I’ve been looking to replace my 2010 Volvo XC70 for about 3 years. Every time I seriously consider something newer I just can’t imagine getting rid of it. It’s the 2.4 D and is an absolute tank. Driving around the Peak District it’s just in it’s element. As long as it’s financially viable, I think I’ll just keep it.

You inspired me Matt to have a go and recently bought a Lexus is300 sportcross as a practical family car, for a very reasonable price, far less than 10k, very well cared for by the previous owner who loved it, superb car, not as big inside as the more hearsy shaped cars but it's hard to find much to complain about with it so far. Cool, practical and quite quick. Thanks for an enjoyable youtube channel I often have them on when I'm working, it's fun listening to a fellow car nerd nerd out:)

I'm so in love with the XF, especially the modern one. And I have YET to see ANY of any year in person. The early sedan I see sometimes, looks nice enough, but I want the estate. Here in The Netherlands it's a rare look, and that's a big plus to me vs all the Mercs, BMWs, Volvos filling the estate lots. I worry about maintenance a bit. Especially as I intend to take it on epic (and I mean: North Cape, Moscow, Greece, Portugal) road trips.

Great timing on a video that has kind of confirmed my choice! My uber-high mileage E39 (270k-ish) has terminal rear chassis rail corrosion above the subframe. As I don't have the time to strip it all down to repair, I've just plonked a deposit on a Euro 6 F11 520d SE. I did contemplate that white one with the chavvy plates, wheels and wind deflectors and these also put me off! Thanks for the great vids!

I've always had the impression that it's always a choice of thirds - either the Mondeo/Passat/Insignia or the 3series/C-klasse/a4 with the most major difference being the brand category and subsequent expenses for maintenance. Have driven a 2017 mondeo for work and found it really nice tho, wouldn't overlook it in this budget.

I'm gutted. You did a great review of the Peugeot 508 RXH estate a while back. I bought one after watching your video. I'm typing this from just outside Alicante as we drove down via the tunnel last week. Fantastic run, smooth and quiet. Filled up on the Welsh border, got to Bordeaux, filled up again and got to Alicante with 90 miles left in the tank. 1400 miles on two tanks. Cavernous storage, more toys than Hamleys, and the gearbox is fine once you get used to it. They are hard to find, but under 10k will get you a good one.

Having only owned estates for the past 20 ish years I've owned 2 of those you discounted. I had a 2.4 Alfa 159 and it was great. and despite selling it on in 2017 if I had a lotto win I'd want to find that car and have it completely restored. Yes I had to get the DMF/Clutch done but other than a broken spring ,so I splashed out on a Bilstein/Eibach set up, it was reliable and never left me stranded over 6 years. My present is a Mondeo Mk4. A 2.2 and if I'd not had the Alfa this would have been the best car I have ever owned. Alfas hit a certain way but this Ford is great. I think it is a bit colour/spec sensitive and in the TXS spec I think it looks great. And yeah I've always thought that the steering wheel looks a tad big but I'm not sure if that's just the design that does that.

Great video. I’ve been looking for a sub £10k estate!! XF or a V60r design look like great options. Bit quick to rule out a mondeo! A top spec mk4.5 like a titanium x sport would be one of the best cars to drive in this price bracket, and the boot is enormous.

Always enjoy your videos Matt, and this was no exception. Although, why did you skip Peugeot and Renault? The new Megane estate is a very good car and the Peugeot 308 from 2015 on is also a fine estate. I should know, as I own one ;) I'd always turned my nose up at French cars, but my 2015 308 estate with the PSA 2.0 diesel and torque convertor auto has been faultless :)

I would have included the (admittedly rare) Honda Accord Tourer here. There is the option of the 2.2 CTDi diesel - which most had - but personally I would have the 2.4 I-VTEC (K24) petrol. They are very well built, and the petrol engines are bombproof if maintained. Handsome looks too IMO. If I was buying an estate I would have one.

Which I have owned now for 10 years, hasn’t missed a beat and doesn’t use any oil or water. Has done 194,000 miles and still drives like it’s done 60,000 miles. Volvo all the way for me Matt! I purchased a 09 Mondeo Titanium X Sport Estate for around £4k last year, the Sport being fairly less bland than a normal mondeo, sporty body kits, twin exit exhaust, red stitching, half leather half alcantara seats and all that jazz. And a humongous boot. 2.2 Diesel which although its PSA, its been good to me. But its an amazing spec, much better than any audi and BMW in that price range maybe even in the £10k price range from this video. Touchscreen unit with bluetooth audio and sat nav, Fully electric front seats, drivers seat has position memory for up to 5 settings, Heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, adaptive cruise control, hill hold assist, the list goes on! And especially the heated front windscreen is a blessing.

It has some creature comforts like a backup camera, navigation, sunroof, leather seats, heated seats, and a great Harmon/Kardon speaker. All in all, it has never left me stranded despite the harsh winters we get in the northeast US. A reliable and practical car that does everything I could ask of it. It has 112,000 miles, it just ticked over to 112,005 miles actually, and it is very good. Everything works, and I like that it is not an SUV or a sedan. I would buy another one in a heartbeat

Great video, I enjoy watching your flicks. Since you mention a couple of times that one should always do the necessary maintenance and service works, let me say, I totally concur with you, maintenance is the be-all and end-all of cars, one should not be careless and stingy in this regard. And be prepared to have extra maintenance done beyond what's listed by the manufacturer. Example: I own an Audi SQ7 from 2016 (took it over from my father, the battleship had become too big and unwieldy for him, despite having all the litte gadgets like cameras, parking sensors, automatic parking etc.), which is now approaching 100,000km. According to Audi, the transmission (ZF 8HP90 eight-speed converter) requires no maintenance (change of transmission fluid and a transmission flush) "for the lifetime of the vehicle". If you ask ZF themselves, they recommend that you flush the transmission and change the fluid every 100,000 km (approx. 62,000 miles), because this increases the service life of the transmission. Doing that set me back around 1,000€, but I felt and still feel this was money well spent, because I have the cautionary example of a friend at the back of my memory: He drove his BMW X3/F25 (which also comes with a variant of the ZF 8HP gearbox) for 230,000 km without taking afore-mentioned measures, and then the gearbox was gone. Otherwise the car was still in very good shape, but replacing the gearbox in the end did cost him more than doing the recommended service every 100,000 km.

The 2.5d is a bit nicer to drive (in normal traffic) than the 2.2d imho, although I found both cars had a bit of an odd ratio gearing for 1st to 2nd. And, with one of those oil burning lumps up front, it's quite a heavy car. And, although I don't know much about the newest GM influenced engines, even if they are still GM based, yes there is nothing really wrong with an Alfa. The older Fiat diesels and Twinspark engines were my forte. Two rules for these engines: check the oil everytime you refuel and (as the great car collector Jay Leno says) let the engine warm up before you nail it!

I bought a 2009 Mercedes C180k petrol estate in Feb for £5500. Really love it as a car, is really smooth, practical (for a young family) and has been reliable and after a little tidying up feels like a much newer car. But have this nagging feeling that I should’ve gone for a 3 series or a Volvo (I think I would’ve gone for a Octavia/Superb if the newer shapes had’ve been in budget at the time).

Had quite a few of your top picks! 😂 59 plate V70 D5 R auto, F11 520d M-Sport auto, and now my C7 A6 Allroad Bitdi. 👌 The V70 had the most space and nice 5 cylinder noise. Gearbox was ponderous and no sport mode. The F11 looked good, but basic stereo was rubbish, 4 cylinder diesel was wrong in such a big car (should have gotten a 530d as I loved my e39 530d sport touring) also I just never found the sport seats comfortable on 3+ hour drives. The Bitdi allroad has been the best. The ride quality is immense, the bose stereo is good, sports seats are comfy and the balance of mpg Vs power/pace of the Bitdi engine is spot on. Covered 380 miles on half a tank yesterday with some spirited driving too. 👌😎 The only other estate car I would say that stands out for that price is the older C6 avant but with the 3.0t engine. If you can find one. Reasonable mpg, solid 6spd zf and a supercharged v6 petrol from the s4 in a slightly lower state of tune. But can easily have the wick turned up on it, and then you have a genuinely quick and very understated estate car. With good spec and still has satnav/Bluetooth/ heated seats and xenons. 👍 End of run models all come in nice colours too.
