I can't get my head around the modes. Aeolian, Phrygian, mixolydian, it's all greek to me

yea not keen with the names either, but it´s basically just starting the scales at a different base key, thus shifting them up and down while keeping the structure... well, as far as i understand it, which is not very well i suppose :D

Modes are not my forte. The scales are really a great way to build chops, whether guitar or piano. Autumn leaves is great to play in first position. I've played guitar since 12. All of me has nice posibilities for improvising. On the subject of the modes. This helps me.. work from C. Ok C is the 6 of something.. the something is a minor 3rd fret up on the guitar ..So that's Eb that Kent is working with What I do is use the locked Finger technique. It's going to be a easy on to find out chords you can play over. Cmin7 Dmin7b5 (Ebmaj7 Fmin7 Gmin7 Abmaj Bb7 Cmin7 Dmin7 Ebmaj7) Notice that playing/ improv over the sixth mode of Eb which Cmin you are playing the Aolian mode.. but don't think about C minor just think about CEb Maj...just some thoughts ..hope it helps .

Thanks Kent ! Being retired, I enjoy to watch one or two of your videos when im sharpest first thing in te mornings. I don't read so very few want to take me on and show me new moves. A challenge for me as I was taught one evening years ago to have my left hand playing 10th so my left is all over the place and somewhat underutiized of course. But, folks love the old tunes and I love playing them. Great fun. I enjoy your tutorials immensely sir.

I always recognise a harmonic minor scale because the last couple of notes have an Arabian snake charmer feel to them. Also, your hand reach in amazing!

Here is another way of rememembering the 3 min minors. First The first 5 notes are always the same. let's do C Ok, doing the modern versions... First the natural minor comes from Eb scale. last two notes of melodic are the Maj 6 and 7. Just A and B..the last two notes of the harmonics just Ab and B..That allows us to do chords like D dim7 . This is D F Ab B. Just stacked minor 3rds. There is a lot to this but that's things that help me.

I was playing some Klezmer type clarinet in the park and these women come up to me and say play us some of that snake charmer music. I didn't much think much about it untill a week later when I guy had two fairly large I believe python snakes in the park. When I played the horn they started to come towards me. Hey they were right about the snake charming stuff and the minor modes. I didn't sit around with them coming at me to be objective about they're reaction to BeBop major scales.

In a melodic minor scale, you do alter the 6th and 7th notes by raising the 6th and 7th notes on that way up and lower them on the way down... Whats up with that!!???
@KentHewittpiano88
@KentHewittpiano88 5 жыл бұрын
Watch my playlist on Minor Scales. This is explained. Ascending melodies are melodically better using the natural 6 and natural 7th. Also this allows for the leading tone or natural 7 which is essential to good melodies and the V-I relationship. However when descending harmonically the bass line works better playing the relative minor scale or the b6 and b7. Watch this video and all those in the Playlist on minor scales. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZfEhaGwotimrKc

Scales are only a means to an end. But they need to be learned (like a rule) and then broken or modified.... in the immediate moment of improvisation. Monk said "there's no wrong notes in jazz".

Kent your videos are amazing and I've learned more this summer about the piano than I've ever known.My question is how to practice this in other keys? I've been trying to just hammer away key by key in the minor modes/scales, I'm sure over time it might start sticking but it there a better way about this?
@KentHewittpiano88
@KentHewittpiano88 7 жыл бұрын
Start by mastering in C major. Practice in C major so you really know the scale well. Then transpose what you are doing in C major to F major (one flat). Then master everything in F major. Then go to one sharp = Gmajor. Master everything in one key or tonal center at a time. Add one flat or one sharp at a time. I know this is tedious.... but you will be much more satisfied with your progress if you do this with determination.... to master in one key at a time...slowly and methodically.

Your left hand is so smart! My piano playing has improved since I started watching your videos, i stumbled across you in my search for making more sense using altered dominant chords, got to love exotic modes. it all makes perfect sense to me on bass but my left hand on piano just wants to hang around the square sounding voicings with mostly roots and fifths when my right hand is busy. Your spontaneous and varied left hand chord voicing is pretty incredible, I appreciate all the lessons. I know you already have a few, but anything and everything regarding developing left hand facility / economy of motion is always helpful.
