I'll explain a few of your questions: The papacy can retrospectively be traced back to St. Peter, who was the first bishop of Rome. However, the "popes" of those early days were just that: the bishops of Rome. The See of Rome didn't gain any prevalence in the whole church until the Empire was converted to Christianity, when the bishops of Constantinople, Rome, Antioch, Jerusalem, and Alexandria started to be seen as the most senior ones. Religion is a flaky thing. All over the world, and in Christianity, and even inside the Catholic Church, there are regionally different traditions. What matters is that we as faithful consider ourselves to be a part of the same community (I'm Catholic, by the way). So I wouldn't really call the struggle for dominance between the popes and the emperors as a schism in the church, as the emperors didn't really claim dominance over the church, but (1) the pope in particular and (2) their own realm. The kings of France, for example, also appointed their own bishops because they served in their administration, so the emperors just followed suit. The kings of France, however, weren't in a relation of circular legitimacy with the popes, so them appointing their own bishops rarely caused trouble with Rome.

The Catholic Church was one massive church. The head of the faith was still the Pope but politics in the middle ages tend to make things very complicated. The traditions in many countries may be different but ultimately we still worship the same God and adorate the same saints. There was always this myth that the church dictated everything in medieval culture, including war and politics. But in actuality, the church was only a universal faith accepted by many western kingdoms and not necessarily the decision maker in many issues. Christian Kingdoms still played dangerous political games whether you are a Catholic or not. The Pope just so happened to be caught up in this culture of political intrigue. The Muslim civilization had their own issues as well. The Indian Hindus had issues regarding politics as well. Even if we all relate with each other through our faith, doesn't mean we won't hate each other when each side insults each other. I'm pretty sure the Estonian tribes or counties had at one point warred against each other for power and wealth until larger powers invaded and united everyone against a common foe.

According to many websites there WAS a bucket involved. The bucket was an oak bucket that was filled with valuable loot taken from the Modenese. According to War History Online, In September 1325, when Mantuan troops captured the Bolognese fort at Monteveglio, located a mere 12 miles west of Bologna, the fort had been betrayed not by pro-Ghibellines, but by malcontents. Taking advantage of the chaos and confusion, some Modenese soldiers snuck into Bologna. There in the town’s center was the main well next to the San Felice gate. Beside it rested a bucket filled with Modenese loot. Unable to resist, the soldiers stole the bucket and its contents, then proudly displayed it beside Modena’s main well. Furious, Bologna demanded the return of the bucket and its loot. As far as they were concerned, they had stolen it fair and square. The Modenese refused, of course, so Bologna declared war. Everything that had taken place up to that point was mere child’s play. The Modenese had an initial victory it seems, but the war actaully coninued all the way to 1529 when Charles I of Spain invaded Italy, Apparently the story must be true since after the war, the oaken bucket was proudly displayed in Modena and kept in the Torre della Ghirlandina as a memorial of the city’s victory. The one today is just a replica, however. If you want to see the original, go to the Palazzo Communale. Doesn't seem made up to me.

The title of "Pope" comes from the Greeks and means "Father" it was a title used by early Christianity to refer to all Bishops and senior clergymen. It wasn't until the 11th century that it officially became the official and unique title of the Bishop of Rome. (I imagine this was as a result of the Schism that saw the birth of Catholicism)

17:10 Arthur, I dont think you understand power. The wars are never fought about what simple people want, but what the small group in power wants, which is usually: more power. Joining the whole Pope vs Emperor thing was just the pretense, a cause to rally the people behind. Most of the times, which side they chose to side with was about which one would give them the easiest way to accomplish their goals.

In early Christianity the pope was just the bishop of Rome, with no more power over all of Christendom than any other bishop. The power of the position grew over time. So yes there were popes to be persecuted but, it wasn't the same "all powerful" position as it would come to be later.

14:50 Interesting question. Its kind of like how various protestants and Catholics worship the same god but have differenting views on how to worship him and different interpretations on the bible. I grew up with a Presbyterian church and when I came to college I go to a Baptist church. While they are somewhat different, the main focus of God and Jesus is still there, and therefore could call it one religion, christianity.

Personally as a devout Christian who has read the Bible cover to cover, there really isn’t any Biblical reason/command to have a pope. Many times Catholicism has taken the Bible and basically thrown it out of the window. This is especially true when it comes to the issue of salvation. The Bible says that it is by faith that we are saved. You don’t have to do anything. But in Catholicism salvation is mainly about works. Matain Luthier realized this and helped push forward what the Bible actually says.

The Pope, or pontifex maximus, was originally an elected religious position within the roman religion/state. State and religion were tied together in rome, the senate was actually a temple as was the treasury. At some point a Christian was elected and it eventually became a christian tradition and position. That last part is hard to find history videos about, but the youtube channel Historia Civilis has great videos about roman political and religious organizations and those do cover the earliest workings of the pontifex maximus. One famous pontifex maximus was julius caesar, and it was part of being "pope" then to manually correct the calendar every year. Caesar famously developed the julian calendar with leap years every four years. 1000 or so years later a christian Pope, Gregory, refined that calendar into the gregorian calendar. A calendar that was pretty much fine for use for some time yet but high tech time measuring devices made it obsolete somewhat early in it's intended usage lifespan.

The pope then during Roman times was called the patriarch of Rome or simply the archbishop of Rome. The other bishops and patriarchs elect them as Pope, this still occurs in Orthodox Christianity with the patriarchs. The first essences of Roman or papal supremacy was when Pope Leo (patriarch of Rome and future saint) was on the patriarchs throne, the other patriarchs met in the council of Chalcedon and the Pope or bishop of Rome merely sent a representative saying “Rome has spoken, no council was needed” over time this caused more and more papal supremacy to sprout since there were no patriarchs in the western part of the empire to stop him. The final breaking point was 1054 when Orthodox and Catholic Churches split. But here is the list of the first patriarchs Apostle Mark the Evangelist-Alexandrias Apostle Peter-Antioch Apostle Andrew-Constantinople Apostle James the Just-Jerusalem Apostle Peter (Also Saint Paul)-Rome
