I bought a VW Golf 7.5 estate last year and I am super happy with it. I have all the space I need for my two large dogs in the back, suspension is nice with smaller wheels and Android Auto works flawlessly. The 1.5 TSI pulls nicely when needed as the Golf is much lighter than the Passat, Superb, Arteon or any SUV with the same engine and it does 50 mpg on the motorway, high 30s to 40s in town. Insurance is also cheap and maintenance/parts you can get anywhere for a Golf. Also looks smart.

EX motoring hack here, now in the private hire business. So I do know a bit about cars and having looked at all these with a view to acquiring a large executive class estate to do inter city and airport runs. We already have three Skoda Superb estates, and there's a very good reason they are so popular with taxi/PH drivers. However the absolute revelation is the car for people 'who are not into cars'. I bought a Volvo V90 D4 Momentum with a number of extra packs with the 'blond' interior. It had £30K on it and got it for £22K in early 2023. It's done just over 80K with us, with no problems. It'll do 48-50mpg on motorway, 38mpg urban in eco mode, in dynamic mode it goes like the clappers. The interior is terrific and gets at least 3-4 comments a week from passengers and request bookings over the Skodas. Loads of kit, including full pilot assist, and was cheaper to buy than the nearest equivalent Skoda - although in reality there is no equivalent Skoda. Prior to the Volvo (my first) I ran an E-class. Nice as it was, the V90 knocks it into a cocked hat.

For me the sweet spot is a 2016 E class estate. The new model with the new engines came out in 2016 and so there is a 6 month sweet spot where you get £35 road tax before the 2017 change in rates. The 2.0 diesel is amazingly responsive and pulls better than the old 2.7 lump. Inside - go for the 11 inch screen and it should not date so much. I just got the 2016 brochure and specced one as if I was buying it new and then waited for one to come along that fitted. Metallic red, cream leather and black wood dash. Had it 2 years and they seem to be about the same price I paid for it! It eats up long trips but still takes three big bags of hedge cuttings to the tip! Really cheap to run and maintain but looks and feels like an expensive car.

That era E-class (W212) suffered from rusting rear subframe - make sure you check that if thinking about buying one. I was quoted c£k4 to replace mine, then MB dealer replaced free of charge under direction from MB HQ. It had a full MB SH, which may have helped. I also had the brake lines done at the same time as they basically charged parts only and mine were close to going. High mileage diesels may also suffer from 'black death' which will sound like a chuffing noise coming from the injector area - if you catch this early then replacing injector and/or seals will fix it. Check the engine gets up to temp, otherwise it's a new thermostat. No way you're getting 45mpg+ ;)

Skoda Superb all day long 😊Just choose your engine and your spec. If you need to get two large canines in the back, ideal.

If I had a option of a estate or saloon I would pick an estate 95% of the time soo much more practical

I’ve had minivans, SUVs and station wagons and can say that the estate is the absolute best in my opinion.

F11 520d had timing chain issues on the N47D20 engine, up to 2014. Buying one after that time gets the B47D20 engine which doesn't have the problem with excesssive chain wear. Most N47s post 2011 should have had a fix, as well. But still better a B47, as it's also Euro 6 compliant.

Best all-rounder I had was the seat Leon 2.0 this 184fr. It was my van and a car for the kids and wife 60mpg and stage 1 remap had 210bhp. Quick and cheap to run.

Always the best on KZbin - what car people say/think to ourselves all the time - eg the Skoda Superb is just too sensible even though by all standards, it’s an excellent cars!

"Alright guys, how's it going, welcome backkk!" There are some class leaders in that lot. Thank you so much for the suggestions, my brother's watching this video as I type, as he's looking for a fast, roomy estate car.

I have run a e61 520d for 15 of its 18 years. Yes it’s long in the tooth, but it’s done 191000miles, it’s worn out 1 clutch, quite a few tyres, pads , 2 sets of discs and both front coil springs and the rear airbags but that’s just honest wear and tear. I wish I had bought the 530d or,535d but I got a good deal! My friends’ Mercs and Audis of the same vintage gave up long ago!

At high end I'd also suggest Volvo V60 T8 or T6 as alternative to the obvious German suggestions... quick enough with AWD and true hybrid range.

Some of those cars are cheap simply because they’re not ULEZ compliant. May not affect everyone at the moment but, sadly, affects us Londoners.
@markbennett41005 ай бұрын
Yes, if you are in London a non ULEZ vehicle doesnt work. I only drive in the ULEZ though about once a month, so spend say £300 a year on ULEZ charges for my 2013 diesel Landy. The fall in price of diesels has significantly outweighed that, so perversely, for me, the introduction of ULEZ encourages me to buy a non compliant diesel.
@robi43874 ай бұрын
Indeed, at £12.50 a day the school run would cost me £2,375 per year in a non-compliant vehicle.

Couldn’t agree more, the estate car in the UK, is so underrated and undervalued imo.

Currently in an 04 Passat Estate with absolutely nothing wrong with it, 155K on the clock.... "Pulls like a train in every gear". However, still find myself on Autotrader - toying with the following estates: 2018(ish) Octavia VRS / Seat Leon Cupra 300 / VW R 2017 onwards / 330 or 335d / etc... The only reason for upgrade really is that I want an auto again! Enjoy the vids mate, cheers.

How is it for diesel, I'm looking at them at the moment

Hi there. I am getting about 55mpg. Which is mainly around town, with odd run out of around 50 miles. Try to find one with all the toys( heated seats, steering wheel etc and later sync 3 system). I have all seasons tyres fitted. May effect mpg a bit, but amazingly good in recent heavy snow fall.

When I was looking around for a new car I really was interested in the Fabia Estate. Sadly the closest dealer was 3 hours away as my local one changed to selling only VW. A neighbour has one and it's the perfect size for touring and running around town with that 3 banger. I ended up settling for a Kia Cerato hatch. Same size as the Fabia with a couple more bells and whistles but had to pay pay a little more. The Cerato is OK on fuel but is only a Euro 5 which is pretty bad for a 4 year old car. I've no complaints though and had no issues over the past 4 years of ownership.

You must have blinked. We had a V70 which was a superb motorway cruiser. Bit cumbersome around town though.

New subscriber here. Thanks for this video, it is timed to perfection given I am currently contemplating a change in vehicle and wanted to cruise toward retirement in a luxury estate. Unfortunately I only have 10k maybe 1 or 2k more to spend so this section of your video was very helpful. My only other issue may be that my commute to work is only a grand total of 50 mins per day (38 miles) on a B roads and part and outer edge of a city. I am now torn between the Mercedes CLS, Jaguar Sportbrake 3.0, Audi A6 Avant and BMW 5 series touring, food for thought. Keep up the great work, I find your videos informative and humorous 👍👍

I'm basically stuck with my Peugeot 308 SW as can't find any car that have similar value to cost ratio. It's cheap to buy, cheap to service, great on fuel, loads of space and very comfortable. Yes, you have to wait for the screen to turn on over a minute sometimes and I had to castrate adBlue system at 100k but otherwise the car is unbreakable and faultless. 140k now and basically worthless so no point to getting rid of it as long as it drives. Apart from adBlue fault which I "fixed" cheaply ( no problem with MOTs ) I didn't have any problems. All of the suspension components are still in good condition and I live in Lincolnshire - we're not driving on the left but on what's left in here!

Hi Matt Estate cars are very practical. Over the years we started with a 2L Cortina estate,Peugeot 504 nicknamed the hearse but it was very practical for our retail business. Moved onto hatchbacks and Sporty SUV's but now the latest is a BMW 220i Lux Gran Tourer, very useful as it is easy access to get in and out and has a lower tailgate area that the SUV's we had owned. With 179bhp it is pretty quick! Regards Crawford

I've just picked up a 2014 Mazda 6 sport nav 2.0 petrol estate and the thing is absolutely sublime, much nicer than my mum's equivalent CX-5
I would jump on that green Skoda in a heartbeat if I was in Europe. I truly appreciate the Skoda as they are good at about evening. Not great but darned good.

I love an estate (and SUV's too), personally , even before I had kids, they're so versatile. Trouble is, my mates always wanted a hand moving stuff with them. 😒I've had a 3 series touring, insignia estate, A4 estate and I bought a 2019 BMW 5 series touring last September. The Insignia was rubbish but the 3 series and A4 were great. I love the 5 series though, even though it's only slightly bigger, the extra leg room and boot space makes all the difference with the kids getting bigger.

Another vote for the C5, partly based on the fact you can get one with Hydractive 3+ as well as the 3L V6 diesel (or perhaps one of the 2L HDIs), but also because it's a left-field choice with character. Wafty, smooth character.

I was looking for an estate as a run about for a while but couldn’t believe some of the prices. Managed to buy a 2011 320d touring off a friend for £1500. £35 a year tax, timing chains been replaced, comfortable and good to drive. If it lasts 18 months I’ll be happy.
