I think of essek as almost like Matt's PC for this campaign, I don't think he intended essek to be such a huge part of the campaign, but I'm glad he was, favorite side character by far

Clearly not…. When the Nein met Essek, he was lawful evil… the GROUP decided to make him a part… but yes… he is my favorite DMPC I’ve ever see

Matt said (in the wrap-up, I think) that he didn't expect them to latch on to him, but he liked playing essek whenever he popped in. And that just makes me happy :)

I adore Essek, I'd be interested to know if Matt thought he would be as important as he became. This lonely, hyper intelligent outcast who's primary focus was self-preservation and ego doing a slow 180 in the name of friendship and love. I hope Caleb and crew introduced him to Ussa and Alurra at some point. I'm picturing Essek, Ussa, Alurra and Caleb sitting around a table debating spell craft. What an odd group of mages to come together from 4 different countries.

Thanks so much for these. I revisit them from time to time. The Mighty Nein really were something special and the change they wrought on Essek was such a demonstration of Caduceus' speech to Trent; it's not pain that makes people, it's love that makes people. Essek is a great example of someone the Mighty Nein saved by their love. And in saving him from himself, they saved others from the future deeds he might have done.
