanitize load and switched to warm, burning smell not as severe as sanitize mode Still think it is the heater coil Questions: *Could heating coil and thermistor be caked or covered in hard water minerals? *Should this "odor" be there? *Technically, how long do thermistors and heater coils last, on average, of course? *How long do washer pumps last? *This reminds me of my hot tub that needed a new heater coil in the first 3-5 years, same symptoms and similar odors *What is the average life span of the original parts on this model machine? *Springs, shock absorbers, aka dampners, heater coil, thermistor, water pump, front washer control panel, and the main interior control panel? *There is a lot of movement in the drum for unbalanced loads. The machine will attempt 3xs to rebalance the load and spin slowly instead. Thanks ahead of time, i would add inthe story and this would take you through all the steps of what happened, but I don't think its necessary. Regards, Robert
@eSpares6 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, wow a lot of questions lol we will try to answer as many as we can but some will be diplomatic. The error code FE on LG machine indicates the machine has overfilled which indicates a faulty inlet valve, over time limescale can build up inside the machine and usually elements are the ones affected most. We would not expect an odour from the machine so try a washing machine cleaner to get rid of the odour. We can not comment on the lifespan of components and it varies so much it would only be an opinion and not factually accurate. We also have a video to help with the balance issue kzbin.info/www/bejne/q3ylqmBvg6p5a6M

Hi eSpares, My house is an original 1950s with a 2 wire ungrounded electric system in the original house section. Terrible wiring in the main part of the house, but the newer additions added later all have the 3 wire upgrade romex type of power cable. The washer is connected to the 2 wire system through a 3 port socket, which I didn't know about until I removed the socket cover. The only other available socket is over 5 feet away located behind the dryer. I will have to run an acceptable extension cable for this to the washer because hiring an electrician is out of the question. The Fe display only turned on when the washer added to the additional water I put in to wash the king bed covers recently. Once the correct level was reached the cycle continued and the error message went away. So im not too concerned about that part at the moment. No wonder appliance repair companies can charge so much for a visit, these machines are just so much more complicated than the ones I purchased 25 years ago..

As we try and explain Anshul, the likely cause of shaking is what you are washing so next time it occurs look at the mix of heavy items. If there is any heavy items put them separately on a heavy wash with enough to spread around the drum and i should resolve your problem.

Hi nw8000, now that is the question so if you have made sure the machine is level then remember that each machine has a load capacity 6kg 7kg 8kg so don't overload it or under load it as both will cause issues. Different brands will spin at different speeds and cope differently with loads so don't put a bath mat in on its own and if you have a problem stop redistribute the clothes and try again.

Really informative videos you guys make! With this one and the "Diagnose Drum Problems"-video, I already know what making the bad noises from our washing machine without even opened it yet. Recognized the sound right away from the loose counterweight at the top when you loosened it a bit :) Is there any way to diagnose wornout shock absorbers at the bottom without having to remove them? Are they oil-filled or just a spring in them? Those were my alternative suspects before I watched this vid. Those or the springs at the top, but those are a bit easier to check.
@eSpares8 жыл бұрын
Many engineers have suspected and replaced the dampers after customers have complained of excessive shaking. Nearly all of the times I have replaced these they have turned out to be fine (unless obviously rusty or broken). It is much more likely the problem will be due to the wash load being out of balance, that is why we made this video in an attempt to show this.

In my 22 years of appliance repair I would say a shaking, banging walking front load washer is the biggest headache. A few things to consider: #1 not all home floors can handle a front load washer (especially the heavy bulky ones like LG, Whirlpool, Samsung etc). A simple test you can perform is to place a glass of water on top of your washer, and, standing right in front of it sprig up and down on the floor (not jump, spring.) if the water sloshes around in the glass you are hooped. #2 even if the washer has leveled the load, when it starts revving up you will get a jumping vibrating tub until it reaches around 600 RPM. #3 If your rubber feet on the washer have worn through and it is sitting on the metal part of the feet, it will cause this problem. #4 if you have a lot of dust and soapy residue under the rubber feet it can cause the washer to "walk". These are things you can check in an uncontrolled situation.

@eSpares8 жыл бұрын
+Phil Kocho Hi Phil, are you sure it is not a balance issue and shaking excessively see 0:47 . As a x field engineer I replaced dampers many times when previous engineers had ordered them for this problem and found less than 5% were faulty as the problem was usually the load. To stop a machine that slips on vinyl or tiles a piece of Bluetac under two feet is usually enough unless severely out of balance.
@bernardpayne28828 жыл бұрын
I found a cause of unbalanced loads in my Bosch; it was not spinning up gently but instead jumping to full speed, giving no chance to distribute the load evenly. The cause of this speed gremlin was a broken wire to the motor (the leftmost wire in the block connector). I hope nobody else suffers the same symptom - it's extreme.
@eSpares8 жыл бұрын
+Bernard Payne Thanks for your comments, the wire would likely have been to the tacho coil. This feeds back to the control board the speed of the motor, when broken the motor will go to maximum speed briefly and stop. This is shown in another video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/emakqGp5d6p6hqs

Hi Mat, Would you by any chance know how to remove the drum from the washing machine in this video? I have a similar machine which has the suspension springs attached to a metal bar running accross the chassis. I have seen your colleague's video on how to replace washing machine bearings (that washing machine did not however feature that bar).
@eSpares9 жыл бұрын
mikevad360 If you follow the bearing video as a guide to check you are removing all the parts necessary to remove the drum and then undo the four screws on the bar you (with the help of a friend) can use the bar to lift the drum up and out. When I have done this before I would not disconnect the dampers as they simply slide apart and once the tub is out are easier to remove and reassemble them, and then attach when fitting the tub.Note this machine (and maybe yours) has a 'welded tub' without bolts around the rim that cannot be dismantled to replace bearings.
@mikevad3609 жыл бұрын
eSpares Thanks Mat, that was very helpful, I was able to lift the drum out of the chassis and luckily the tub on this machine is not welded. I am however having some trouble taking the pulley wheel off. I have tried hammering the rod which seems to be connected to the drum but it doesn't budge. Without removing the pulley wheel I cannot separate the drum from the tub therefore making access to the bearings impossible. Do you have any suggestions for me regarding this ?
@eSpares9 жыл бұрын
mikevad360 Start by using a releasing fluid like WD40 and if that and a sharp tap with a hammer does not move it try carefully heating the pulley with a hair dryer to help it expand and release.

Hello, how do you repair a Samsung washer showing UE error. The machine is balanced
@eSpares7 жыл бұрын
Hi Jimmy, the machine may be balanced but if the washing load is not it will cause an UE error. Try the machine empty or with light items and it should be fine. Remember anytime you have a UE error if it is down to heavy items the evidence will be inside the drum when unloaded. This is why we produced this video to try and explain this better.

What about if the dampers are bad? Would that also cause the same issue with a unbalanced load? I wish someone would have a video to show bad dampers.
@eSpares5 жыл бұрын
Hi Sean Brunette, the normal reason for the machine causing a noise and shaking badly is an unbalanced load but if you have checked that then the dampers could cause a noise and affect how the machine spins.

Hi Ian, the concrete weight is used to 'dampen' movement on the spin cycle and will usually only come loose if there has been a lot of excessive shaking on spin caused by out of balanced wash loads. Following this video will help understand how to avoid this and prolong the machines life.

It is often the front weight that will come loose and sometimes you may find concrete 'dust' under the machine where the movement has started to damage the weight. Keep an eye on the machine and watch the load balance to ensure it does not come loose again.
@The4thDensity7 жыл бұрын
That's what happen to my machine. Very loud banging noise on spin and dust gathering underneath where the concrete block was wearing away due to the movement. Thanks to your video I've managed to fix the problem and saved me pounds.

I have an Indesit that moves across the floor. The repairer says there is nothing wrong with the washer. It is the suspended floor which is causing the machine to walk and produces a loud noise. Is he right? what can I do about it?
@eSpares7 жыл бұрын
Hi John, It is likely there is nothing wrong with the machine especially if recently checked by an engineer. The purpose of this video is to show how heavy items in the washing can cause this problem. The larger capacity the machine and the higher the spin speed the greater the energy that has to be absorbed. Increasing the mass will help so consider placing on a concrete paving slab as it will help and try to keep heavy items together and avoid mixing light and heavy items.

Hi, Bought the washing machine 3 months before. There was no shaking or vibrations until now, but last 2 times while the machine is in spin its shaking and vibrating too much but grinding sound is not heard. Please help. The machine was levelled properly. PLEASE help
@eSpares5 жыл бұрын
Hi Lincy, the main reason for your washing machine to shake is because of an uneven load causing the shaking if the machine is perfectly level you need to redistribute the load and try again. Check the suspension underneath to make sure nothing has disconnected or has broken as well.
@lincyjohn44265 жыл бұрын
@@eSpares Hi Matt Your video helped me to understand about balanced weight. Always I used to put one heavy item with other much lighter ones because I was scared of overloading the machine. Thank you. Also thanking you for the timely reply to my query. One more question. The machine is whirlpool 6 kg fresh care. How much dry cloth ( weight) is the maximum I can put for a single time wash? Heavy items as you said I understood I have to wash together. Then what about lighter ones if I am washing lighter ones together how much total weight is accurate for the machine. Also is it alright to use dry washing powder always. The machine booklet suggest different weight for different wash mode,like rapid 30 Max3 kg, mixed Max 3.5 kg also recommend dry or liquid soap for each option. Should I consider those instructions or I can add cloth weight equally for all kinds of wash option ? PLEASE advise. Thank you.

Hi Edgar. When a machine stops while washing it is usually related to a heating problem. European machines will have a heater that you would need to check but your model (USA?) does not so must take in a hot water supply. As you have just been working on it check both water supplies are turned on first.
@SYDDOS8 жыл бұрын
What if the floor area under the worktop is uneven? You don't have a long enough tool to adjust the BACK legs and you don't have enough space to use a spirit level on top of the machine, while it's under the worktop.
@eSpares8 жыл бұрын
+Sydney Athome You can use a spirit level on the sides and front panel to show if they are upright or the machine is sloping but it is not necessary to have a machine absolutely dead level. However it is important to adjust the legs to ensure the machine does not rock. Try adjusting before pushing in place and readjust until it sits firm.
@SYDDOS8 жыл бұрын
+eSpares I used simple maths, a calliper and spirit level. 1. I turned all the machine feet to close position. 2. I used the spirit level and calliper to measure the height/depth to level on the floor where the machine legs would be standing. 3. I adjusted each machine legs to compensate for the uneven floor. Works great.
@eSpares8 жыл бұрын
+Sydney Athome Great, now you just need to remember about washing heavy items. :-)
@eSpares8 жыл бұрын
Hi Shohid, it is not essential for the appliance to be 'dead level' but it should not be leaning in one direction. Most spirit levels can measure a vertical post so use this method against the front panel and its edges to check if 'significantly' out.

If it is (was) a new washer the shipping bolts for locking the outer drum weren't removed. To travel more than 5ft or so would require a longer than normal power cord (or it bounced down a steep hill).

Hi, I just watched your video on the the shaking washing machine. Where do you get a weight like that? My front load LG washer doesn't have a weight like that, but there are 2 springs that it dangles from. Each time there is a wash there is banging noise that the drum has excessive movement. Can the springs actually support the drum and that weight together? There are extra spring connections on the top of the LG plastic drum, I wonder if those are meant to have springs connected to them in order to stop the excessive drum movement? I just have so many questions regarding this washer, it is new for me. Thanks for the videos
@eSpares6 жыл бұрын
Hi Rob, every washing machine will have a concrete weight fitted, the machine is designed to support the tub by means of suspension and springs and has worked for many years.
@robfries53686 жыл бұрын
Hi, I found the weights, they are attached to the front of the plastic drum, but they are "SMALL" size, very. Oh well, I'm still wondering how I can find out if my shock absorbers are still good. It might be answered in another reply. THx you very much

Hi Rob, check for any damage to the suspension as if they break it can cause issues and most are creased so check that is still working when they are moving.

HI eSpares, I have the new control board for my LG washer. The fuse has continuity so it is good. I want to test the board first by just connecting the incoming power from the noise filter to see if the red diode glows. it is a new board, and it should glow, but I don't wish to connect anything to it yet until I finish checking the parts behind the front cover. matt, I have a wm2701hv by LG and i have a a knocking sound at the start of spin cycles. This is only at the beginning of cycles at lower speeds and the machine will eventually level off and speed up thus reaching high speeds. I have just tried to solve this issue replacing the dampers with new Original equipment replacements from lg. The symptom continues however. Curious enough this isn't a constant knocking noise like a loose counter weight as described in the video. On this particular model LG the weights are on the front of the drum. I feel like the noise is produced in this area almost as if the bottom counterweight is hitting against the front panel. thanks, Ronny & Laura
@eSpares8 жыл бұрын
+laurahsu2227 Check the bolts on the weight as if only a little loose they can knock at certain 'speeds'.

Hi! Our Bosch has recently started vibrating slightly more then usually during a fast spin with a full load. The machine is level and when I put pressure on top of it, the vibration seems to ease off slightly. Is that a sign of a loosened balance weight or have the shock absorbers started wearing off? :-)
@eSpares8 жыл бұрын
+Amingr This sounds like the feet may need resetting to ensure it is evenly pressing on all four feet. The shock absorbers very rarely wear and a loose weight can be checked by looking at the bolts as shown at 2:09

The drum was also scraping the inner tub! How this happened??? Can somebody answer my question? Also, this happened a long time ago.

Hi Acer, it sounds like the issue was related to the bearings failing which can result in too much movement in the drum.
