I have a 2 story house plus a finished basement so I have 3 smaller versions of your light kit, one for each level of my house. In recent power outages, I tend to use my cell phone as my first go to flashlight. Plus the first thing I do in a blackout is use my phone to see how widespread the outage is and when the power company expects to restore power. Thanks for your post, it’s that time of year to check on my stuff. Some tea lights, matches, batteries go funny after a few years.

Vac seal your matches in a pint canning jar. After you put the matches in the jar with a piece of fine sandpaper, put the lid on and vac seal. When you are ready to use the matches take one out, put the lid back and use the ring to hold the sandpaper still. Strike your match on the sandpaper. Put your tea lights in a wide mouth pint jar as well.

Tall, empty prescription pill bottles, and other round, plastic containers with air- and water-tight lids also work.

What a smart way to keep your light options available and save the need for opening boxes, closets, drawers trying to find a light!

I have coffee cans full of candles and matches, emergency candles in the hall closet , the flashlights are also in the closet, the headlamps are somewhere else, bar b que lighters are in the trailer, with the solar lamps, so yes, we need to get a bin. Thanks !!😉❤️🙏🏽

I have the same survival radio, mine is black, it's gone through hell from camp outs and survival in the wilderness, it still works like new, even looks new, nothing broke, been in water a stream fell in was under the water and still works. Great radio. AM FM SW and Weather.

In the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, my provisions were all over the house and in the garage. The tall, full bookshelves lining our office walls buried our desks, computers and landline phones (no cellphones then), rendering me incommunicado. We lost $9,800 of possessions and had a $10,000 insurance deductible. That was the day I became a prepper and began my journey as a disaster preparedness volunteer and educator.

You might want to consider a way to store unused expired cooking oil as you could make a basic oil lamp and use that as the fuel source, even rancid oil in pinch will burn for heat or light as will some stale non eddible chips of almost any type as fire starters. (Funyons work really well)

I now keep a flashlight in every room of the house, so I'm not groping for too long trying to find one. Seeing your headlamp has inspired me to put one of those in a few places around the house and in the garage, since they free up my hands. Currently, they are only in my evacuation bag, camping equipment bin, and luggage.

For the radio, tape a note on with the local radio stations AM/FM. I listen to one nonlocal station and didn’t know the local ones😂 Excellent as always.

We have a lot of candles, lanterns, fans & radio etc. I like your idea of having it all in one larger container. I have quite a few lanterns and I think I will need 2 large containers. Thank you for your great ideas.

I'd like to add twice yearly maintenance of these lights-out provisions, at the same time we check our smoke detectors in spring and fall, when most of us endure daylight savings time changes. Recently, I've been recharging all my rechargeable items (radios, fans, mini heaters, lights, lanterns, flashlights, etc.)

The light sticks I bought 18 months ago are already too weak to depend upon for more than three hours (they were rated 8 and 12 hours, depending upon the color). I am dismayed that the massive quantity of batteries purchased two years ago are already very weak, even though I store all of these provisions inside my house. I am building a supply of rechargeable batteries (and a charger) to augment those alkaline batteries. I also purchased a battery tester, so I can monitor their strength to avoid surprises.

@@grlnexdoorable She's in Michigan. I was thinking sure one big house. I have one woodstove for a 3 bedroom. Heats it all. Autocorrect makes me go back to edit and edit and edit. I get a lot of cheap candles at night. Tired of those electric bills so conserve conserve. Replaced old woodstove that was torn out before I moved in. They also cut off well and septic. Can't afford to restore that too.
