What’s been interesting to watch is all the ‘dedicated nomads’ that have now gone to ground. Can’t blame them, especially now.

TX has vehicle inspection but you can get there year round most of the time. Get sick need multiple Dr visit you want a state out of the tundra. A lot of flights stop in TX as you go cross the USA.

There are a lot of changes going on in South Dakota, and I wonder if that will make establishing domicile in SD more problematic. I'm domiciled in SD.

I do always wonder how long it will last or if something will change eventually. Here's hoping SD stays flexible.

My insurance agent told me my payment would double or triple if I chose to reside in Nevada rather than Indiana. Crazy high rates there.

Perhaps domicile in Washington DC. They pay Zero. _Just joking_

Mine increased quite a bit for the same vehicle and company. I ended up reducing coverage quite a bit and still paying more. Moving back to WY I was able to add the travel trailer with full coverage and full-timers coverage, and it still costs less than just the van in Nevada. Insurance costs are not the only concern, of course, but I figure it’s one of those things people would like to know in advance to make an informed decision.

@@RobertWitham That's crazy. I think I'll look more into "residing" in Arizona. It takes longer to establish residency but I think maybe getting an LTVA pass would work, since they're for 6-7 months. Do you have any information or preference on that state for nomads? Or New Mexico?

What do you use for car insurance?

I have been using Geico for several years now at least. Basically just because of the easy self-management features through the website or app. That being said, if you insure an RV through Geico you apparently have to call and talk to someone - which sort of eliminates the advantage of online self-service.

Nevada DMV recently went to appointments only for all services except in their "rural" offices, i.e. Pahrump. So far everyone has been friendly and helpful but like everyone else they are struggling with staffing issues. Driver's license ID requirements are pretty rigorous. It appears the reason is that they are only giving out Real ID licenses. This requires a real physical address that is not the address of a mail forwarding service, so I'm not sure how they are going to send your renewal notice. Sign up to do everything electronically, I guess. Producing a current passport cuts through all the red tape though. I was surprised to find that registering a vehicle from out of state, even an older one, does not require a smog check though their written instructions seem to say the opposite. Regarding insurance, they are adamant that you must not spend one minute uninsured or you will be fined! Insurance is about 40% higher cost than California, but on the plus side travel trailers are not required to be insured. And Pahrump is ideally located for nomads.

I definitely agree about the location being convenient. Thanks for the update with your experiences. It was a few years ago (before the pandemic) when I moved my domicile there for a while. It was the staffing issues and lines around buildings that motivated me to move back out of Nevada as I had purchased a van that I needed to register. Maybe the appointment approach will at least help with the crowding and wait times.
