One of the biggest reasons as to why Erling Haaland at times doesn’t get the respect that he deserves despite scoring goals game in game out is because we have never seen him at a major tournament. If he was at the EUROs this year or the World Cup 2 years ago and was scoring so many goals, the way we’d view him would be very different in a sense that he would be showing his worth on the biggest stage in international football and when it comes to the Ballon Dor race or discussing his legacy as a footballer, no matter what he does domestically unfortunately it’s the only thing that’s going to hold him back. Norway aren’t known for being a powerhouse in football, they have produced some good players over the years and while they’ve never qualified for a major tournament and that’s partly down to the fact that they’ve been drawn into those groups in qualifiers. They finished 3rd in the group for the EURO qualifying, the reason why Georgia qualified for the EUROs despite finishing 4th behind them was because them winning their group in the Nations League meant that they had to play a 2legged tie in the playoffs to qualify and they made it to the RD of 16 and we all saw how well other countries performed in that tournament: (Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey Austria etc), even Ukraine had 4 points and didn’t even get out of their group. We’ve seen the likes of Gareth Bale and Robert Lewandowski carry their respective national teams to major tournaments whether it was the World Cup or the EUROs, Bale carried to a semifinal finish at the EUROs, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia took Georgia to their first ever major tournament meaning that Haaland very soon doesn’t have any excuses especially when he’s playing on a country that has some good players alongside him in attack. He’s one of the best strikers in the world and he’s a potential Ballon Dor winner, Martin Odegaard is one of the best midfielders in the world and Arsenal fans will tell you that he’s world class, Oscar Bobb his teammate at Manchester City is a rising star, Alexander Sorloth had the 2nd most goals in La Liga last season for Villarreal which saw him earn a move to Atletico Madrid where he scored on his debut for them against his former club. The collective team that Norway have isn’t strong enough, imagine having 2 of the best players in the premier league on teams competing for the title and yet can’t even quality for a major tournament and seeing how other countries did at the EUROs means that they don’t have any excuses if they don’t qualify for the World Cup in 2026 depending on how favorable/tough their qualifying group is.
