When Esteban tells the story of his accident, I like to imagine his story as an alternate take on the story of Antonia Banderas's character of El Mariachi in Desperado. A tragic incident robbed him of his musical gift, and he had to work his way back. El did it by using his injured hand to wield a gun and kill bad guys, Esteban waited until he could play again and made a guitar teaching package to sell on infomercials.

Stephen 'Esteban' Paul like pseudo virtuoso Liberace found a way to exploit his average musicianship and managed to find his perfect audience that actually appreciates his artistry. Not all telesales Esteban guitars (according the reactions below) sounded crap and given that most of them were sold in a package that contained video tutorials, $100 doesn't sound like a terrible rip-off. I came across and watched "Esteban's Complete Guitar Course for Beginners" and it is actually pretty good even a tad bit ambitious. His Jack Nicholson 'lite' manner of presentation in these tutorial videos is surprisingly agreeable to watch. In one of the reactions below somebody posted a link to an article in the Phoenix New Times, the journalist who wrote that newspaper article tried to uncover the truth about 'Esteban', but Esteban believing so firmly in his own personal mythology kind of makes that a truth in itself, one that his audience and fans were willing to accept and embrace. Just my two cents vs the band wagon of easy ridicule...

The Billboard chart that most think of is the Hot 100. According to Bilboard, Esteban's album "Heart of Gold" peaked at 53. His other albums were at 54, 159, 179 and 192. You could easily find a better newer guitar these days...but I saw an old guy who had been playing probably 50 years and he made it sound pretty good, the action (that's the space between the strings and the fingerboard if you didn't know) was really high, and would be hard to play chords past the major chords positions, with a setup and quality strings it probably could be a decent guitar, but I'd seek out a decent cheap Epiphone or Washburn first...I've personally never encountered an Esteban, but based on the information I'd say avoid if you don't know how to set it up or have a good local music store you could take it to for a setup.

He can play "Malaguena." All night long. If that bothers you, maybe you just don't like one-eyed blind, poney-tailed, leather hat, wayfarer-wearing, Jack Nicholson-looking guys with long fingernails.

youtube won't let me post the link directly, but if you piece this together... there's some interesting reading here: phoenixnewtimes (dot) com (forward slash) 2000-09-21 (forward slash) news (forward slash) the-tao-of-esteban it's the segovia bullshit that pisses me off the most.

I hope no-one's comparing Esteban to Tommy Emmanuel? Tommy may joke around & keep it hokey & simple in some ways, but he is a most incredible guitar virtuoso by any professional standards.
