A scientist has a mercury thermometer with a completely illegible scale. Wanting to measure the temperature of a substance X with the thermometer, he adopted the following procedure: under normal pressure (1 atm), he immersed the thermometer in boiling water and observed that the mercury column reached a length of 10 cm; later, placing the thermometer in melting ice, the length of the mercury column became 2 cm.
