I love that the main takeaway from Titanic was “We should go on a cruise!”

*not a cruise, a transatlantic voyage. Cuz the Titanic was an ocean liner and likewise so is the QM2 being designed to cross oceans. Which is the whole selling point of it, being the last remaining operational Ocean Liner.

Well, the thing is, Titanic really reminded people of the romance of the ocean liners. It reminded people that traveling used to be a luxurious and elegant experience in its own right. With deregulation, air travel had lost its jet-age glamor and become something cheap, mundane, and mildly unpleasant. Between that, the dizzying rise of the Internet and early mobile phones, and the hectic whirl of late 90s consumerism, there were a lot of people who saw Titanic and suddenly realized that they really wanted to take some time to slow down, unplug, and enjoy the journey.

Your video is terrific and captures the beauty and unique experience of the last ocean liner in service. Thanks for sharing your experience. It's quite addictive and exclusive by its uniqueness. And the QM2 is the last one. Nothing like she will be built again. Operational cost, a dying breed of "The Great Gatsby" like explorers, generation moving to iPhone esthetics and rationale.., ROI is not simply there. But what an amazing feeling it is to see hundreds of people reading books in the middle of the North Atlantic on a ship with FOUR Grand Pianos!

@@md109 A dying breed, maybe, but to say another ocean liner the likes of QE2 or QM2 will NEVER be built again is setting yourself up for failure. Honestly, as the various airlines around the world continue to hemorrhage money while people voice more concern about emissions and, let's be honest, planes cannot get more efficient (but ships can) as service continues to get worse, alternatives WILL continue to exist.

If you can save $2388 by January 2026 you can get on qm2 on an 8 night transatlantic run in a sheltered balcony cabin. We are on qm2 in March for a med cruise and have gone for a standard balcony cabin (not club). But for colder times of a year, sheletered will be perfect. That's what we had for our Norway cruise. If you want to do it, save the money. You won't regret it. Infact, you'll be saving for another once you're back.

I think a key factor to how fun and romantic a ship can be overall deals with the other passengers. The fact that everyone dressed up and actively participated seems to have made that trip extra special. I've always been an avid passenger liner lover, and even spent my first honeymoon night on the Queen Mary herself (as the floating hotel). I'm so glad you shared this because I've always been attracted to the idea of sailing aboard Queen Mary 2, but was always immediately intimidated by the massive, confusing selections available.

I think so too. Whenever my parents travel with Cunard, they say the same. And I experienced the same when I traveled with both the Mary and Elizabeth when I was a teenager. Compare that to an AIDA cruise and its way different. Much nicer. But personally, I prever the Elizabeth or the other smaller sister ships to the Mary 2. They go to much more interesting places and its overall a great experience. But then again, Mary 2 has a place where you can (or could) get burgers and watch TV while doing so. And they had an area for kids/teens where you could play videogames. Still i liked the elizabeth more.

I have a friend who lives in the same city as I do who took the same voyage in reverse this year and she's about 15 years younger than me. I'm 47 and it's uncouth to either ask or reveal a ladies age. Honestly, looking at the amenities and activities, I would probably choose this ship if I ever decided to go on my first cruise. Loads of public space and bars, A LIBRARY, jazz clubs, lectures, a planetarium, formal dress code I can wear my vintage dresses to....No casinos, loud club nights, or broadway shows? So down. Even the datedness feels kinda cozy and nostalgic if you grew up in the early 2000s with parents in corporate America.

Lol, it's gratifying that the only operating oceanliner also beats the snot out of most cruise ships in amenities. Also, the dining areas in the middle may not makes sense for layout, but it is distinctly an oceanliner thing. It is the smoothest part of the ship in rough seas and you don't want plates and food sliding around everywhere.

The smell you referred to sounds like grey water. Drains normally have goose necks or traps that are always filled with water to block smelly gases from coming back up… on land it works great but at sea the moving of the ship will cause the water in the trap to move around allowing gases to escape. Probably not an age thing really for the ship so much as a sailing in the open Atlantic thing. Best way to deal with it is to have the stoppers or plugs in sinks at all times when not in use.
@explorer47422
@explorer47422 13 күн бұрын
But how do they deal with that on other cruise ships?
@bathyprobe
@bathyprobe 13 күн бұрын
@ good question maybe they don’t. I’ve spent a lot of time at sea but never on a cruise ship. Most of the time the smell isn’t there, it tends to come up through the plumbing in bad weather. My suspicion here is that the smell came up because it was an open ocean transit with the ship rolling a fair bit. Most cruise ship passengers I would think are probably in calmer seas most of the time and don’t get a chance to notice that odour.

As I have not personally experienced the "upper" classes, we found absolutely nothing lacking from the team that supported us. A signifant upgrade from the more basic classes, and I think it is sufficiently up-value to be very worth taking your 'trip of a lifetime"! Ship is so big you can see it over all those buildings and easily read her name from your seat on the train.

See, this is why I appreciate this channel. A transatlantic trip on the Queen Mary 2 would be an absolute bucket list dream come true for me - but I don’t even think I could afford the lower-end cabin price. But being able to see the ship as you did, hear your review, and enjoy this presentation - I loved it. It makes me happy to know such a ship exists, and that you shared your experience with us. Also - I get ridiculously excited about the Nomadic. Truly looking forward to seeing your further adventures!

Excellent video! Thank you for showing the beautiful duplex suite. I just disembarked from QM2 in NYC after a 13 night Caribbean cruise over Christmas / New Year’s. I first sailed QM2 on a trans Atlantic crossing as a bucket list trip expecting it to be a one time trip. Well I have now sailed 18 voyages and over 160 days on QM2. Even at 21 years old mid way through her 40 year minimum design service life she is still a masterpiece of engineering and a fantastic place to be. I agree with everything you said about her exterior wear and tear as well as the stateroom bathrooms. She is scheduled for a major 2026 mid life refit. Hopefully those issues will be addressed then. Whenever I sail other ships I find none can compare to QM2.

Jake, as a person who has education in television and film production, I’ve really been impressed by your videos. I actually used to work on travel shows and originals for a short time, and got maybe a little too used to traveling to some very high-end places around the world, and being treated like royalty for the promotion of said places that we gave them. I miss that time so much. I’m not old by any means, but I am now 45, and my career has largely fallen apart in recent years. You seem very resourceful and ambitious, and that’s refreshing to see. It would be fun for me to go over your videos as an editor for quality control. At times they seem nearly perfect, but I always do notice a few mispronunciations or things that could be improved. But overall, very great. My only cruise was in 2002, on a voyage from Montreal up through the St. Lawrence, stopping at 3-4 ports, finishing in Boston, on Holland America line. It was…very disappointing. By ship standards, the ship was very small and outdated. I think I was the only person younger than 65 aboard as well, and many of the few things to do onboard catered to this older crowd. The food, although paraded out as if it was a 5 Michelin Star restaurant, was very poor, on par with a buffet. The crew was also all from Indonesia, and spoke only broken English. I frankly only really enjoyed the ports where we stopped, such as Quebec City, Halifax, Charlottetown, and Bar Harbor. I’ve always been fascinated by Cunard line though, and a fan of history. So a transatlantic trip like this on their line has always appealed. Although I doubt I could ever afford the suite you were staying. Even though I’m one who would completely appreciate every detail of it.

Perfectly timed video, my brother and I were just talking about taking the Queen Mary 2 over to England with our dad and then flying into Dublin for an Ireland trip. Defentily not cheap, but something I think we will be doing in the next few years. Thanks Jake!

I did this trip a few years ago (in June). I loved it, mainly because of the activities - Shakespeare clinics, astronomy classes, and a bunch of WWII veterans headed to Normandy who spent an hour each morning telling audiences about their experiences during the war. It was incredible. (And like you, I think I was one of the youngest people on board at 43....).

The last true Ocean Liner! Awesome video and review Jake! As someone who's also always been fascinated with ships, this trip is definitely a bucket list item for me. Been on a few cruises in the Caribbean and the Mexican Riviera, but it's just not the same. I've been aboard the Queen Mary several times and you can definitely see the "callouts" to the original ship in the design/decor.

Great review. My wife and I aren't people that take cruises, but we did take the QM2 in December 22 from New York to Southampton. We booked the least expensive inside cabin, figuring that in the North Atlantic in December, we wouldn't have much to look at outside anyway. I was very impressed with the little cabin. It is small but everything was high quality, especially considering the price. I understand that in the premium staterooms one would expect a bit more from the bathrooms. We were blown away by the food and service in the regular main dining room. Not a single complaint there. If you're looking at your budget, when you compare the price to a transatlantic flight, along with 7 days of room and board, it's really reasonable. But you have to have the time. Planning on doing it again in November or December 2025. This time we will likely upgrade to an outside room with a porthole, or the small balcony.

We actually moved across continents thanks to the QM2 and her ability to host our Bernese mountain dog at the time. While we enjoyed the ship for the limited time we could (a lot of hanging out in the kennel), we found the food to be quite bland sometimes and the service in Brittania was really lackluster. We did like the overall aesthetic and lectures but the overall experience definitely wasn’t up to par with Disney or Celebrity (Beyond class) ships. Enjoyed the review and seeing your take on this though!
