Esther Ghey Calls on the Government to Protect Students from Smartphones

The mother of the murdered teenager, Brianna Ghey, is calling on the new government to protect students from the dangers of smartphones.
Brianna Ghey's headteacher Emma has set up a campaign, supported by Brianna's mother Esther, to educate parents on how to keep kids away from social media and monitor their behaviour online.

Yes, it's a different world to when we were kids, and they change what apps they use every few years, not so many using Facebook now, they move on to other ones and secret accounts, they are always two steps ahead of parents so its hard to supervise

My one had a cr*ppy Nokia with no internet at that age. She was NOT happy as all her pals had it. She got one at 13 but I told her as I am paying for it and it’s in my name I have to know ALL the passwords and I have to have access to everything she has on it any time I choose. As in if I randomly pick up the phone and want to see what kinds of pictures/messages she is sending or receiving I will see them! She could only have the apps I allowed her to have - if I saw an app that should not be there it was removed. I had to have all the parent controls on it. I even went down to the Apple Store and the EE shop to get educated on all the controls I could have over her phone. Also she only had x number of hours on the phone after school and had to do homework before even picking up the phone. If she behaved she could have x hours at the weekend. If she did not behave herself her phone access was severely restricted.

My nephew just turned 12 and his parents don't allow him to have a smartphone. He unfortunately gets bullied at school because of that, and the school don't even do anything about it.

Totally valid points about the harm of social media on children, but am I missing something? Wasn't Brianna the teen who was killed by those two weird kids who were obsessed with serial killers? How is it a social media issue?

It's about time someone stood up and told the nation it is up to parents to deal with this. When I was a child (70-80's) my parents told me once and if you ever deviated, you did not sit down for a week!!!!

I'm not familiar with British culture, so please be kind in your response. Has there ever been a ban by the U.K. government that has actually been diligently followed by teenagers? Smoking cigarettes? Marijuana? Don't date young men/women who are 16 years old or older? Don't get a fake I.D.?

No. However there has been a time when parents were much stricter in disciplining their children and if something was against the law they did not allow illegal behaviour to go on under their roof or were not given money to indulge in illegal behaviour outside the home.

It's difficult to measure 'diligent behaviour' because we're a nation of 60m+. I'd say the recent ban on under 18s buying lottery has worked, which was previously under 16s

Kids under 16 should just have old phones and not a smart phone no social media and just access to calling because the priminster saying we won't ban social media for under 16 he's breaking the law right there because kids shouldn't have social media anyway it says you have to be over 16 when signing up 😂

We need to get back to the traditional legal stance that a child is a child until they are 21, the traditional legal age of majority, to which everything must be immediately returned - no child under 21 should have any access at all to any social media platforms, to any internet enabled device, even if supervised, including smartphones - and no child under 21 should be permitted at all to possess any mobile phone or other mobile device - the police must be given the specific legal power to seize such devices if found in the possession of any children under the age of 21 - the inherent dangers for children under 21 are by now well documented, are too great in number and in seriousness that no risk can afford to be taken, regardless of the education given - the U.K. online safety act does not even require U.K. ISP’s to block and deny access to potentially harmful online content regardless of appropriate age restrictions and we should be looking to countries like China and North Korea to see how this can be achieved
