Losing control of your emotions and getting angry at yourself or your opponent... The list goes on and on. You aren't alone, and you aren't a lost cause. I know this is a 2yr old post, but it is perfect for me right now. I've been losing tons of games, sets and matches after being WAY up. I had been focused on improving grounds strokes and that isn't my problem. I've been focused 100% on improving my MENTAL game and in only the last couple weeks, I'm winning. closing when I'm ahead and even getting some come back wins.

It was amazing the difference in attitude between Sean and Topher. Im not saying you will always come back from 5-2 down, but helps.

And Sean didn't think he could feel any worse. After seeing Topher come back he's probably thinking why couldn't I do that.

This is really helpful. I still struggle with nerves during matches, especially when serving. This might sound weird, but it’s encouraging to be reminded that this is an issue that players of all levels have to work to overcome.

I remember my very first USTA match 7 years ago. I remember it because I played so tight, it was awful!! Ed's mental mastery course was extremely helpful for me to understand the mind better, how thoughts come and go and not get on that train of negative thoughts every time they come. It is still tough to let go and not always achievable but I have appreciation and perspective now that I didn't have then and that is what I still use in those moments.

This is beyond worthy value. All that we see and deduce as the outside world is our inner mind/brain's interpretation and filtering of different systems of the conscious and subconscious mind. This is the conclusion of our neuropathways that we have solidified over time in addition to much of it initiating from our parents. You’ll see this in biomechanics as well as our daily thoughts, and the processing of them in order to produce an outcome. Focusing on thoughts that will provide constructive results for every incident including our tennis game can eventually be completely automated, just the way we like it. ET content at supreme levels now. What’s next??

To relate to the all ready legendary game of Topher against Ben. Topher had positive self talk during the third set. His come on!!! amped him up. It relieved tension. At the same time, Letting Ben know he was still fighting. Ben even commented during the match in his own unique way.So he noticed it as well. It may even have shifted the balance of the match where until that moment Ben had the upper hand. He cheered for his own winner I don't see it as unfair. When opponent cheer for a mistake I make. Without him having anything to do with that's not cool. like a YES after you dubbel fault. Now a days before my injury I am like don't make me angry or I make you suffer even more. Like a Lion playing with his food before killing & eating. I won't comment maybe a look. Like it on now, it their right to do like they do. In a Big third set it can get you over that dead spot. Rogers Fire & ice. Mentally but also tactically. Did Ben in both ways brought plenty of ice to try and nearly succeeding in putting out Tophers fire but his fire simply burned just hot in the end.To melt Ben last bucket of ice.

I commend Ian and Ed for putting this program together. Perhaps this training could apply to other life scenarios and not just challenges on the tennis court. When adrenaline, cortisol and other sympathetic nervous system responses kick in, it is very difficult to control without some kind of framework, off and on the court I think. I've read many books on the subject, have had counseling / therapy, I intellectually grasp coping mechanisms such as CBT and mindfulness, but still waiting for the "light bulb of enlightenment" to click on. Be like Ben and Topher and never give up I suppose is one way to look at it. 🙂

Great video but I'm not over my mental issue on court. I'm far too compliant an opponent to fully challenge an opponent. Hitting easily returnable shots but steadily more challenging over time as I work on it. Is there an easy solution to overwrite that mental and muscle memory?
@EssentialTennis
@EssentialTennis 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think the key is "overwriting" or pretending it never happened, J. Personally, I think the key is understanding and believing that today can be a new day, you can choose to respond differently to challenges instead of always following the same story/script.

@@EssentialTennis I believe in a new day but unconscious muscle memory kicks in. Like an easy ball to put away for the win, I move aggressively to the ball. Then I go in for the kill but end up hitting a softie right back at them. They proceed to run me around until I can't reach the ball or they make an unforced error. Edit: It's not like it's a bundle of nerves or beating myself up situation. It's trying to go easy on the opponent by not pushing the gas pedal at all as a measure of respect for the opponent.
