Enjoyable! That row of window seats on Deck 3 forward is such a great place to hang out and watch the sea. It's always a thrill when they reach eye level...or above! I was aboard QM2 on her early June 2017 westbound transatlantic crossing, when she was diverted to rescue the stranded solo yachtsman Mervyn Wheatley. We had just passed through a major Atlantic depression which generated very high seas and strong winds. Crew members said it was the worst conditions they'd seen in ten years. The ship's pitch and roll motions were pretty substantial at times- passengers walking the passageways did so weaving side to side and bumping walls! But she is designed for this duty, and is manned by an exceptional crew.

I was scheduled to cruise west in May of that year, but had to cancel. Lost 2000 pounds which sucked, but it seems I would have missed the action of your June crossing regardless. I booked a solo cabin right down near the water with the large round windows.

I’m really, really envious. When I left Fleetwood Nautical College my first position was as one of the Radio Officers on MVQE2 (callsign GBTT). In a perverse way I loved the rough weather as the majority of passengers were too sea sick to bother us in the Radio Room with requests for telephone calls. Two notable occasions were when we sailed through Hurricane Bertha in the Mexican Gulf, and when we went to the rescue of an Oil Rig in the North Sea as it had lost its anchor points and life boat in Force 12 seas. Happy times. I’ve yet to experience a cruise as a passenger though. Regards Nidge.

That's because of active stabilizers that greatly reduce ship rolling. Too expensive to have on cargo ships or cheap passenger ferries, but all serious superliners have them.

Force 9 is 3 notches below hurricane force. 9=severe gale; 10=storm; 11=violent storm; 12=hurricane (74+ mph). Gusts are much higher in mph than those numbers of course. Just saying. Interesting video but not for me, eek!

This is slightly puzzling because while the weather report says hurricane force winds (force 12), the sea state is only "very rough", which is 4 - 6m and the seas expected with force 7. Above "very rough" are high, very high and phenomenal. The latter (over 14m/46 feet) is expected with force 12, with sea conditions being "air filled with foam and spray, sea completely white with driving spray, visibility very seriously affected." Looks like you got off lightly!

It's the same ingredient that produces the anti-nausea effect as dramamine, works just as well, but costs almost nothing in comparison. Dramamine is just diphenhydramine mixed with a little bit of a stimulant to counter the side effect that diphenhydramine makes you tired. You can just take a couple store brand diphenhydramine and drink a cup of coffee and get exactly the same effect. Lol. Except it's literally pennies on the dollar compared to dramamine... Side note, The brand Benadryl is a completely different drug in the UK so to avoid confusion (and save money) just always look for diphenhydramine rather than the brand name.
