My family ancestors, the Donaldsons moved from Coldstream in Northumbria to work in the mines though I believe one of the two brothers became a railwayman. They first settled in Lackenby then Normanby but I with my siblings grew up in Lazenby during the 60s and enjoyed exploring the woods and hills at our door step. You, by this video answered a lot of questions I've always had. Thank you. PS As a young boy I heard rumours that there used to be two Armoured Tanks sited on the side of the hills and we spent a lot of time looking for them. The ones you show are Crusader Tanks fitted with a 2 Pounder gun. Well used in North Africa. Its a shame I missed them by a few years. The SS Castle was always a spooky place, it felt that the birds stopped singing when it came in sight as we walked the old tramway.

A real delight to see and hear this man's memories. Perhaps we should all pay attention to what's around us and save what we can for future generations. I used to play in these areas in the late '70's and '80's. Might come back with the camera to capture what remains.

i love your videos charley! got me into exploring mines...I believe it is blocked and completely flooded. the water has risen by about 5 inchs in just over a year since my first visit here. I will be going back there with something to get further in than i did on my recent video. but from what i saw it turned slightly to the left and looked to have been back filled
