According to the Education Secretary, parents working from home are to blame for the staggering 20% rise in pupils skipping school on Fridays. At the same time, rates of poor mental health among young people have risen to 1 in 6. So, should students be entitled to ‘work from home’ days too? Kaye thinks kids thrive on routine and should not be working from home, whereas Judi believes there’s a lot of pressure on young people and a WFH day could be beneficial for their mental wellbeing. Linda remembers putting a hot water bottle on her head to get out of school, meanwhile, Frankie’s personal experience with her son’s anxiety has her in two minds about the idea.

I loved Judi's answer. She's right, kids need breaks. They don't have to do what you want them to do every single day of the week.

There is a mental health issue here and really needs to be addressed in some cases

If you want kids to have a day off cos there won't be any working from home every week then that comes off school holidays which by the way they get plenty off to sort themselves out. The world's gone soft 🙄

It depends on each child, just as it depends on each adult who is allowed to do hybrid working. I work at the British Library and I have autism. I work from home three times a week and I go into the office twice a week. As long as the child is studying at home, then I’m fine with them working from home.

The ONLY way I got my youngest to school is because he was scared I would go to jail. Lol lol. He has always had anxiety. Really bad anxiety. He has been treated for it since probably age 8 and he is 21 now. We ended up doing it from home in the last two years because his anxiety was so bad.

We need to start listening to children who are really struggling and I don't mean little struggling I mean real anxiety which is number ten out a scale of one to ten some children need to be home schooled not all or smaller groups

IF a parent decides to do this they shouldn't be made to feel bad most children can fit in to the school environment but there is a small minority which cannot and they took need to be supported and given education and there needs met to

School is not for every child. Learning is not just done in a restricted classroom. Education is the responsibility of the parent. You won’t get arrested for not having your child attend school but is your responsibility to ensure your child is getting the education they deserve

Every child is different we cannot generalise it really depends on the circumstances

Or at least given the support they need to cope with the school environment it's not bad behaviour it's knowing when a child needs that extra support and understanding and not made to feel like they are misbehaving for not wanting to attend school

It is not the law that you have to go to school. It is the parents responsibility to arrange their child's education.

How are parents supposed to make money if school suddenly becomes work from home days?! Will non parents have to do More shifts so the parents can take care of their kids? Will parents be out of pocket with childcare costs?!

In general, giving children a regular day off working from home is not such a good decision imo as most parents are working and trying to get time off basically means resorting to their working a 4 day week which for the majority is just not feasible. I think the pandemic has been used as an excuse for too many things and children are all too often treated with kid gloves. It won’t make any difference to their well-being and will only serve to make school seem like some sort of punishment.

I can see a lot of older generations boomers very likely commenting how this would never have happened in their time and how 'soft' we are now. I'm sorry but school has changed drastically from your time... technology for example means if a child is bullied that continues when they leave the classroom from trolling etc if they use social media and are outcasted if they don't. They have access to so much and not good media.. constantly comparing their bodies to AI, filtered images and curated lives displayed on the internet.. their self-esteem and confidence is affected in a way that yours wasn't in your time... they may come from families that have had to come through financial hardships with recessions and covid and everything in-between. I was raised in the 80's and 90s and i feel for young people of today things were simpler back then they are much more complicated and difficult now.

I've got young Neices and Nephew's who are at school and they have so much homework and pressure to do well. I can understand mental health as I suffer myself. Its difficult for them but thats why they get the school holidays. If there struggling really bad then possible let them have the odd day here and there but not on a weekly basis.

I didn’t realize work from home means break. Work from home is still work. High school kids with a ton of homework could actually benefit but younger kids would need discipline to do it.

when I was in school I never missed a day off school not even to sickness. My parents would send me and my siblings to school even if we were under the weather and will say if you’re really sick the school will call us and we will pick you up. That was 15 years ago! How times have changed in 15 years is shocking!

This wouldn’t have even been a discussion 20 years ago, you just used to put up with it and shut up, we all have to do things we don’t like, it’s part of life. I don’t know what the future generations will be like…

The reason children are worse than ever is because they’re never at school these days. Far too many week long and 2 week holidays then 6-8 at summer. Calculate over 12 months how many they’re actually in school, it’s nearer 7 than 12 and that’s a sorry state of affairs. School should be 9-5pm. Simple. It’s education setting them up for contributing to LIFE and SOCIETY.

Don't you think that maybe life and society is wrong? I mean, some workplaces are looking to shorten work hours or extend them and cut one day off? Why? Because we're recognising that there needs to be more worklife balance. And the only people clinging to the old system are ones refusing to acknowledge it had problems in the first place.

You have the wrong view Frankie !! school is not for every child and to threaten ur child that u will go to jail is horrific you are making him see missing school as a crime !! He might be better homeschooled or at a different type of school ??
