Correction to We Are chant history. The 1947 Penn State Football Team: The most widely recognized origin story of the "We Are" chant is connected to the 1947 Penn State football team. That year, the team was scheduled to play the University of Miami in the Orange Bowl. At that time, racial segregation was still prevalent in the southern United States, and the University of Miami refused to play against Penn State if they included their two African American players, Wally Triplett and Dennie Hoggard. In response, Penn State's team voted to refuse the invitation if their black players couldn't participate. This decision demonstrated unity and support for their teammates and set a powerful example. The chant "We Are Penn State" is said to have emerged from this spirit of unity. The chant was not formed by some cheerleaders in the 70's.

and the story may be even a bit better, according to what I am familiar with. The PSU team arrived at their hotel in Miami, and the hotel manager told them that the blacks could not stay there, that the reservation was only for the Penn State team. The captain of the team pointed to all of the players, black and white, and declared, "We are Penn State !"

Joe Pa reported the allegations to 3 different law enforcement agencies. This is documented in public law court records. This is more slander by espn and a lacking of research and reporting.

I'm a PSU grade but stop trying to relitigate the past. The bottom line is that the most unspeakable things happened to defenseless children and everyone in leadership failed them whether it was intentional or not. Our priorities as humans should always be with protecting children and not players and coaches. The more and more PSU fans try to claim a media conspiracy, the harder it is to atone for what happened and easier it is for even non-college football fans to hate the university believing our priorities to be out of wack. It's so easy to simply say, "That was a dark chapter in PSU's history. Hopefully, we have all learned from it and will be vigilant that it never happens again. And we support PSU in being a leader in protecting children going forward." Is that hard to do?

@@heartbreak25 No Penn Stater supports Sandusky. And the university has done more for children’s and their families well-being than the majority of higher educational institutions through THON and medical research and treatment. 1 man’s actions doesn’t change that and can’t undue that. And millions are heroically responsible for that life changing impact. Myself included. Still a proud THON and Hope Gala member. Aside from that, me bringing light to a false narrative doesn’t down grade or disregard the evil of what it stems from. No Penn Stater supports the actions of Sandusky, but hundreds of thousands were blamed, ridiculed and defamed, taking that much more attention away from the victims sadly, and the psychopath who hurt them. There’s many sides to the incident as a whole unfortunately, whether you as a Penn State grad, acknowledges that or not.

@@heartbreak25what year did you graduate? I'm one myself. There's so much more to the story you don't know. Look up John Ziegler's podcast with benefit of hindsight. Also Graham Spanier made a 500 page book about it, idk how I feel about him but I'm sure he wouldn't have wasted his time writing a 500 page book if he knew more.

Slender or not, let's move on. What happened has happened. At this point, no one cares about what Paterno said or what Spanier said. The more we argue about this, the more it makes us Penn State family look like we care more about personal reputation then the lessons learned from the actual crimes. It is what it is. Time to move on Penn State family!

Get the facts straight! It’s been proven that Joe did, in fact, report what he was told. Promoting this fiction is preposterous and wrong!
