Most people don't know this, but their nickname "Ole Miss" has ties to slavery. It is what slaves used to call the wife of their plantation owner. You can read it for yourself on page 168 of the book "The University of Mississippi: A Sesquicentennial History" and page 144 of "Ever is a long time: a journey into Mississippi's dark past, a memoir". Personally, I think it's pathetic that an institution of higher learning would still use such a name, and I do believe that it should be obsolete.
