Back in the day, the University of Texas liked to refer to themselves as "The University." This was a dig at the Aggies, whose school was not a university. Until 1963, Texas A&M was (officially, by name) just a college. But they taught the Aggies some grammar at this college, and the cadets understood that "The University" was not a proper name. So, if the Longhorns wanted to call themselves "the university" that's fine, but it should be written in lower-case letters; and the abbreviation for that isn't U.T., it's t.u. That's where "t.u." comes from!

My dad’s class ring said College instead of University like mine. Great point. Also that Bevo was named,Ed that bc instead of sawing his horns off(literally) they branded him 13-0 bc that was the score. Hence B EV O

So, it doesn't have to capitalized, because if you talk about "the university", at the time there was only one, A&M was a college.

@@stischer47 That's what made it a dig on the Aggies when the Longhorns called themselves "the university." It doesn't have to be capitalized -- and it would be improper to capitalize it -- BECAUSE those are the rules of the English language. Okay... It's kinda petty, but it was just the Aggies' way of turning a Longhorn insult back on them. They never really understood it. You will still hear Longhorns complaining that the Aggies inverted U.T., and that they're being disrespectful by not capitalizing the initial for the State of Texas. Oh well... There are some kinds of stupid that just can't be fixed. But, to be more charitable, most Aggies don't know exactly where the "t.u." moniker came from either. I posted my comment because in my view this video (created by an Aggie) didn't get it entirely right.

@@theNfl_Esq My dad was at Texas A&M in 1963 when it switched, so he had the option of choosing "College" or "Univsersity" on his class ring. He chose the latter.

@@ericmatthaei9711 same but he chose College lol. Back then it was a split decision from what I was told. I never actually looked into it. Unfortunately he passed away last year from Agent Orange (or I’d ask him) which caused dementia and cancer. So in a way was also a casualty of Nam. 28 years sooner than his dad.

A lot of the traditions began when A&M was an ag college with a train stop on the railroad between Houston and Dallas (they would load onto the train to go to dances in Denton held by Texas Women's University), reinforced by its isolation and military traditions. Even for those of us who are not Aggies, we understand their traditions. I get goosebumps upon hearing the trumpet call at the beginning of the Aggie War Hymn.
@chopkong11 ай бұрын
You forget to mention that for the first nearly 100 years, the school was a military school. During WWI, WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam War, much of their enrollment was enlisted for war. Also, A&M still places more officers into the military than any other school in the country.

@@opentile_minis8659 Forgive me. Perhaps “caused them” would have been more accurate. Although, they did kind of force their hand in making the decision, so…..tomato, tomAHto. And, how come all the longhorn fans dress up like Aggies instead of dressing like cows. What’s up with that, anyway?

The gesture Manziel gives after a touchdown was started by a teammate. The sign represents that scoring was their way of “cashing in” on all the hard work they had done during the offseason.
