Grate match to both. Enjoyed it very much. Scott went beast mode after being down 2-4 in the second and won 4 straight games. Congrats Scott. About Adam's foot faulting, yes he does foot fault but I don't think he even realizes that he does. Also, vast majority on us tennis players foot fault. I spent some time watching specifically for foot faults at USTA tournaments that I was playing in and I saw so many ppl foot faulting all the time and it was at all levels 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, and even 4.5. We never see ourselves on video playing tennis, to realize that we foot fault. It's a very common problem. And as Ian already said, Adam's foot faults didn't help him. Again, grate job to both players and Ian, I would love to see you play against Scott, once you are 100%. Also, Scott vs. the green shirt guy would be a fun match too if you can work it logistically.

Some club players (right-handed player for example)foot faulted on their serve especially on the duce court it's because of their sharp standing angle positioning before the toss, and regardless of whether it's the pinpoint or platform stands chosen(unconsciously step into the court with the right foot to square off the angle, hence, requires less midair body rotation to face the target) before making contact with the ball. Never mind, foot fault only exited in mind but not in reality for a lot of tennis plays. 🤣🤣🤣

I totally relate to Scott.. Big first serve that feels like it's always letting you down but also gets you out of trouble when you need it to. Always giving myself a hard time and picking apart all my mistakes. Always starting off a little too hot and tight and feeling like I'm down but after a set and a half start to chill out and flow and cruise to the end. On a good day that is.

Fun match to watch. Truly a battle of an offensive vs. a defensive player. Scott kept Adam pinned back with heavy shots and hit some truly nice winners and had great touch at the net. Adam for the most part made Scott hit the extra shot often. I can see Adam's game working well for him on clay while I'll give Scott the edge on faster surfaces but either way, well played boys.

Great match guys. Scott elevated his play and hit out when he was down 4-3, hit through the ball off both sides and charged the net, forcing the issue. That threw Adam off just enough. That half volley pickup for a winner and then the cross court rip, overhead return were the final nails. Nice match guys!

That was a highly entertaining match between two players who are constantly thinking and adjusting their game. These are obviously high level players definitely representing a solid 4.5 level of play. The contrasting styles and problem solving was fun to watch. I felt as though Adam should have taken more chances and bigger shots because he showed that he had that capability. When he summed it up at the end I think he realized this because he brought more of his clay court style strategy to the faster indoor court. Thanks Ian for another well executed exhibition that was not only entertaining but also provides lots of opportunity for recreational players to gain valuable insight.

Just want to say thank you again for posting this video and the other matchplay videos. I enjoy these so much and learn so much from watching regular players battle it out and talk about the experience WHILE they are doing it. I wonder about the value, for the players, of having the cameras in the corner to check in and externalize their thoughts--ostensibly with us, but also, of course, with themselves. The opportunity to reflect, aloud, on the action AS it is happening may have advantages for the players. There is something about hearing the words spoken out loud that is different from just having them swirling around in one's head. I wonder if you have talked to the players about this, Iain--whether or not they perceive an advantage to them in the opportunity to talk through the match on camera as it transpires. I suspect this might be beneficial to them.

Ian - First off, I very much appreciate your putting the effort into pulling this off. Very enjoyable to watch. As an official, next time would you add singles stakes? That's as much a rule as whether Adam foot faulted or not. To those many comments, he has a step-up serve where his back foot did touch the line, which we (an official) would call. He didn't step up as far on his second serve. Interesting comments on the various strategies of both Adam and Scott. As one in the field of psychology, I appreciate your analyses on them. Kudos to Scott and Adam! As they both pointed out, it's not easy putting yourself into this type of situation.

Adam serving at 4-3: "If I win this first point, I probably win the set." Oh, Adam! Speaking not as a sports psychiatrist but as one lucky enough to work with one full time, it's best not to take yourself out of the moment like that. The finish line is still way too far away. Stick with process, and let that dictate result. It's a lose-lose to put that much pressure on the first point of a 4-3 game, because if you win it you might relax too much, and if you lose it, as you did, you might feel you're in a more significant hole than you really are. Otherwise tho, awesome match from both guys. Thanks Ian for continuing to bring us these great matchups!

I was thinking the same thing in that moment and the moment he was trailing 4:5 and saying his goal is to survive and get the 5-5. Going for results is not improving your mindset. In those situation I tell myself to play smart and believe in my game. If I hit some good balls, I am satisfied, because it can only be a win or a lost against a better player.

I say, he doesn't make foot faults, ( for the sake of argument) I get why some would think so. Pro's land even further in the court ( if that is what you are worried about). His point of contact how I saw it, was before his feet landed inside the court. So no foot fault for me. Even harder to spot as an opponent, and really??? if that is your excuse because of repeatedly foot faulting you lost or it threw you off, I would doubt that point of view. As a coach I liked Adams serve he is optimizing his length has great forward momentum going through the ball. He isn't the tallest so with what he got he does a great job.

Very interesting to watch a match up between two very different players and seeing Adam to be very close of winning a set despite being less gifted and skilled. I remember Ian's video where he was showing on this chart, what types of players there are. Scott has a lot of talent and skills to play offensive and still can play consistent while Adam barely can hit a winning shot, but can run for like every ball and is very consistent. Apart from putting pressure on himself from the moment where he just had broken Scott, Adam played very smart. Regarding his good performance against a superior player, Adam should be a kind of role model for most of us as it's way more promising to focus on consistency and smart on-court choices than on great shots and versatility like Scott's play. I expect Ian to create an analyses video like he did for the match between Mark and Cole. And most probably he will point out ways how Adam even could have won that set or even the whole match.

I appreciate the nice words, but I wonder if you are selling Adam a little short by saying he is less skilled-when we play on clay, my shots sit up for him more and he hits plenty of winners. I hit harder, sure, but power is just one aspect of the game. I’m actually a decent retriever myself, but I don’t want to get into that game with him, since he is my superior in that aspect. Tennis is trying to play your best game and make your opponent play his or her worst, and our contrasting styles make for an interesting struggle.

@@scottbroady3159 Looking for ways to be as good as possible will always lead to a focus on fundamental good things and the bad ones, too. I know you're saying he is a good player as the match had been tight and I rate him a smart good opponent, but from my point of view his upside is lower than yours. If you had played at your best, he wouldn't have won more than 1 or 2 games a set. So in my opinion you didn't execute as good as you 'should'. It is easier analyzing from your couch than on the court for sure. I imagine what could have been if you had played more consistent with more focus on his forehand (that I rate lower than his backhand), more slice and more attacking the net. Adam likes the midfast game from the baseline. He doesn't seem to be a guy that hits passing shots on any given situation. Take him out of his comfort zone and he will lose some opportunities. I really know it, as my game is partly the same as his.

Adam kind of reminds me of Andy Murray. Not only in the way he hits his backhand, but also the scrambling he does to get to every ball. Also the little oohs and ahs when he gets surprised by a ball or gets wrong footed.

Interesting game. Would love to see a map of Scott’s net clearance heights. Seems constantly on the attack with very few rally balls, same against Mark too. I think he mentioned the need to maintain the intensity, but would it not be more advisable to lower the intensity at times and play the percentages for a few points at a time? Or does that disrupt the timing of his striking? Another alternative is to mix in more net points, I guess. Unbelievable reactions/hand-eye coordination. It’s exhausting watching him gunning for almost every ball! Very enjoyable watch and insight, though.

Good points, and I think I did switch up in the direction you are talking from Mark to Adam-I was prolonging my rallies and not being so aggressive on returns. It paid off in the UE column and subsequently got me the W. Clearance was definitely higher the second time, and I went for more disciplined aggressive shots. Also was at the net more.

Awesome match, guys!! You are both fantastic players! I noticed a lot of low clearance balls from Scott in this match - even after he recognized that he was into the net a lot. My typical solution in that situation is to increase my margin over the net until I start hitting my targets again. Someone watching might still see me hitting those "one-foot" balls, but they are misses from my perspective. Scott, can you share any insight into why you continued to hit low-clearance even while you were struggling with the net?

I didn’t feel like I was getting stuck in any ruts in terms of my net clearance; I missed some, but generally, the results were better than the last match. That was by design, and I think that there’s room for more improvement. I appreciate the perspective, though, and I’ll rewatch to see if maybe I’m perceiving reality differently!

Without analyzing the whole match, it is very possible that the aggressive net-clearance paid off by winning you more points than it cost you (which is good tennis strategy in a nutshell, right?). I've been loving these confession cam match videos. One small suggestion, can the on-person mic sound be edited out unless they actually say something? The ASMR huffing puffing grunting is really not very pleasant on a noise cancelling headset.

On a floating ball, no less. I thought the previous shot was debatably out but so fast it was uncallable. Then the next shot... wow. Not sure if he thought he cheated himself the shot before so better call this close one too, but that is not how anyone should be breaking to go up 3-2 in a set. awesome fight. Scott could use a better wrist delay on his fh. he didn't always set in the same place and when he started missing his wrist was dropping early and far too tight.. he found the FH again later by keeping his wrist a little more forwards to begin. if he knows thats what the issue is, he can adjust for that right away.

Hey Ian its not necessary but I think it would improve the video quality of these videos if you got 60fps cameras. 60fps just looks really nice with tennis videos because of the smoothness.

Regarding foot faults - At this level and most especially below this level, unless a person has an absolute cannon for a serve that really puts you on immediate defense, I don't think it has any impact on the actual game or the score. I've known a few foot faulters that served at like 50mph, nobody cared. We still had to stand in on their serves to get better timing. :-)

Many viewers noted Adam's foot fault. Yes, it is not fair to his opponent that Adam's foot faults aren't called. However, from a different perspective, I think the foot faults also hurt Adam's serve technically too. With his right foot coming across so much and onto the court, he loses the torque from his hip. By the time he jumps up and hits the ball, his hip is completely square. In other words, Adam is only serving with the rotation of his upper body the way he does it. I think if Adam corrects his foot fault by leaving the trailing right foot behind his left foot through the serving motion, he can get more spin and pace on his serve. Killing 2 birds with one stone to cure his foot fault issue and add more spin/pace to the serve.

Good comment here. I actually thought Adam's foot faulting was hurting himself more technique-wise. If I were his opponent, I would've been completely okay with his foot faulting.

Scott should try a more controlled racquet so he can take the big swings with cofidence. instead of a Babolat pure aero - try a babolat pure strike or a head speed mp plus. I think it would really help when trying to control more flat shots and more feel with the touch shots.

Appreciate the input; I’ve been a longtime Prestige user in the past, and this is really the first turbocharged stick I’ve played. I will say this: I don’t feel a big change in my control (I volley and can hit drop shots well), and my serve and ground game are bigger. Seems a good bargain, and really, it’s not the tools, it’s the mechanic, right?
