Establishing decision-making authority is the last component to developing an organizational structure. The purpose of this process is to ultimately determine who in the organization has the authority to make decisions. Although no organization resorts entirely to one form of authority distribution, all organizations rely on one primary method of distributing authority. In addition to discussing the centralized and decentralized methods of authority distribution, we'll also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each method.

goldewl I really depends upon the requirements of the position, the skill set of their direct reports, and how much authority they're given to make decisions independently. Although every situation is different, I've heard 3-5 employees is a general rule of thumb. However many organization's exceed that due to the cost of hiring additional supervisors.
