18:47 I was just rewatching this. :) I just thought I’d mention that I haven’t seen the cup holder tray that you use (don’t think we have it in Australia) so what I use is an upside down silicone muffin tray. That has the dual purpose that not only does it keep my mugs apart when travelling but I can also used it for cooking. :)

It’s carbon monoxide CO alarm not carbon dioxide (CO2) CO is a product of incomplete combustion. A silent killer. CO is absorbed by the blood stream in preference to oxygen hence the need for an alarm.

We use the flat hose but this can be a bit inconvenient to always have to fully wind it all out even if you only need a short connection. What I have done is cut off a 5mtr length which is used most of the time. If I do need a hose over 20mtrs you can still join them together to get the 25mtrs back. Hope that is useful. Thanks

Thanks for the useful tips. In France the yellow jacket rule is one per useable passenger seat, regardless of how many people are actually in the vehicle. So if you are on your own but there are 4 travelling seats available, you must have 4 yellow jackets. Plus the driver must be able to put his on before leaving the vehicle. Not a problem in a MoHo but in a car it means being able to reach it from the drivers seat. Unless they’ve changed the rules again! Being a bit tight I’ve got some wooden levelling blocks that are bits of 9” x 3” wooden joist timber. I made them up as a temporary substitute after having a disaster with some cheap plastic ramps. The plastic ramps I had could according to the instructions be filled with either water or sand. With the 1/4 inch diameter fill holes, but as I was using them for the first time on a campsite in France and didn’t have any sand available I just opted to fill them with water. Brilliant, much to the great amusement of the friends we were travelling around with, when I drove up the ramps the two fill plugs shot out with a jet of water following. This happened thirty years ago, but I still get reminded about my water pistols to this day. So my “temporary” wooden blocks are still in use today, I really must get some of those Fiamma ones………I’ve been saying that ever since I cut the wooden ones!!!

Thanks, I remember the two yellow jackets required for France. Funny to hear about your levelling tramps!

A note to add Bob. Carbon Monoxide alarms need to be placed low down as it's heavier than air and will build up from floor level. If it is placed up by the smoke alarm it will be too late for anyone in the van as they will already have been breathing it as they sleep.
@BobEarnshawMoHo
@BobEarnshawMoHo 2 жыл бұрын
Because carbon monoxide is slightly lighter than air and also because it may be found with warm, rising air, detectors should be placed on a wall about 5 feet above the floor. The detector may be placed on the ceiling. Do not place the detector right next to or over a fireplace or flame-producing appliance.

Always completely unwind the hookup cable, never leave it on the reel or in a neat coil when in use, especially if there’s a heavy load on it. If it’s in a coil it will act as an inductor and heat up. The alternating current will have a alternating magnetic field and act as an inductor in a loop or coil, the higher the current or the higher number of coils/loops in the cable the greater the heating effect. I always completely uncoil my lead and if it’s too long for the distance to the socket I go the long way, laying it out flat and safely, even going the long way round the “van” or zig zagging along side if necessary. I was taught that a coiled cable carrying an electrical load is a fire hazard during my apprenticeship. This rule applies to any electrical cable (hookup cable or an extension cable) used to carry any sort of load. I’ve forgotten and done it, I was using a paint stripping gun on an extension lead. The job was only going to take ten minutes, so I didn’t bother to unroll the whole extension cable there was still about 15metres still coiled up. At the end of that ten minutes the cable wasn’t hot enough to cause a fire, but it was hot enough to remind me I’d just been an idiot. I actually have two hookup cables, a 20 metre one and 10 metre one. Being an ex electrical engineer I happened to have a spare bit of 2.5 mm 16 amp blue arctic cable and a pair of 16 amp connectors, so I just knocked up a 10 metre cable. Very often I’m on a pitch where the 10 metre cable is easily long enough, so I don’t have to worry about what to do with the excess length.

Yes, good advice, in my recommended accessories video coming up, I will mention I have a shorter cable too.

Sensible list, Bob, thank you. I would add some form of tyre repair kit. Two options: gunk to inject via the tyre valve which sometimes comes with an inflator as a pack with the motorhome, or my preferred option is a tyre plug repair kit, again requiring an inflator. Neither option offers a permanent safe fix, but unless the tyre has been badly damaged either should get you to your immediate destination so that a professional tyre shop can inspect ASAP. Most motorhomes (and cars for that matter) come without spare tyres these days. Those new to motorhomes may not realise that the tyres will not run-flat, so you can only limp a few metres to a relatively safe place in the event of a flat tyre. I really don't want to have to wait for hours at the side of the road just for a breakdown service to repair the tyre. For example in the case of the AA they will just use their tyre plug repair kit anyway. Other breakdown services may charge a high fee to source a spare for you, or put the van on a loader (after yet more waiting while a loader capable of carrying a motorhome turns up) if no spare is available.
