So sad that trees that take decades to grow get chopped up like toothpicks. So cheap.

If he is paying you $1.50 he’s probably getting around $4-5 a board foot , but he is also got the overhead of getting it ready and to the mill

Most costs are processing. What are yard wide white pines worth? I’ve got lots of them. Selling the land so might as well make a bit more from the trees.

I cut a barn beam that has over 300 rings, over 300 years old. After it was shortened splitting began. Wish I knew then about S rings. However it was just for a fireplace mantle

Watch out for the Amish timber buyers, they will scam you to get 20% more lumber than the original contract was set up to buy. Plus they will give you a really half-assed price. The Amish timber buyers are really cleaning up and stealing beautiful Ohio trees at an alarming rate. Veneer logs are hard to come by now and the price is down. Contact your county extension forestry agent to have them survey (for free) and quote you a board foot estimate of what you have to sell in your tree lot. The Amish are not true Christians so many will lie and cheat you if they can. You must get an independent estimate of the board feet that the Amish has under contract to buy, before they are cut on your property. The Amish will buy the veneer log at half price and then take the rest of the tree for free. Sell each log separately and not by the tree. Also the Amish will lie and tell you that this tree or that tree is damaged simply because the ground squirrels have dug under the tree, this is also not true. If you can't see trunk damage then the tree is normally still perfectly good. And make sure that you include in the contract how much damage they will pay for when they rip through your wood lot with a machine. The Amish will try to extract as many trees at one time (without cutting them to size) as the machine can pull, which means that they will skin up many trees on their way out of your woods. The English will try the same tricks, probably okay. Also the Amish have a brother system where they will send several other timber buyers to your property to give you a cheaper price and when the 3rd Amish buyer shows up and he gives you a better deal, you think he is honest, but its a set up from the beginning. Ask me how I know this ?? I found out after the fact !!! Everyone loves to tell you about your stupid mistakes after you are signed, sealed and done.

So he said $1.50 per "foot" for 500 ft on a big white oak? I think a landowner could get a lot more selling the tree as firewood.

I live in a residential neighborhood in Baltimore County, MD. We have lost hundreds of 100+ yro White Oaks in the past ten years. As far as I know the wood has only been used as firewood. Seems like such a shame it could not have been used for building things out of.

Trees often have negative worth.. you can have 6 trees with easy access and nobody will even take them for free due to Fuel and labor costs..so they get cut and bulldozed into a big pile since worthless..

What most every one does not know the southeast is cutting hard wood trees out every day. But they don't replant hard wood trees. Hard wood trees are more Valuable, then cash money. A lot of wildlife species are dined out, because of this fact. O I know because I used to Drive a log truck. 😮😮😮😮

Between $1.25 and $1.50 for the whole tree? Its like several thousands of dollars worth of rough sawn lumber, not even including veneer. Is this actually right?
@3dprintedhardware
@3dprintedhardware 8 күн бұрын
When he said $1 to $1.50 I think he meant per estimated board foot, which he mentioned earlier that there was about 500 to 600 board feet in that tree. So the landowner would have gotten between $500 and $900 for that one tree. Then the logging company probably sells it to the saw mill for $2,500 and the saw mill cuts it up and probably sells it for $5000 to $6000. After that retailers probably get $8,000 to $9,000 for all the different products that came from that one tree.

It’s too bad that the moment it goes into the marketplace it becomes disposable. I was at the landfill last week and there was a man throwing away a pickup load of beautiful oak trim from a remodel project.

Man I have salvaged some lumber from rehab projects. It is incredibly time consuming and difficult to do. Typically there are square nails and stains around the nail holes. Just hard to make it worthwhile.

Wow. A buck 25/board foot to the tree owner- current market price where I work as a bench carpenter $6-10 range/board foot for clear white oak… seems the tree owner ought to get a bigger share of that. Takes a looonnnngggg time to grow trees, and a very short time to cut them up into lumber.

When the Japanese and Germans buy logs the almost exclusively buy veneer logs. Some buyers will have a veneer mill and a sawmill setup on the ship. By the time they get to their respective countries they’ve processed all the logs. I had a tractor and log trailer with a knuckle boom loader back in the 80’s. One time the German buyer hired me to sit on my loader and unload trucks and load the logs into gondola cars on the trail. I had 36 cars loaded with white oak headed for the port of Baltimore to be loaded onto ships. It’s a rough business to make any money.
