pretty good. the 4017 and 555 are two of my favorites. they are cheap to buy in bulk and there are lots of applications, provided someone has a little imagination.

Nice project ,I wonder how many LEDs you could connect with Charlieplexing and the same ICs.

Charlieplexing requires fewer outputs for same number of LEDs connected in anti-parallel BUT instead of just high and low signals, high-impendance is the key to make this work. The 4017 has 10 outputs so theorically you can connect up to 90 LEDs, but without the presence of high-impendance, it may or may not work in the way you want. Additionally, it is not recommended to mix colors when using charlieplexing, because of the voltage drop of LED, e.g. it is a bad idea to mix red and blue LEDs.
