I don't think it matters as much with the new playoff format. But before it mattered because you had teams who were ranked above ND. Then they lost their conference championship while ND didn't play at all, and then ND jumped them into the playoffs while the team that played a game got kicked out.

I don’t understand the conference argument. Literally everyone said at the beginning of the season this new format will force ND to join a conference because they can’t be seeded higher then the 5 seed. They are given the 7 seed and beat everyone they are matched up against and now all of a sudden them not being in a conference is unfair to everyone else. Pick a lane being in a conference isn’t mandatory the reason no other schools do it is because no other schools can stand on their own notre dame is the only one that can.

Now almost 100 years later, why would they join? Every team that won their quarter final game got $14 million. Penn State, OSU, and Texas had to distribute that money to every member of their conference. Notre Dame got to keep all $14 million. Now that they won their semi-final game, they get to keep all $20 million. And, what other team has a guaranteed national game every week? ND's deal with NBC either gives them NBC as a channel or Peacock. And, because they don't have to play a conference championship game, that's a point for them as they don't have an opportunity to lose which the CFP committee will almost never shut out a highly ranked ND due to a Conference Champ. There is no reason for their football team to go to a conference because they benefit from being out of one.

Wins and losses of opponents don’t matter if the teams you’re playing are weaker teams playing in weaker conferences. That’s the issue. Team A can play the best of the best in the G5. Doesn’t mean they are a better team than Team B with the same record in ACC play. Team B’s opponents may have worse records than Team A’s opponents but their competition was stiffer and they are better teams. Week 14 SOS has Texas ranked 15 and ND ranked 57. It was what it was. Doesn’t mean ND doesn’t deserve to be here or that they should join a conference. Things were a lot more interesting when we had more independents, frankly.

Freeman deserves a ton of credit. With all the injuries ND has suffered this season, it is basically amazing they are still standing in the end. The OL and the DL have been fundamentally decimated. And then in the PSU game, on top of all the other losses, they lost 2 OLs as the game went on. Many teams would have just folded. Also, consider the loss of their best player, .. Benjamin Morrison ... which could have been a death stroke. But a true freshman (and for the recruitniks out there, a consensus 3* player) stepped up and held the line. This team is built on grit, courage, character, and a complete commitment to the "next man in" philosophy. They might not beat OSU or Texas in the final game, but they should have earned everyone's respect.

Their independence can also be their strength some years. Especially when USC is good, when Stanford is good, or when Michigan is good (even though they don't play as much anymore). That and the fact that schools basically line up to play them in the regular season. I mean I remember years back getting a notification saying that Notre Dame and Texas A&M would be playing these past 2 years. I got that message 6 years prior. Schools want to play Notre Dame. They know that Notre Dame attracts attention and the ratings will be good.

Notre Dame has beaten 5 ACC team, 4 Big 10 team, 2 SEC teams, Notre Dame doesn't need to join a conference. They do as much as any team in a conference without having to share money with the conference.
