I still believe Secretariat was the greatest racehorse to ever live. He set records at all 3 races that still stand, and his time at the Belmont remains the world record time for the mile and a half distance. However, I would argue American Pharoah's competition was tougher. There are more horses and better horses than there were back then. Tactics are different as well. Horses that lose the Derby usually skip the Preakness and are better rested in the Belmont. Back then, most contenders ran all three. Winning the Triple Crown has always been hard, but modern horseracing has made it darn near impossible. And somehow Pharoah did it.

When I was a kid, my family owned several horses and one of them was an off the track thoroughbred gelding. His full name was overly complicated and started with the word "Conglomerate" so we shortened it to "Comet". Anyway he was a real gentleman and had a strong work ethic, so much so that my mother, who used to be a horse trainer, was able to harness break him.

My Favorite Racehorses 1. Rock Hard Ten 2. Free House 3. Soul Of The Matter 4. Lit de Justice 5. Zenyatta 6. Justify 7. Cigar 8. Ghostzapper 9. Lava Man 10. Silver Charm My favorite racehorse before my time is Seattle Slew. It used to be Secretariat but Slew was a bad dude. I like tough horses. Sec was brilliant but wasn't gritty enough. The G.O.A.T. might actually be Dr. Fager or Spectacular Bid. A 4YO Fager had the most raw talent. Rock Hard Ten will always be my favorite racehorse. I met him, wore his hat, had his Santa Anita Derby button, t-shirt, followed him since his 2nd start, and just made me money consistently. If you're reading this, Ernie Moody, you're a kind man. Much love to you, Gary Stevens, and Richard Mandella. The 2005 Santa Anita Handicap was my favorite race I ever attended even moreso than Zenyatta's 2009 Breeders' Cup Classic win. The Jason Orman era with RHT were kinda so-so since Orman was inexperienced. The fastest racehorse I saw was Ghostzapper. I already knew he would win the 2004 BC Classic months before he ran in it. The first great racehorse I saw was Cigar who got me into the sport. My favorite mare was easily Zenyatta and I really don't care for fillies and mares. My favorite Triple Crown winner is Justify. My favorite Cal-breds are Free House, Lava Man, and California Chrome. I used to have a shit load of horse racing memorabilia. But the only ones I have now are downloaded KZbin races on my phones. Favorite Horse Races I Saw Live 1. 2005 Santa Anita Handicap 2. 2009 Breeders' Cup Classic 3. 2005 Hollywood Gold Cup Pretty much all the races I saw Rock Hard Ten and Zenyatta in person, my 17h beasts. Big Ten was like 17.3 hands. Zen was like 17.2. They're taller than Justify and Secretariat. My Favorite Horses To Rewatch 1. 1996 Dubai World Cup 2. 1996 Kentucky Derby 3. 1973 Belmont Stakes

Baffert's best horse was American Pharaoh but his most talented was a horse who didn't even win Horse of the Year.. Arrogate.
@emmabesko41244 жыл бұрын
Jason Reyes Arrogate is a grey horse famous for defeating California Chrome in the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Classic as well as defeating 2017 HOTY Gun Runner in the Dubai World Cup coming from behind in 2016. He retired in 2017 to stud. His first crop of foals will be racing in 2021.
@OfficialMuffiin4 жыл бұрын
Arrogate was rated as Longines Worlds Best Racehorse, that's a bigger achievement than HOTY. Although Arrogate definitely deserved that title too.
@marysueeasteregg4 жыл бұрын
@Jason Reyes Arrogate's streak of four brilliant Grade 1 stakes wins (the Travers & Breeders' Cup Classic in 2016, the Pegasus World Cup & Dubai World Cup in 2017) -- two of them in track record time, all of them beating out a Horse of the Year winner, with the races won in very different styles (setting the pace, stalking, and closing from dead last) -- made me wonder if I was looking at a horse as good as Secretariat. The only other horse who has made me wonder that was Spectacular Bid. The tail end of Arrogate's career made me reevaluate that opinion a bit -- he lost three races in a row at Del Mar, two of them out of the money. He was sound. Did he hate Del Mar, as Baffert believes? Was he just soured on racing? But at his best . . . *WOW*. He retired with a career record of 11:7-1-1. Tragically, Arrogate died June 2, 2020, at the age of 7, while finishing his third season at stud. His first crop are currently yearlings. He fell in his stall and was unable to get to his feet. He was transported to an equine hospital, where 4 days of tests & treatment did not reveal the cause or remedy the problem. He developed a complication -- it is dangerous for horses to be lying down for extended times -- and was euthanized. If the results of the necropsy have been released, I haven't seen it. (Years ago, a necropsy failed to reveal the cause of death of my friends' beloved middle-aged Thoroughbred gelding, who died under similar conditions, having been found down in the field, unable to rise to his feet.)
@marysueeasteregg4 жыл бұрын
@@OfficialMuffiin Horse of the Year and the Longines rankings are evaluated very differently. HOY is normally given for excellence over the season. Longines revises its rankings several times over the course of the year, and the final rankings are specifically on *peak performance* by a racehorse, with the specific race cited for the award. By that criteria, Arrogate deserved the 2016 Longines award as World's Best Racehorse (given for his Breeders Cup Classic win) and his 2017 Longines award (for his win in the Dubai World Cup). Arrogate was, as I say elsewhere in this thread, one of only two horses who have made me wonder if I was looking at a dirt runner as good as Secretariat. At his best, he was jaw droppingly brilliant. But Arrogate did not deserve HOY in either 2016 or 2017. In 2016, Arrogate's record was 6:5-0-1. Only two of his wins were stakes wins, brilliant victories in the G1 Travers and Breeders' Cup Classic. His other 4 starts were in maiden specials and allowance races. California Chrome, whom he beat in the Classic, was 8:7-1-0 for the season, his sole loss being a neck loss to Arrogate in the Classic. Chrome had 3 G1 wins, 2 GII wins, and victories in a handicap and a listed (I assume ungraded) stakes that year. He deserved HOY. Not Arrogate. I was no Chromie, btw. Couldn't stand Steve Coburn. I was much more a fan of Arrogate. Similar situation in 2017. Arrogate was 5:2-1-0 that season, with brilliant wins in the G1 Pegasus World Cup and Dubai World Cup early in the year. But he finished out the year with 3 straight losses, 2 of them out of the money. Gun Runner, whom Arrogate beat in Dubai, was 6:5-1-0 that year. Gun Runner's sole loss in 2017 was that 2nd to Arrogate in Dubai in March, which was followed by 4 straight wins in G1 races. GR's other win was a GIII early in the year. More stakes wins, much stronger finish to the year. Gun Runner deserved the HOY award.
@OfficialMuffiin4 жыл бұрын

Why is horse racing a thing?! Did you know that almost 30,000 horses die EVERY year because of the beatings and harsh bits, spurrs, and pushing horses through their limit causing their legs to break, and it is HORRIFIC. people obviously don’t know that the people only do it for the money, and that race horses start training MONTHS after birth, with damages the horses health, which is why most people sell their race horses because of bad health. Shame on you. Shame on all the race industry supporters and jockeys. Also, after they win a “Million dollar race”, they just sell the horses or send them to slaughter because they are called “worthless”.
