I think Amateur radio was useful in the days before Telephones or TV were common in homes. It is so little used, and limited to an even tinier group of people by unnecessary regulation, even if there were no regulation you wouldn't see any increase in it's use. It does have some historical relevance I suppose.

For many, it's not about being "useful", it's a hobby. In the same way as fishing as a hobby isn't an efficient way of getting a fish, people typically take up hobbies because they are interested in a pastime. Amateur radio is a hobby for like-minded people to experiment with radio and technology.

One who takes the exam as of September should be careful with the Restrictions section of this video ( 4:55 ), because things have changed, and I assume it is the very opposite now. Thank you for the new version of this video found here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qaO0hGWOpZqjbbc&pp=iAQB Now Foundation Licensees are restricted to 25W operation, as well as build the own tx station kit. I'm still not sure about the band plan changes, though. I am also worried about the exam reference data "ex307" printout which potentially contains old information regarding the "Maximum Peak Envelope Power level" right column in the "Foundation Licence Parameters" table. I booked my exam for September to benefit from the syllabus changes. If the exam weight of this topic is 6 marks like mentioned in this video that could significantly impact the results of one's exam .

Also, I've found this subject challenging, not the video as that's clearly well done. The subject matter, essential but challenging. So, I'll have to watch this one a few times. So, if your views go up, that'll be me. 'Fanks and 'Hello' from Brentwood.
