Nice haul Tom. I work at a Hardware store and those Metric bolts are expensive! That fluted punch is for making a hole in concrete or brick. I think it's called a star bit or drill. Those old Chilton books were really helpful before computers. Great video!

I did it with 3 Snap On ratchets I bought from a Garage Journal member. Two sounded dry, took the face plate off finding no teeth damage on the anvils.Greased them up and they work good now.Wiped the outside up with tub o' towels.Wrenches,I go after the Mac V groove wrenches which are getting hard to find.I have a complete Mac metric wrench set 10mm to 19mm in the original roll from 1977

Dedicate the end section of a kitchen cabinet to be a communal tool chest and workbench. If you think about it, it's perfect because you have high outlets, bright lighting, a sink, and probably a vent as well. Obviously you want a mat to put on the countertop itself, no sense in risking it unnecessarily. And I'd put toolbox rubber mats in the drawer and cabinet shelves too to keep everything in place and protect the nice wood.

I have that same GE Wiring Book in one of my Electrical Toolboxes for years (mine doesn't look quite that good anymore).......Throw the broken Stanley in some hot water and see if the grips will come off, you may be able to repurpose those too.......The vinyl pouch really cleaned up beautifully on the Moody Set.......Even if you never need those long hose clamps it still makes you feel prepared and that's worth something.......Might have to go with that little Tire Gauge for my favorite of that haul, I can feel the weight right thru the screen!

I discovered this trick about 15 years ago and I've used it ever since. Somebody turned me on to this synthetic two-stroke oil mix made by Sea-Doo called XPS. Comes in a 5 gallon jug for like 17 bucks, I'm pretty sure I'm still on the first bottle. Not lately, but I used to run a chainsaw 6 or 7 hours a day and any logger will tell you they rebuild their saws at least once a season. I've never rebuilt one. That's just testimonial. I haven't opened one up, but I have poked boroscopes down the spark plug holes and everything looks pristine. I even use it to clean stained cast iron for some reason it does well. I know there's a lot of argument about synthetic versus normal oil and I'm no mechanic. Full disclosure, I also run synthetic and my four strokes though I admit the differences are much more subtle. But that XPS for two strokes, I don't even clean carbs in between seasons. I have at least 10 pieces of equipment that are two stroke, any one of them will fire up after setting a year. But the biggest thing is power. It's like an immediate 20% gain without altering the mix at all

That Stanley book with the images of how to identify the parts of each tool, that might look really cool if you cut it up and framed them around the shop. I've got old pinups from the 40s everywhere but I've often thought of switching to blueprints or something like what you have

Violence is never the best way to solve a problem. This is especially true of those that we love and spend our lives with. That said, a day's handprint might be worthy reminder not to touch a man's tools, haha. I tried for 20 years to banish my life from my shop, never worked. On the other hand, I replaced the heat pump and the new thermostat was quite a bit more complicated. Having already lived together for a decade, I lied and said the thermostat required a password. That was probably the most comfortable 18 months of my marriage! It was fantastic. Completely reasonable and predictable power bills. No repetitive conversations about how turning the furnace up to 90 will not make it hotter faster, only cause it to run longer. It was glorious. If nothing else, I have shared this secret with mankind, I am fulfilled. Always establish low expectations up front, you're going to be expected to perform yourself each year. Leave yourself room.

Do you happen to know if the tabs on the sides of an old style paint can opener are significant? I realize it is also a bottle opener and can be used as a carrier so the wire bales don't hurt your hand. But the tabs look like they should be useful. Haven't figured out what for yet. Thank you.

Hi Tom, how do you get inside the see trough plastic on the old pouches? I'm really struggling with that. Oh and the books are fantastic. We think everything is on the internet, but you'll have a really hard time finding that information you need (and understandable too) those books are more valuable than we think and I think that value will grow rather then decline (with all the online censorship going on).

That Kraeuter piece isn't a punch. It's a Masonry Star drill bit. They're struck with anything from a 16 oz. ballpeen up to a 64 oz. or so, while rotating the bit between hits, to drill through Masonry. When men were men!

It looks like, if you're just starting out accumulating tools, you're doing OK, but could do better. But if you're just buying tools to resell (or flip), which is something else entirely, you're on the right track. If you're putting tools together to make actual sets or collections, there are better ways to go about it.
