This is nothing new and not limited to ESPN. I have seen countless players ranked as 4 Stars and they commit to Louisville and suddenly drop to 3 star at the next eval. Similarly, I have seen plenty of 3 stars suddenly get bumped to 4 as soon as they commit to a traditional power.

Prime even joked about players committing to CU ratings suddenly see their ratings dropped. This what sites like ON3 and ESPN likes to do. When a big recruit is about to comment, they will start running stories about Prime leaving CU, or suddenly drop their ratings a star or 2. I've noticed they've dropped their height weight as well. Juju would go from 6-1 to 6 foot, Cardi Smith went from 6'6 1/2 to 6'5. They will talk about Prime's longevity at CU. Will he follow his sons? Is CU the right place for Prime? If the FSU job opens up, Prime will be out there. Oh, Prime left JSU after complaining about players not giving HBCU teams a chance. Prime did, but the JSU was about their administration playing with the money.

This has happened for quite a while. There have always been politics and egos involved. In the end, it probably affects coaching contracts more than anything (unless your coaches don't actually evaluate and just go off of 3rd party ratings). Everyone likes to get 4 or 5 star recruits, but some of the best players to ever play weren't that. Zack Thomas, Wes Welker, Patrick Mahomes at TTU were just 3 star recruits out of high school. Cam Skattebo from ASU was a 0 star if I recall (he may not be a big NFL success (time will tell), but he is a tremendous cfb player). There are tons of others, but those are schools I follow because I went there.

Agreed. This effects rankings, playoff, bonuses, etc. I don't think there is a science to it. Some coaches have contract incentives for recruit rankings. It was convenient for USC when JuJu Lewis' dropped from a 5S to a 4S right before he decommitted. He's dominated at the highest level in GA for 3 years. Bryce Underwood hasn't had the HS career JJL has, but he's a 5S. He's taller? Really? It's a problem worthy of "Pre-litigation" efforts to see if the B12 has a case.

This is a losing battle because no matter how you slice it the rankings will never be truly accurate. But they could be more consistent. If you produce at an all Conference level you should atleast be a 4 star( .90 ovr) by 247 rankings. And if you were a 4 or 5 star out of highschool and don’t play much like Vickers you have to drop to a 3 star cause you haven’t played football in 2 or 3 years so it’s only right. A guy like Nik Hill Green should be closer to that .92 range and one of the Top 20 to 30 players overall in the portal for the season he had. The Oregon Safety Theineman was slighted to. He’s currently the 60th best player in the portal according to 247 at .90 but he’s closer to a .95 and a Top 5 player overall. I could make a case for him to be a 5 star in the portal. So it’s not just Colorado they just aren’t consistent overall

There are few things that needs to be changed with 1) transfer portal: should only be in spring and you should only be able to use it once 2) there needs to be a limit (cap) on how much only can make on NIL. 3) congress has to step in a make laws for this
