ESSENCE OF LIFE - Life Is So Unbelievably Precious. Make Every Day Count

Reflections of Life

It can be unpredictable and last only a few minutes, or you can see it coming from a distance. The thing about dying is that it’s not something you can negotiate. Whether you’re prepared or not, it’s going to happen, and on its own terms, too.
But what helps is making those last days count. They’re still with you. They haven’t gone yet. Make their last days comfortable. Be honest and talk about what’s to come. Nothing has to go unsaid because you have the opportunity to say it. Tell them you love them, and more importantly, show them.
Life is so unbelievably precious. Make every day count.
This film features Theunis Cilliers
Filmed in Franschhoek, South Africa
Theunis would like to thank the following people who have lifted him up onto their shoulders:
Carl, Godfried, Wilhelm, Liezl, Rina, Juan, Francois, Hester, John, David and Diana.
Also all the others who have helped to carry the baton in this relay of life.
And to Oom Jat van de Vyver, whose essence continues to live on.

In this age of some people shouting from the roof tops that all males are toxic I say this video illustrates what true masculinity is about; sacrifice, courage, humility, compassion, sensitivity, devotion, being a role model and above all else love of others. I am humbled by this man and can only hope that when I find myself in the same situation I can rise up to be as good as him.

I can barely breathe. Your film came in the middle of me rushing around in all my busyness, stopped me cold and stripped away all the non-essentials. This story...his words...his heart...his choices...the way you captured it...I can’t stop crying. You took what he entrusted you with and are giving it back to him as a gift which honors how holy and dignified this time in his life is. Thank you for sharing him with us. The way he is choosing to BE in the midst of such a heartbreaking time is deeply moving and inspiring. He is showing us how we can take the high road, to be our best selves and still be of service even though on the inside we want to collapse in a puddle. This film is going to bless and inspire so many people who are tempted to rage at life when it doesn’t go our way. I am getting up from my seat right now changed in a way which was needed. This may be my favorite film of yours yet (which is saying a lot!) GR - you are healing the world with your art. You are healing me. Thank you.

"Don't look forward in fear, don't look backward in regret, but look around in awareness" What a lovely humble man who loved his wife immensely. Through the heartbreak he suffered he kept every bit of her with him. And he left his essence with her in the coffin he carved for her. A love so pure and divine. Thank you GR,another meaningful video!

In December I lost my husband of 25+ years to COVID. Since then I've learned to cry every day because I feel so much better afterwards. Grief is so personal and because of this, that's when I feel alone the most. I reach out to friends and family and stay as busy as possible which has helped me tremendously. I have begun my journey with him in my heart and realizing that nothing is forever helps me let go of "things" both tangible and mentally......I'm finding peace in this new way of feeling.

@@Jeremy-4037 Hi Jeremy, what you said is so true. Personally when I cry is when I deeply feel emotions and then afterwards it's almost as if something has been reborn inside. Sorry for sounding deep or over the top but to really feel the emotion of a loss can be so beautiful and comforting. God Bless you.

His eyes showing the immense pain through his courage, his compassion through his grief...him thinking about how to help his wife during this most difficult phase. His love for her in making her the coffin, knowing that it would be her final resting place....how profound, how articulate and how humane. The hardest part of life is truly letting go of someone you love. We don't want to, but we are forced to say our goodbyes. All we could cherish is the last few steps we have with them, though we know clock is ticking and we can't slow it down. It's always easy to fall in love but never easy to say our goodbyes. I understand about the coffin. My mother died a few weeks ago from Covid. I asked to fix her hair and my sisters dressed her. It was a beautiful thing and like our last gift to her. I knew she would not want strangers to take care of her, so we chose not to embalm her. I feel that we gave her dignity even in death. Caring for our loved ones ourselves is also a helpful way to get some closure. To me it's like the flip side of a homebirth, if that makes sense...

The 'essence' - I treasure this whenever I share the moments with my mother who has Stage 4 colon cancer. Her presence, her little giggles when I say something funny, the small but useful advices she gives me...those things last moment to moment. But I can tell that she's beginning to lose her thoughts and understanding to some things that I say. That's a biological process, I understand and I go along with her, explaining if I have to. She's still my mother, but just not the mother who is at her prime anymore. However, her essence never left her and I keep bringing that back to our shared moments. Her consciousness seems to recognise that and that essence, will always be the mom that I had always known. Thank you Theunis and Green Renaissance.

We can't feel love until we accept ourselves unconditionally. We are love and complete but we don't know that because of our experiences growing up. When we love ourselves, we will not judge. Everything has the essence of mystery! Loved this video it's rawness held in the tranquility of music, scenery. Mum died five years ago Alziemers. Her last months she said nothing, head down constricted. Visits were painful, the silence deafening. One day as I was about to leave, she was mumbling, at first I was unable to decipher, she slowly lifted her head and smiled. Mum was a soldiers wife born from rough Glasgow stock. She uttered " My fucking arse is killing me" stunned I could only reply have you got piles Ma? Aye son, still smiling " Well I replied, I am not putting on the cream". Smiling she lowered her head, those were my mother's last words. I like to think that when the clouds of Alzheimer's broke up for a brief moment, she was letting me know nothing had changed, she was still there, not to worry, regret nothing. Painful as it was to watch her physical suffering, her true self shone through, she gave me the opportunity to offer patience, kindness, Love, just as this beautiful man did. Thank you for sharing your story and lifting me up on your shoulders.

If God takes me, I know in my mind and in my heart that it will be the greatest day of my life. Some will mourn, but everything will be alright. Since I had a glance of what's on the other side, my motivation to pursue the greatness of this life was gone because this life is the ugly version of our dreams on the other side and none of this existence are real except our love ones. Our real family in an infinite number are waiting on the other side.

@@nikkion2140 All of us have known each other for a long time in that place so believe and trust in Him and need not to worry about what's gonna happen next because our existence will continue after this. Dying due to an old age or disease along with your pure and strong beliefs with our creator is rewarding. The place where I went had a very pure ray of loving light like the sun and everyone were all happy that I had finally awakened from a deep sleep or a coma. But I guess my time on this earth isn't done yet because when I felt that there were two hands laid on my back, it pushed me right back to my living body. The experience I had made me conclude that there's no point of living a life designed based on the expectation of our society like having a big house, expensive car and earthly desire because whether you like it or not, any second, any moment and any day or night could be your last so live your life each day as if it is your last.

Thank you, Blu. You had a rare glimpse of the other side. We are here in this life, I believe, to learn to love God + love others, and to trust God's perfect timing and His perfect will for us. I've learnt from him that all the treasures and glories of life means nothing when one comes close to this moments of life and death. This courageous man and his beloved wife have thought me look forward with hope instead of regret. I would deeply want my wife and children to feel the same if I've to go first. Each one of us are given a life to enjoy it the best we can with our loved ones and together with other fellow human beings who share the short span of life on this planet. I also learnt that to rise above my near and small horizon is essentially an endeavour I've to break through to be able to see the wider perspective of the life and the world. Thank you all who put this film together and for lighting a huge part of my journey.

In 2016 I realized I would lose my girlfriend forever. Prior to that I was caught out in trivial problems with our relationship. The moment we learned that it would end changed everything. It was insanely weird, but so freeing and open to just being and loving each period of time we had together. Miss her. Death can be a giant that lifts you up above the daily minutia.

Yes, it is very difficult to let go of a person we love very much .... everyone knows the deep pain they feel when that moment comes ... but this gentleman is right .... it is better to be thanked for the good times together and not regret for the time that has not arrived ....... who knows, one day, we will be together again .... Thank you, Green Renaissance, once again for those comfort messages that make us think about life and make us see that we are all the same!

Be strong and courageous. Do not be fearful or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you. He will never leave you nor forsake you.
