Nice comprehensive look at these funnels! I just posted a video about the MHW-3BOMBER tools and I compared their funnel to the Normcore and Sworks Design. I really like the Sworks Design funnel but it's definitely on the more expensive side. I'm glad you pointed out how the funnels sit on the basket and that some leave a gap in the coffee, I have the same pet peeve and talked about that in my video as well!!!

I think the fact that the BH can neatly fit a dosing cup for inverted transfer of grounds shouldn't be underestimated 👍

I'm so glad that I have subscribed! Otherwise I would not have seen this video! You have included so many crucial points in this video that so many other reviews I have seen did not include. Love your thorough and critical analyses in a wide variety (or 54 mm narrow... Lol) of usages. Excellent video!

You really should try the SworksDesign dosing ring. By far the best I've ever used. Strong magnets, tall, and sits flush on the side so I can direct-dose from my DF64E.

Thanks Josh, my question is what height Normcore dosing ring is best for Breville Barista Pro? Also, what height for Breville Express? Thank you for the video
@AlternativeBrewing
@AlternativeBrewing Жыл бұрын
It's not going to work if you place it on the portafilter whilst dosing in to under the in-built grinder sadly. There is only one dosing ring that will work and it is a Breville part we do not stock yet.

The Flair58 dosing ring works great as well, similar to the normcore.

This is what I use. The flair 58's ring is basically the same. I do use normcore for pretty much everything else as far as puck prep goes though

Been using the Barista Hustle at home and the flair58 at work for at least a year now each. I'd say I prefer the BH one overall (look/feel/stronger magnets) however it is less of a funnel which is more of an important feature on bar with our workflow dosing directly into the Portafilter. So my two cents.. For home use with a dosing cup and then WDT the BH comes out on top for busy bar use dosing directly to the portafilter - the Flair and its acceptable magnets/better funnel come out on top.

Hi Josh, Great video. Thinking of buying a couple of normcores - one for my father who has the technical Profi IV and the eureka specialita and one for myself with the niche. Can you comment as to how the normcore would fit grinding from the specialita into the portafilter? The video seemed to show it being average to OK on the niche.
@AlternativeBrewing
@AlternativeBrewing Жыл бұрын
This should work so long as you're able to drop the portafilter rest down. I'd be more inclined to get the short just in case - rather than the tall for the specialita 🫶

Yeah I've bought a couple of cheap ones now and they sit inside the basket. Just sucks when the whole point for me is to help when needling the grounds, only to have to then redistribute the grounds after removing the ring. In fact, I got the worst channelling since I started with a bottomless basket and it was infuriating.

hello, I have a question, when we buying the coffee ring, there is writing size for example 51mm.. how we should choose the size? this 51mm is inside of portafilter? or how we should measure?
@AlternativeBrewing
@AlternativeBrewing 11 ай бұрын
51mm would be for the la pavoni machines. Most Machines will be either 58mm or 53.4mm portafilters - and is dictated by the size of the grouphead / portafilter.

Normcore leaves grinds all over the lip of my portafilter. Also, it's not tall enough. I want one with a thin inner lip. Any suggestions? 54mm
@AlternativeBrewing

I dont sorry no. 54mm is a tough one. 58mm I like the Barista Hustle as an option - but 54mm there's very limited option for Dosing rings

Hey I know this is somewhat of an old video but was actually looking at the Normcore dosing funnel as well. I noticed they have a tall version. Is it necessary to get the tall version or is their plenty of room with this one? For reference I have an Eureka Mignon Zero grinder and usually use the dosing cup instead of grinding directly in the portafilter. Thanks in advance!

how do you know what size dosing ring to buy? My group head is 52 mm so which size dosing ring is best?
@AlternativeBrewing
@AlternativeBrewing Жыл бұрын
Depends - 52mm, that's a tricky one! There's 51mm and 53.5mm - you may be able to go with the 53.5mm as there's usually an edge though there's nothing I've come across that fits 52mm exactly sorry! What machine is it?

Hi Josh, great video as usual! I'm new to a lot of the finer details in espresso though - have just been using my 'simple' SMEG (ECF01RDAU) 50's Retro Style. Having just bought from AB the complete Wacaco Nanopresso set up (GR and NS pods) I'm starting to want to up my game and looking at a suitable espresso hand grinder (for both home and Wacaco) and also wondered about a funnel, WDT tool etc. I can't find much info online or in the manual though for my SMEG on its basket size. I know it takes a 51mm tamper (I use a La Pavioni), but I can;t decide if it's 54mm, 58mm or it's own unique size. Measuring the filter basket that sits in the portafilter it is 51.5m internal diameter at the top and 61.5mm outside diameter - neither of which fills me with hope for a 54mm or 58mm funnel selection - unless I am missing something on how (where) they measure their quoted sizes. I'd be surprised if they (SMEG) don't use a standard size, but am willing to accept this may be the case. Any thoughts on a Funnel that could work with this home unit and also even the Nanopresso? I'm thinking of maybe a 1ZPresso K-Plus as a Hand Grinder (if you get them back in stock?) as a first to step up in my espresso game - but I want it for both home and the Wacaco - but no need for filter/ pour over or cold brews, just espresso, so happy to accept other recommendations for a hand grinder to suit. I know I need to upgrade from the SMEG for the home espresso unit, but it needs to breakdown first before senior management will allow a replacement upgrade yet! The other steps that will improve I can start with now - Wacaco for travel (done!), grinder, funnel etc. I can go ahead with them now for my current set ups 'under the radar' without setting too many new espresso machine alarm bells ;-) Any recommendations about suitable Grinder and Funnel greatly received! Thanks!

It looks like you have a Rancilio portafilter? I purchased the normcore dosing ring and the magnets don’t hold. Is that a known issue?

Not a necessary upgrade imo. Get a VST/precision professional basket to get the most out of your expensive grinder. You just get richer consistent espresso out. And go ridgeless if your stock one had a ridge. Its SO much better.

@1:43 And you can (obviously ;-) _not_ directly tamp through this dosing ring, after using you WDT… This awful idea of having an inner ring can only come from people who _never_ are testing/using their own design…

The Precision collar although advertised as stainless steel is really aluminum, mine has oxidised badly after it was put through a Cafetto cleaning cycle. All other true stainless steel parts come out as you would expect, nice and shiny clean the Precision collar did not fair well!. it IS cheap so I'm not really fussed however buyer beware.
