Exit from EU will make huge difference to the quality and quantity of agricultural output in UK- eventually But we need to tackle the oppressive grip on farming held by supermarkets whose policies greatly reduce the nutritional value of most of what is sold in the interests of profitability. Also requiring attention are the values of factory farmers in producing crops only for processing as opposed to fresh consumption Oats is probably the best hope for the future, given the poor quality of much of UK soil these days. Sweetcorn another good bet. EU policies reduced our ability to distribute home grown product especially fruit locally and supermarkets have developed an unhealthy dependence on imported food. But reclaiming land currently dedicated to animal husbandry (now we’re out of EU) should go some way to mitigating the situation we find ourselves in:- cabbage, beetroot, carrots potato all grow well in sub-standard soil. Winter greens, beans, chickpeas, salad also can be produced. All that’s needed is will to succeed which looks to be in short supply from this debate - the speaker did not even address the basic issues involved in economics of land apportionment due to a personal inability to accept that the future has to be vegetarian and vegan whether we like it or not. The word “organic” never even crossed this reactionary woman’s lips, and the sparse attendance suggests the penny has not yet dropped as to how critical the current situation actually is
