Ok, here's the long discussion about using Memory Deluge in a Mindsplice Apparatus deck I promised in the video: So, you noticed that Memory Deluge works based on the mana you spend and Mindsplice discounts the mana you spend, and you are preparing to comment about how bad it is. Let me reply in advance. First, at its absolute "worst" (i.e. with a Mindsplice on 5 or more), Deluge is still "Draw 4" for 4 mana, which is a card of its own would be a better rate than any card in Standard will give you on its own. So that’s not a bad floor. But more importantly, Deluge is amazing when you don't have Mindsplice active yet, to help you find what you need to get to (and live until) the situation where you do have an Apparatus. And that's what I prioritize when making deck building choices, since once you have Mindsplice active, things tend to go well more-or-less regardless. I think the best criticism you could make about Deluge in this deck is not that the cost reduction mechanic hurts it, but rather that being a 4-drop makes it conflict with Mindsplice. You do sometimes get awkward hands with nothing to do turn 3 and then both of them to cast on turn 4. But it's such a strong card that personally I think the raw power outweighs that downside.

Yeah, for me the biggest problem with mindsplice is that it's a 4 drop and you might not want to use it (and given how typically other things are expensive, it tends to mess up with your curve) 4 is also the mana cost of the black tutor spell of OTJ Augury is alright but it tends to clog up space. I am a bit partial to intimidation campaign as a way to draw (plus it helps keep up some life). In theory with augury, while it won't be that much cheaper, it is more consistent card draw and since most of your other things tend to be cheap, it helps cycle into just having your answers later on.

Why not silver scrutiny though? Or adding avarice? For looking mindsplice
@BullingdonMTG
@BullingdonMTG 9 ай бұрын
@Vanquist Apologies, I missed this question. For me, Silver Scrutiny is in a class of card that is just "win more" for this deck, in that it's amazing when you have a Mindsplice with active counters, but not very good otherwise. And for me, I optimize the card choices for how good they are when you don't have the Mindsplice, since when you do have one, almost any card in the deck will be good enough. And when you don't have a 'Splice, Deluge is just SO much better than Scrutiny that it's not even close. If Scrutiny could be played at instant speed for any price, it'd be a different story (that's why Robbery is not in this class of "win more" card, because it can be great regardless, mostly due to the instant speed nature of it). That said, I think Scrutiny would be a totally defensible choice for someone building a deck like this, but for me it doesn't quite make the cut.

The problem I have with deluge is it’s a card I don’t want to craft because it rotates soon 😅 guess I shouldn’t have taken a 2 year break in arena, I came back at WOE

Thanks! I keep going back to it and it continues to perform really well -- 74% win percentage after 50 games, probably the best record for a deck I've had in recent memory. Just feels really strong against almost any opponent, and fun to play too!

at 44:10 i think it's better to target the creature, they will likely sac the enchantment to protect their creature, thereby denying them 2 map tokens
@BullingdonMTG
@BullingdonMTG 9 ай бұрын
Yes, you're right, I think that's the better play. In the moment I was imagining what if they let the Commando die and then play two small creatures which would still be protected by the enchantment, but that is clearly over-thinking the situation. Better just to deny them the Maps. Good call!

I love robbery if i ever get to play. It feels like a "win more" card. I cant remember it ever getting me out of a jam. That said, this deck was fun.
@BullingdonMTG
@BullingdonMTG 9 ай бұрын
Ah, it's gotten me out of jams countless times. A big Robbery can even build a board and hold off an aggro deck with their own creatures. And against control, if it resolves, it can make them scoop unlike any other finisher in the game, regardless of what you get. One thing that has taken practice for me, and might help it feel less like a "win more" card, is to not be too precious with them. My instinct originally was to hold on to them forever, dreaming of gigantic Robberies, but I've found it's often the right play to just Rob for 2 or 3 on early turns if you get the chance, and that has improved my performance with it. Glad you liked the deck at least -- thanks for the comment!

Haha, I was tempted now that I know about your (totally wrong and incorrect) feelings about hand sorting! But truly it's nothing personal -- that comment (naturally!) comes up a _lot_ whenever I play this deck, but the explanation is too long to really fit within the video. So since I remembered your comment I thought that was a fun way to tee my lengthy footnote.

I suppose by the time mindsplice has gotten to 5, you’re already far enough ahead that draw 2 for 2 is just fine

Using a variation of this deck, I just did a robbery for 15, which pulled a slick shot show off and bunch of pumps, swung on the next turn with a flying 21/6 OTK
@BullingdonMTG
@BullingdonMTG 9 ай бұрын
Awesome! And that's exactly why I think Robbery is such a game changer. Typical "steal your stuff" effects grab one or two cards (Siphon Insight, Decadent Dragon, etc). And against aggro, any one card is completely useless (Ok, I spent a card and mana and all I got was a Vampire Epicure). But when you are getting 3-4-5-6+ cards, then you start being able to take advantage of all the synergies that make their deck so strong. Completely different, more powerful effect.

why not silver scrutiny over Deluge, also how are you agaist other control decks like jace mill with Disapate. Do you think that the new counterspell should completely replace syncopate or could they both be used
@BullingdonMTG
@BullingdonMTG 9 ай бұрын
Silver Scrutiny is certainly amazing when you have Mindsplice going, but but I find it underwhelming when you don't have one. And for me, I optimize the card choices for how good they are when you don't have the Mindsplice, since when you do have one, most cards are good enough. And when you don't have a 'Splice, Deluge is just _SO_ much better than Scrutiny that it's not even close. This deck is quite good against other control decks. We can play almost completely at instant speed (Mindpslice, Robbery, Deluge), so the trick is to get your timing right and hit them with a big Robbery when they tap out for their own Deluge or Emperor or whatever. I feel like 4 is the right amount of counters, and I think 3 Steps is way better than Syncopate. It's true you lose the exile effect, but the additional modes on 3 Steps more than make up for it. Plus if you don't have Mindsplice, it's a hard counter for 3, which I prefer to a conditional one. And if you do have Mindsplice, 3 Steps turns into Counterspell, and Syncopate _can_ still miss (not to mention the other modes, like duplicating your Mindsplice). If you want to go up to 5-6 counters, Syncopate is certainly a decent option, though I'd also consider No More Lies or Negate.

game 1 you had 9 mana to transform etali and win outright. I mean not that it's hard to beat a 120 card pile but still.
@BullingdonMTG
@BullingdonMTG 9 ай бұрын
I did consider that in the moment, but I was worried about removal (they were tapped out but had Treasure available). I think you're right though, I probably should have gone for it (I do tend to be overly-cautious in general as a player). And that 120 card pile put up quite a fight! There were a couple of places where I was dreading the potential embarrassment of losing to such a deck. I would have loved to face them the other 9 out of 10 times when it doesn't all fall perfectly together for them.

@@BullingdonMTG it's that you spoil upcoming plays, rather than letting them play out and letting the viewers play along and decide their actions which makes the videos much less entertaining.

@RC0926 Oh, that's very interesting. Thank you for elaborating. Other than "Stay tuned" teaser kind of stuff at the beginning, I do try to only post thought bubbles as commentary after something has happened so as not to spoil anything in the moment (though I'm sure timing has been off a few times). Wouldn't voice commentary have a similar problem of spoiling your ability to play along though? Or is it that you can mute voice commentary but can't mute the bubbles?
