History of the Estarreja Carnival
The earliest mentions of Carnival in Estarreja date back to the early 20th century. In 1903, the local press recorded the celebration of parades with the famous "Battle of Flowers," a tradition deeply rooted in the community. During these years, social criticism was timidly expressed on the streets, contrasting with the elegant dances that gathered the high society of the town.
Although the Church condemned these pagan rituals, the community continued to celebrate Carnival thanks to the generosity of several benefactors who invested small fortunes to keep this tradition alive. However, by the late 1920s, the "Battle of Flowers" began to decline, marking a period of reduced carnival activity in Estarreja.
The revival of Carnival came in 1968 thanks to the initiative of a group of enthusiasts known as the "Friends of Carnival," including Manuel Marques Figueira, João Costa, Vítor Marques, and Vítor Oliveira. Their effort and dedication managed to revitalize the celebrations, laying the foundations for the modern Carnival.
