The interval combination of a 4th and a whole-step are essential to the modern jazz sounds established by John Coltrane, Michael Brecker, Bob Berg, Joe Henderson, and so many other great jazz saxophone players. This video by me, Randy Hunter, at beginningsax.com shows the intrinsic relationship between this sound and the minor pentatonic scale.

I've learned to recognize the sound of 4ths and have heard them talked about a lot when talking about a modern sound, but I never knew how to incorporate it in my playing. This makes things much clearer. Superb video, very actionable advice, thank you!

Thanks for the feedback, Sean. I played these types of patterns for many years before realizing the embedded pentatonic in this one. The realization opened the door to additional applications, particularly when you approach like pairs in a similar manner to the way you can apply triad pairs.

I practiced the patterns you presented in this video on my alto sax, and instantly my solos felt more sophisticated. I loved the content-thank you so much! I’d love to see more tasteful content like this in the saxophone community.🤓
