Woody was preaching. Coaching is not about finding the right QB for your system, coaching is developing your system to the players you have. This is why so many QBs are thrown away.
@hotohori698 ай бұрын
The problem is most professional coaches are stubborn control freaks with giant egos. They are convinced their system is the best and no one can convince them otherwise. They look at capitulating to a player and adjusting as weakness. Its why all the old college coaches are quitting cause they can't handle the players having any power at all with them transferring if the coach they are playing for doesn't work for them.

I'm way late to this party, but thank you Dan Orlovsky! You're dead on about Mac Jones! At the very least, he was ruined by mishandling, and at most, potentially ruined purposely by a vindictive HC. IMO, Belichick is a hypocrite. Belichick expects EVERYONE ELSE to be accountable and team driven so, WHY ISN'T HE??!! I put the blame squarely on COACHING for the decline of Mac. Let's not forget Mac's success the first season: Made Playoffs @ 10-7 and pro-bowl alternate: That doesn't happen by accident in the NFL! Next season he loses a great OC, replaced by a couple meathead yes men, with NO Offensive credibility!... Couple that with head scratching uncomplimentary offensive schemes and gameplans. Add the HC undermining Mac's confidence by benching him after ONE interception in a game! W*F!! What other coach would bench the starter after ONE interception early in a game??!! Answer: NONE!! 3rd year under "sink or swim" duress with another questionable meathead OC, more inexplicable schemes/gameplans, and an uncommunicative dis-engaged HC!! Recipe for failure ONLY! Was Mac Jones at all responsible for his decline? The answer is: MINIMALLY! Yes, he is high strung and impatient. Yes, he lost the team by calling out teammates for perceived failures. Yes he was guilty of being a young immature player who was understandably frustrated in dealing with an UNTENABLE situation!! I wish the best of success to Mac and my personal apology. I am embarrassed by what my team did to him. He should have had a 4th Pats year with a legit chance to thrive… It's pretty clear now that Belichick is a brilliant Narcissist. He's the best defensive mind the game has ever seen, but he has NO respect for offense and offensive players, and NO respect for the Owner that employs him. He has repeatedly undermined what was best for the team while claiming otherwise. Sitting Malcolm Butler in SB 52 threw ALL Players under the Bus! How was that best for the TEAM! It's the HC duty to CREATE an atmosphere of success for the chosen QB! Ruining the starting QB consciously or unconsciously because he wasn't "your guy" is Textbook NARCISSISM! Belichick may have cut his football teeth under Navy Athletics, and he may THINK he runs a team modeled on the military way, but he FORGOT that EVERY serviceman swears an oath and is accountable to a higher authority. The Admiral or General, may not agree with or even respect The President, but it's their duty to their country to follow his orders and to NEVER undermine the MEN under their command. Belichick should never again be trusted with the HC position. He's borderline megalomaniacal, and a cancer in any position of authority. I would hire him as a DC with very minimal authority only. IMO, players were willing to endure the "Belichick Way" because TB12 ensured a legitimate SB shot year after year. Yes the defenses were equally important to the repeated success, but The GOAT was the GLUE that held it all together. When the glue dissolved, it unsurprisingly fell apart.

Mac also didn't make the defense choke against the Raiders 2 years in a row and force his teammates to stupidly fumble or drop the ball in crucial situations.

I think Mac going to SF would have been the easiest college to nfl transition. He would have a solid coach, loaded roster and a proven system that fits majority of the QBs Shannahan puts in it.

A dude like Mac has very limited place he can fit in. He’s immobile with no arm. At least when you see Purdy, he can scramble when he needs to. Mac can only check down or get int or sack

What I like about maye is he’s 21 has a great build and strong arm meaning he has time to sit for a year or two while we build around that and he can actually learn

As a Patriots fan I would be fully on board with Penix and that would be a perfect situation. They have nothing to lose at this point and might as well trade Bailey Zappe as well, put him in more of a position where he can succeed and become at minimum a high end backup.

Mac Jones ruined himself
@normandomino41407 ай бұрын
Yes they did. They gave him no weapons, a half behind defensive coordinator and especially trams coach to coach your offense. They ruined that man.
@markbartoszek85858 ай бұрын
As a Pats fan who has watched every game since Mac Jones was drafted, the Pats did not ruin him. The coaching had nothing to do with him making bad decision after bad decision. Whether it's throwing into triple coverage, or taking a sack that takes them out of field goal range, Mac Jones has only himself to blame. Was he put in the best situation? No, but there were things he could've done to give his team a chance to win, and he blew it every time. I'm glad he's gone, and I'll be shocked if he ever gets another starting gig in the league.
@Scott_Dunbar_II8 ай бұрын
Before the Patricia/Judge experiment even started, Belichick literally told everyone to "blame him" if it would go badly, and it did. I feel like that takes away a majority of the blame Mac gets by default.

What did the Bears do to Justin Fields? The Bears did far worse by him. But, no analyst is saying that. Why??? NO team wanted Justin and none of them are questioned for passing up on him, but now he should be starter in Pittsburg, because he is a top talent in the NFL. We know biases is used for clicks, but its being taking to far by those that know football. Stay honest and more people will get it and as a society we will be better. But for now there is an audience that knows better, could you just cater to them/us a little more.

Drafting a QB is a crapshoot is only partially correct Drafting a pure pocket passer QB with no running ability is crapshoot. The only way running QB's have failed is if 1. They got injured (RG3, Anthony Richardson (for now)) 2. The had the opportunity to draft a arguably a better prospect (Fields) Cam, Lamar Jackson, Hurts, Kyler Murray all stayed with their teams for a second contract. Only pure pocket passers blow up in you face (Zack Wilson, Mac Jones, Trubisky)
@ald72488 ай бұрын
Running QBs are *much* more likely to get hurt and have shorter careers (Cam only just made it to his 2nd contract before declining). With the exception of a couple guys (e.g. prime Russell Wilson) the Pocket Passers are the elite QBs. Higher-risk, but higher-ceiling.
@ScottB-d8b8 ай бұрын
here is what this means: Jones will become starting QB and the Jags can go back to being at the bottom of the junk pile…Bright side? T Lawrence cannFINALLY go to a team that will become winners!
@christopherriley93728 ай бұрын
Why not bring Fields to Baltimore? He's skillfully made for what Lamar has proven works for the Ravens offensively. Plus the change of pace when you have to rest your starting quarterback is a young man who can make plays with his feet and possibly learn how to make plays with his arm like Lamar has grown into.

@Prettyfresh208 ай бұрын
The best option for fields would be to sit behind lamar jackson and learn from him. And he would be a viable option better than the guy they got from the patriots if something like an injury happens to lamar in the regular season. But the bears would have to take a lot of that contract and a low pick if they want fields off of their hands.
@RobertBallz8 ай бұрын
It’s going to be pointless for a lot of teams to trade for him. Fields will be looking to get paid.
