@@TheFootballDigest Honest Question: how many QB in the league right now can and WOULD do these adjustments at the LoS? THere are plenty of people that say Goff should NOT be in the MVP conversation due to his stats.
@mattthomas144213 күн бұрын
Yup, that's why stats like QBR and PFF grades underrate him cause they don't take into account pre snap reads(as far as I know atleast). Goff has said himself he beats you at the line of scrimmage, so all these "easy" throws that the advance metrics don't give him credit for wouldn't be so easy in a lesser QBs hands. He's the one that will make the pre snap audible depending on the defense, he's the one that identifies where the defenders are going to be and throw to that spot, he's the one that throws with anticipation instead of waiting. Doing those things leads to throwing to open receivers.

Lions fan here. Thanks for pointing out Jared Goff’s most valuable assets; vision and recognition. I could throw in his accuracy too, but I think his ability to get the Lions into the best play for success is the absolute key to why their offence is so good. Yeah, I know they also have a plethora of weapons who are ideally suited to their philosophy and an O Line that can absolutely steamroll defences in the run game, but Goff shows week after week that an NFL QB’s ability to read, understand, and execute is far more important than creativity, physicality, and mobility.

Not many QBs can throw it to a spot in space in which the receiver is still running a different line and not looking at the ball, confident that these receivers are smart enough and trusting enough that they can cut and look and the ball is on their numbers in less than 2 seconds... time after time. Rarely do the receivers have to reach for the ball, but they're all good receivers just in case, so solid as can be. Anticipation and trust goes a long way to make defending these routes next to impossible and requires supreme skill.

That's why if you watch Goff's incomplete pass, it is usually when he and the receiver are not on the same page. And it is few and far between. Goff doesn't have the biggest arm. His spiral is not the tightest. He doesn't do no look or side arm. His zip ball is so-so. He is not athletic at all compared to most modern QBs. His throwing motion is alright at best for an NFL QB. But one thing he has that not every QB can even understand is anticipation. And he exploited it to the max.

I am very happy and grateful that the dull and disappointing days of the Lion's past is gone! They are so exciting to watch and they never let up during the entire game! Awesome! Like my old coach said, "When you got them down, beat them like killing a fly with a shovel, and then you can be gentlemen afterwards!"

I’m glad to see some respect on Jared Goff’s name. Ben Johnson can write all the schemes he wants, but they’re just drawings on paper without the right guy to execute. Goff EARNED his spot as Detroit’s starting qb and I don’t think anyone would have it any other way.

Honestly, teams simply cannot make any mistakes against the Lions if they want the score to even be remotely close enough to possibly pull an upset. Goff struggled through the first 2 1/2 games of the year. But he hasn’t thrown a pick since week 3 (the first game in the Lions’ current streak). And the Goff/St. Brown connection needs to be its own video. Amon-Ra St. Brown isn’t the fastest WR (that’d be teammate Jamison Williams), and he’s not the tallest, but he literally always seems to be open. Teams honestly struggle to cover the guy. Double him? Umm… sure? But then that leaves Jamison Williams wide open for a deep ball. Plus, half the time on supposed passing downs, the Lions’ll get a big gain on a run. From either back.

I have suffered decades of mediocrity with this team. I bought season tickets after watching Hard Knocks, since I truly believed we were at the precipice of something special. I attended both home playoff games with my family last year and it was as awesome as I thought it would be. My only sad thought about all of this is that my Mom, Aunts and Uncles who loved the Lions like I did never got to see them like this. Football is King in my house and I am glad my two sons have a team to route for after having nothing but pain and suffering for most of their lives. This is the year we end the Super Bowl drought. Go Lions!

For those of you not watching every play of every Lions game: The reason why teams have much higher stats is because they are playing from behind all game. The Lions barely need to try, and can seemingly turn it on at will. This is what the best offensive line in football looks like, and I don't know if it is particularly close. That, along with a playmaker (or two) at every skill position. Defense is a bit of a "bend don't break" style. You might get a field goal that takes 6 or 7 minutes off the clock, but the Leos are scoring a touchdown on the next drive. I am a lifelong fan from Barry's early years until now, and I have never seen a Lions team even close to this. Thanks for the love from all us Detroiters, dude.

This team, after a rough week 2 loss at home vs a good Tampa Bay team (now unfortunately without Evans and Godwin), has been the football definition of a well-oiled machine. The NFC Playoffs will run through Detroit and they will make it to the Superbowl and probably win it all, against the Chiefs in my opinion. Those two teams are on a mid-February collision course. Ben Johnson has completely befuddled defenses and it's been a while since a team has impressed me as much as this lions team. When this season is over, we could be talking about one of the all-time great teams American sports has ever seen, not just football.

SOL is the answer. They always find a way to beat themselves. ALWAYS. Last year everyone was saying SOL was dead, then they bounce a ball off Vildor's facemask into the hands of the opposing WR in the NFC championship game, and find a way to diarrhea a massive lead away and lose. SOL never dies. NEVER DIES.
@onmywayup9411 күн бұрын
thats silly. So anytime they don't win a superbowl you can cry SOL? They're 23-7 in their last 30 games. Enjoy it and don't be miserable. Life's too short

Cause Option Offense schemes are mainly used in Highschool and College. It is rarely used in the NFL because they require a lot of moving parts to be able to be ready on all plays to touch the ball. Most teams aren't used to defending this style of football on almost EVERY play as it is an exhausting style of offense to match by the defense.

The defense is the unsung hero, even post-Hutch injury. I don't think Anzalone has missed a solo tackle in like a month. Red zone defense was definitely key in this game. When all is said and done, Goff to St. Brown may be remembered as one of the great passing connections of all time

Even if there are haters the Lions franchise situation with their roster building and coaching staff are enviable. Especially with many other bad teams fraught with instability, fraudulence and wasted potential. Any fan of good football can clearly see in the last 3 seasons how the Lions pursued and chased after excellence and are now reaping the benefits.

I grew up in Detroit and I was a rabid Lions and Tigers fan. As I traveled all over I always followed them. It has been a terrible experience until now. But the season is only half over and everyone will be aiming to bring them down. I can only pray that we don't blow it all. It would be better to go 4-13 than have this success and then fall out of first. It is still a long season to finish.

One of my favorite parts of about good Detroit sports teams is they are almost always about team above individual. That is incredibly hard to find in professional sports and the last time this happened with the Pistons in ‘04 the Shaq and Kobe lakers almost got swept. Hoping these Lions can do the same to the Chiefs this year
@TheBoardgameWarthog14 күн бұрын
I think lost in the offense and the defense is the special teams. Kalif Raymond is a great kick returner and those on the kick return team do a good job (ask the Titans about that). Jack Fox has an amazing leg that can flip the field so that if the Lions are backed up on say their own 10, the other team might start at their own 25 or 30 yard line. And it's a small sample size, but Jake Bates has had a better year than expected.

I’ve been on this planet for almost 26 years and, like most Lions fans, have known nothing but mediocrity from this team ever since I started watching/following sports back in 2011/12. Between the Tigers odd defying playoff run & the Lions establishing themselves as an NFC powerhouse, its an exciting time for Detroit sports again! Just wish that my grandfathers were still here to witness it EDIT: 30 comps to Amon-Ra!? I don’t think Stafford ever posted numbers like that with Megatron!

A team can get 1000 yds in a game, but if they turn the ball over every time they are set to score, it means nothing. All that matters is putting points on the board and the Lions are REALLY good at doing that.
