I am a Washington state resident and have been a full-time RVer since 2007. I did receive some correspondence from the Department of Licensing regarding the address on my driver's license which was questionable. After some back and forth correspondence The DOL told me that I was just fine and I have continued to maintain my Washington residency, even though I do not have a physical address there.😊

I’m from Delaware and even though I’ve been physically living in Maryland, just over the border, on a boat for 3 years and now, in an RV…. I still use Delaware and I don’t feel bad either. All the big corporations use it as a tax haven so why can’t I? 😂 Honestly, I hate the whole address conundrum. I physically own my home (technically), yet I’m treated like I’m homeless in every other regard. I’m address-less, not homeless. My home just moves!

Texas has abolished the inspection of vehicles as of this upcoming year 2025 (last I heard). Correct me if I am wrong. (I know this video is 2 years old so just updating).

That's great to hear, more options are better! We've heard other people comment that SD does not allow you to have residency if you have income from another state but that has never applied to us. Adding Texas as another option is wonderful, especially since many RV'ers travel through Texas or spend winters down that way. Thanks for the update! - Jenny and Lance

Them not honoring a form of ID on their own paperwork sounds very familiar. When I got my Florida driver’s license, they would not honor my military ID, even though their own form said it could be used.

Can you still pwn homes in different states and still domicile in SD FL or TX. We are looking to travel fulltime but will be keeping our homes.
@CrazyEmptyNest10 ай бұрын
It depends on the state...some states like CA do not like this and will come after you for taxes. They may make you prove that you don't actually spend time living in the state. You would still have to pay property taxes to the state with the homes but you could designate another state as your official domicile. Think of it as similar to "snow birds" - they domicile in one state or own a home there but spend months in another state and possibly own a home or condo there. If your domicile state is SD FL or TX but you winter in AZ, you don't pay taxes in AZ, you're just visiting there some times. Another option would be putting your homes in a simple land trust, legally the trust owns the home but you are the beneficiary. You could then set up domicile in SD FL or TX with no issues. Hope this makes sense? - Lance and Jenny

SD changed their laws effective 7/1/2023 - they are stripping voting rights from nomads and preventing remote workers from using a PMB address if the company they work for is outside SD. So long SD!
@CrazyEmptyNest Жыл бұрын
Thanks for this update! We have never worked for an out of state employer since becoming residents of S.D. so this change does not really apply to us. However, we can see the frustration for remote workers with this new law in S.D. Best of luck! - Lance and Jenny

Excellent video thank you! I've been down a long rabbit hole in searching the best income tax free states side by side. My top priorities are no income tax, no retirement tax (I have a 401k), no requirement to be physically present in state for long, no vehicle emissions or safety inspections. I'm particularly interested in FL and TN. Can you offer any spreadsheets you may have showing a side by side state comparison as I'm sure you created at some point? Or any websites that you found very good at what I'm after? PLEASE SHARE YOUR HELP AND WISDOM AS I REALLY NEED IT!!!
@CrazyEmptyNest3 жыл бұрын
Hi Greta - We're glad you liked this video. Unfortunately, we don't have any side by side comparisons or spreadsheets as we just did extensive research and talked with others who were trying to do the same as us. If FL would have been nearby, we would have probably made that an option as well but SD was close for us at the time. I know the RV Club Escapees also has a lot of information so I would check there next! Best of luck! - Jenny and Lance

Loved your video Great information very helpful. One question I'm selling my house in Alabama to my son that is a disabled Vet. no money down ,no interest , pay what he can, but the house in my name can I still change my Domicile to SD. Alabama does not cut you any slack on 401K city, state , and Fed taxes . I'm retired I have payed all my life. I feel that have made enough off of me .

Awesome video!!!! Great info!!! Which DMV in South Dakota did you go to? We're about to establish domicile in South Dakota in a couple of months, looking for a DMV that is familiar with the process. Also, which Anytime Mailbox location did you use and which plan did you use? Sioux Falls or Spearfish location?

Once you do the Real ID thing, you don't have to do it again. You know what would be a helpful business? A place that can store those documents for you. A You Tube creator had his tow vehicle stolen and his ownership and registration were in the truck! It took him months to get it straightened up.

When you say you need an ID etc, is that the ID from the previous state you had lived in? Or is the form of ID just need to prove it's you. And not have anything to do with name matching up to a SD address?
@CrazyEmptyNest Жыл бұрын
You'll need a previous government issued ID - Drivers License, Passport, etc. Once you establish a residence (Mailing address) you'll need to show this to the DL Office to get your drivers license.
@brenterikson1082 Жыл бұрын
When it comes to your passport, did you have to have your new South Dakota address on it or was your old address from where you were moving from sufficient?
@CrazyEmptyNest Жыл бұрын
Hi Brent - passports don't have addresses it is just one of the acceptable documents SD accepts to prove your US citizenship and identity.

I just heard from another KZbinr that had a domicile in South Dakota but worked full-time virtual for a company in different state and now he left South Dakota because they’re forcing him to pay unemployment taxes from his company in a different state. Have you experienced this yet?
@CrazyEmptyNest Жыл бұрын
As an employee, the business should cover any unemployment taxes but there is no law that prohibits an employer from passing these on to employees, this is more of an issue with the company versus the state. As a business in South Dakota, all companies are required to pay State Unemployment Tax Act (SUTA) taxes. The current pay base is $15,000, with rates ranging between 1.2 and 6.0%. In South Dakota, all new non-construction employers will pay a SUTA rate of 1.2% for the first year and 1.0% for the second and third years. However, this is a tax credit for the business against any federal unemployment taxes and reduces the companies overall taxes in the long run. Basically if you are domiciled in SD as a person or company, you will still pay all required taxes regardless of the actually state you work in but you will not pay state income taxes. These situations can be very nuanced depending on the persons situation and companies policies.
@nospam3001 Жыл бұрын
Not exactly. The issue is that now SD won't let you claim SD as your domicile for income tax purposes if you work for an out of state company. They get to that by a round about means that involves not letting you pay into their unemployment fund, which triggers some sort of tax rule that makes you pay income tax to the other state. As far as I can tell, it only affects RV'ers who work remotely for an out of state company. There were two even more strict bills introduced that didn't pass, so things may get worse in the future. SD is trying to reduce the number of phony residents who are voting in their elections. You can't blame them really. Places like Box Elder don't have many real residents so it doesn't take many drop in voters to completely upset the local political scene. You can always use Escapees in Texas as an alternate. The trouble with that option though is that Polk county has a very high DWI rate so your insurance would be high.
