One detail about the bolts inside the concrete base - you need to have them line up with the side of the building. If the base of the light pole is square, it looks odd if it is out of alignment with the buildings. You need to get this right BEFORE the concrete arrives - don't ask how I know!

I like that, even though this is part of a bigger series on building a storage facility, your videos can stand alone by themselves. You don’t bury information into a 20 minute “storage building update video 15”. You’re focused and to the point without long talking intros or title cards. Any “non-information” parts, like kids shoveling for example, shows people the honor and sanctity of work.

@@J5X7 I once got to use a Dob made with the concrete form. The fellow that made it ground his own mirrors and used microscope eyepieces as these were the only available to him (I'm talking 1960;s Brisbane, Australia) For the base he made a concrete mould into which he embedded the screw housing from a fire hydrant. He made wishbone style forks that he screwed into the base. Being a fire hydrant screw housing, he could control how much tension could be applied to the movement which was precise, firm, and very smooth. A real work of art and real engineering genius. Eight inch tube with long focal length which made for some spectacular viewing. The views of Venus and its cloud bands, was unparalleled in any other type of scope I've used. A planetary scope, to be sure, but it could hold it's own on the deep sky stuff as well.

'braces attached w/screws', @5:05 - Thank you! it dawned on me one day, about 20 years ago, that a screw would not beat apart a delicate form that had steps (round) formed from 1/4 plywood. the forms held and the only complaint was from the laborers who queried, " how are we gonna strip this form?" I offered them my cordless screw gun...Didn't think of the crisco trick tho, thanks again.

In some instances the uprights have to be finished, as in when the government says no lines from the tube. This makes for good times when you pour 20 or more. First strip the tube, unwrap or cut with side grinder down the side. Next get a wooden or my favorite a sponge float and rub them down. Gives a nice rough finish and is much easier and cheaper than putting ardex on all of them. Side note, ardex is great for making a bad situation look good and adheres great, just very pricey.

We always did these in two pass pour protocol. First with a 3.5 to 4 inch slump to seal the bottoms and then wet up the load for fill pass to a 5 or so to give a less bubble entrenched finish. Common sense but it's nice to have in the plan before you start pouring.

Pressure is force per area and the area is getting bigger -> higher tensile stress in the tube along the most critical way (longitudinal stress). Nearly always these pole bases are backfilled with native excavated material at the wrong moisture content and with near zero compaction. Fortunately the lateral loads are very low so failure (listing) is rare, unless they get smacked by a heavy vehicle. From an engineering view, these things built without compaction are the bumblebee that can't fly.
