What does “Você aceita um cafezinho mean? I’ve never seen or heard “aceita” before. It’s frustrating to not understand phrases like this because I can’t order food yet after studying for 6 years and visiting Brasil 17 times. I practice every day with my girlfriend who only speaks Portuguese and have for 3 years now. I study every day. I watch movies and videos and I have classes every week. I have to translate almost everything into English to understand in my head or with a translator to understand. The words don’t instantly create images in my head like English words do. What can I do to learn? I can’t understand what the waiters are saying in restaurants so I can’t order yet. I can’t tell when one word ends and the next word begins. I’ve had my hearing tested and it is ok. Thanks

Olá, tudo bem? "Você aceita um cafezinho?" is used to offer someone coffee, or anything. Similarly to "would you care for...?" "Você aceita uma água?" "Você aceita uma ajuda?" 'Aceitar' means 'accept'. It can be used, as mentioned above, to offer someone something, or to ask if they take something, as we do when we go to a store and ask the clerk if they accept/take credit cards "Você aceitam cartão de crédito?" And, whenever you don't understand what a person says, ask them to repeat it but more slowly "Você poderia repetir mais devagar?".😉

That’s difficult for me to understand. I have to translate almost everything into English word for word to understand it usually. If something doesn’t translate well word for word into English I have problems understanding it. Memorizing phrases that are different than English phrases are difficult for me like the phrase you suggested. I usually say “repetir por favor”. “Como vai você” is still difficult for me to understand because the word order is different than English. It’s like my brain has problems with anything other than English. I haven’t been learning Portuguese, I have been translating. It’s like I’m deciphering a secret code instead of learning a new language. I need to find a way to learn. The Portuguese words don’t create images in my head like English words do until they are translated. I have to translate them in my head even if I know the words except for greetings and some very basic words. What can I do! I study and practice every day. Thanks!

@@patfromamboy Olá! Tudo bem? My tip is that you try to associate what you are learning with the context. Take a look at what Nathaniel Drew has to say about that. He has some interesting videos sharing his experience learning languages. This is the link to one of his videos kzbin.info/www/bejne/opnGp5igmqZ1Zqc

In the US we wouldn’t know what legumes mean. Legumes here are different kinds of beans. We would say “vegetables”
