Establishing Whitetail Habitat That Provides Food and Cover - The Management Advantage

Whitetail need food, cover, and water. The past couple episodes have shown how we establish Switchgrass for whitetail cover. While warm season grasses are great for providing cover, they do not provide food. In this episode we take a look at ways to provide both food and cover for deer and other wildlife. The are many ways to provide this type of habitat. It can simply be planted via CRP mix or you can manipulate the existing habitat to take advantage of the existing seed bank. Regardless of how you establish it, with the proper management, it will provide whitetail with more of an incentive to call your farm home.

Love all the videos I learn a lot from y’all’s videos I just have a small farm in Missouri about 125 acres and have done a lot but just last year started planting warm season grasses mainly switchgrass and let me say last year was a head scratcher with that planting I’m use to tilling a field fertilize and plant and boom good food plot but I absolutely had to be patient with this one bc I frost seeded and thought by may 1st I would have baby switch and looking back I may have just really didn’t know what I was looking for so I just kept mowing it and ended up with a decent first year stand of switch however this year I’m planting a 10 acre spot around a wooded ravine and I went ahead and did a complete kill on the grasses there in the late summer early fall and am going to burn it Monday and then drill it and come spring green up like early April I am going to hit it with gly and semazine I really just enjoy the process

Did you see a ton of turkeys right after the burn? I've heard they'll come to burned areas to eat.

I am completely new to doing food plots and have no idea where to even begin. What would you suggest for a first timer wanting to do a 1 acre food plot on a 37 acre piece of property consisting of almost all hardwoods. Meigs county in SE Tennessee.

I would start with a soil test. Then depending if the area is in the woods or an open field, I would start with some kind of clover mix. I would maybe overseed with winter rye the first year. There are other options, but thats one possibility.
