Great interview. As a retired player I would say that hockey, more than any other sport, is about the team and not the individual. Players never say "I" they always say "we" in interviews. That is a culture that is important and why hockey does not have a Deon type character.

@@SaskTransfer exactly. I appreciate that I can turn on a hockey game and it's just a hockey game. The guys are so talented, it's such a good league that you don't need all the other stuff. IIHF and NHL coming together bringing WC and alternate it with the Olympics with the best players would be the best thing for the sport. The most popular team sports in the US are too US-centric. Ice hockey needs to reach other nations and the NHL's approach is killing the growth of the game.

The counting of Michigan goals is absolute BS! It is a "LaCrosse" style goal, which is not a hockey shot. We have disallowed "Soccer" style goals...you cannot kick the puck in. As well, "Baseball" style goals either because you can't close your hand on the puck and throw it. END OF STORY! NOT A HOCKEY GOAL!!!
@randallrhoads32718 ай бұрын
i get a kick of these hockey guys still trying to bs people by saying the skill of todays game is better than ever...when its not even close to the 80's or early 90's. The game is played so robotic and stupid now...all the teams look and play exactly the same way. Its a boring mess....games go long stretches where nothing happens...just dump and chase. The crowds are dead quiet. Scoring chances simply dont happen. Most of the games are 2-1..3-2...or 4-3. The shots on goal are almost identical, usually in the upper 20's per game. All the goalies are identical and play the same way. They ruined a great game with these defensive "systems" starting in the mid 90's...now every team plays the same way. Gretzkys records have stood over 40 years now and there is simply no chance theyll ever get broken, and some should have been broken by now. Hull and Lemieux almost broke the goal record ..and that was in the late 80's! McDavid had ONE great season last year, and it was only the 15th best ever for a season...and was still almost 70 points from 99's record. Even the fighting was absolutely great in the 80's and 90's...some of the best ever and some matches almost as big as the game itself. The game today is just a boring mess with nameless faces and no creativity or superstars....again, they ruined their own sport.

Hardest trophy in all of sports to win huh? Thats proof that all you gotta do is play this garbage hockey and you can win it. They all play and look the same...and that just proves it. @@randallrhoads3271 Your understanding of the game is just garbage, turn on any clip from 80-90s and compare speed of the game and average skill, also goaltending is night and day. it's not even close, that's why margin for error is so thin. Vegas argument is also irrelevent, they got so many good players from other teams, you probably never heard about expansion rules. So yeah, you can be critical, but your logic is non existant.
@randallrhoads32718 ай бұрын
@@AntonyLP this is the only sport thats gone backwards in offense...you guys just cant accept it. Glad you brought up the goal tenders. Those today dont play the position, they dont make saves, they simply cover as much of the opening of the net and the puck simply just hits them. They are all 6"6", wear these ridiculous pads, and just simply drop to their knees. They NEVER see 40 or 50 shots a game, like before..most shots are just harmless. As for the speed of the game, these teams just roll 4 lines for a few seconds, skate out of control at times, and blow what ever scoring chances they do get. 90% of the players would be on the third checking line back in the 80's-90's. These teams today score at a rate from the 1950's....and this is after the league changed the rules to HELP THEM SCORE MORE!!. I still cant believe they now allow 2 and 3 line passes..they actually made cherry picking and "floating" legal when they took out the center red line. If Gretzky had these rules, hed have scored 1700 goals. They actually tried to slow down the Oilers by making up rules against them...they couldnt believe they were destroying their precious record book. You can smooth over the Vegas thing all you want...who ever heard of a first year expansion team almost winning the entire thing...and its because THEY ALL PLAY THE SAME WAY!!...JUST ADMIT IT. Theyve been doing this a good 20 years now...and they even coach this garbage at the bantam and pee wee level..and its shows now. Got a bunch of players that have no touch, no skill, no creativity. You got a few guys now that scored dipsy doo goals that only help themselves...you dont have players that make others around them great. The games now are simply robotic, carbon copies of each other. Most of the game, theres just alot of nothing going on...long stretches of zero QUALITY scoring chances...who ever gets the lucky bounces gets the chances. Its just a scrambled mess with no flow or momentem. iTS BECOME VERY MUCH LIKE SOCCER. Any new or casual fan to the game will look back its history and say "WTF HAPPENED"...why were all those records set 30- 40 years ago...those records should have been broken years ago...but the NHL decided to ruin its own game and now theyll NEVER be broken..thats just weird. For 85 years, hockey was progressing and evolving with its play and scoring, and did every decade until the 2000's, then it hit a brick wall. If you guys enjoy this stuff, fine, but its more of a cult sport than it ever was...btw, watch the 1987 Canada Cup..Canada vs USSR...greatest 3 games ever played...they way the game is supposed to be played....again, they ruined their own sport.
